This is a downloadable programme that teaches programming through a virtual robotic rover. Design games and challenges with your robot moving and finding objects. The commands are similar to MS Logo, but the interface and graphics are vastly more child-friendly. It is free for personal use. This is a good downloadable programme which provides a good environment to teach children how to code. It feels very similar to MS Logo, but much more suited to children. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/ICT+%26+Web+Tools

This is a superb resource for making 3D storyboards and animations. The programme is a little complicated and is designed to be used by older children. It feels similar to Google SketchUp and it will have your class enthralled for hours with creative writing and animating fun. A large download, but worth it. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/Video%2C+animation%2C+film+%26+Webcams

More and more people are throwing away their USB memory sticks (but probably just losing them down the back of the sofa) in favour of cloud storage. This is a wonderful storage site, download and multi-platform app which is very similar to Dropbox. A synced folder sits on you devices and can be updated and accessed from any device. You can generating a url to share folders or files with other people. It works just fine on a computer with Dropbox already installed and the free account gives you 15GB of storage. That's enough storage where 'tidy' filing schools might begin to migrate their school network storage to the cloud for free - and that's exciting. Additional storage is available for a price. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/ICT+%26+Web+Tools

Social Media & Open Education - Microlectures - 10 views

  •
Short & energetic presentation styles such as Pecha Kucha and Ignite are becoming more popular in conferences & classrooms. A similar style of concise instruction has become common through websites such as Instructables and 5Min.com. Microlectures seems to satisfy the need for discrete units of knowledge coupled with decreasing attention spans.

BBC News - Is multi-tasking a myth? - 14 views

  • What that suggests, the researchers say, is that multi-task are more easily distracted by irrelevant information. The more we multi-task, the less we are able to focus properly on just one thing.
  • A raft of studies has found that, actually, multi-tasking is a good way to do several things badly.
  • We're not really multi-tasking. We're switching between tasks in an unfocused or clumsy way."
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Amazing, but as it turns out, quite logical. "The brain has very specialised modules for different tasks, like language processing and spatial recognition. It stands to reason that two similar tasks are much harder to do simultaneously, because they're using similar bits of tissue."
  • Driving and talking doesn't use the same bits of brain. Answering an e-mail while chatting on the phone does. In effect, we are creating information bottlenecks.

Teaching as transparent learning « Connectivism - 0 views

  • Putting ideas out for discussion contrasts with formal “reach a conclusion and publish” model.
  • but it seems to me that individuals who share similar cognitive architectures (novices with novices and experts with experts) have greater capacity to communicate.
  • But the value of dialogue and discourse in learning can’t be subjugated to the view that all contributions should advance a field. Transparency in expressing our understanding, our frustrations, and our insights helps others who are at a similar stage.
