Bush, Obama focus on standardized testing leads to 'opt-out' parent movement - The Wash... - 0 views

  • “Over the last couple of years, they’ve turned this one test into the all and everything,”
  • They argue that the exams cause stress for young children, narrow classroom curricula, and, in the worst scenarios, have led to cheating because of the stakes involved — teacher compensation and job security.
  • In some states, as much as half of a teacher’s job evaluation is now determined by student scores on standardized tests.

Congress has authorized a new federal research center that will be charged with helping to develop innovative ways to use digital technology at schools and in universities. The National Center for Research in Advanced Information and Digital Technologies was included as part of the latest reauthorization Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader of the Higher Education Act, approved last month. It will also help adapt techniques already widely used in other sectors, such as advertising and the military, to classroom instruction.

Duncan: Superintendents Need To Think Differently About Education Investments -- THE Jo... - 0 views

  • "Yes." Part of the cost for textbook publishers is trying to deal with at least 50 sets of standards, and that isn't efficient for anyone.
    • Josh Paluch

So, if they only have to produce to one national standard, the cost of textbooks should drop dramatically. Let's see..... I have my doubts.

  • Office of Educational Technology Still Up in the Air The topic of a new director for the Office of Educational Technology provided the least amount of discussion. Shelton refused comment on who that person might be, when a name might be released, or even where the position would be placed in the organization. Beginning with the first Director, Linda Roberts under Secretary Richard Riley in the Clinton administration and continuing through John Bailey, Susan Patrick, and Tim Magner under President Bush, this position has always reported directly to the secretary. Rumor in Washington is that the position will report to the assistant deputy secretary for innovation and improvement, Shelton, and not the secretary.

Building a Better Teacher - NYTimes.com - 20 views

  • There was no shortage of prescriptions at the time for how to cure the poor performance that plagued so many American schools. Proponents of No Child Left Behind saw standardized testing as a solution. President Bush also championed a billion-dollar program to encourage schools to adopt reading curriculums with an emphasis on phonics. Others argued for smaller classes or more parental involvement or more state financing.
  • This record encouraged a belief in some people that good teaching must be purely instinctive, a kind of magic performed by born superstars.
