  • But one area of American life that is consistently resistant to innovation is our education system.
  • children who are below grade level by age ten tend to stagnate and eventually give up and drop out in high school. Harvard educational psychologist Jeanne Chall famously called this phenomenon the "fourth grade reading slump,
  • In the classroom, digital media also have other major advantages. These media teach students to master the production of knowledge, not just the consumption of knowledge. Kids learn to create videos, write blogs, collaborate online; the also learn to play video games, do digital storytelling, fan fiction, music, graphic art, anime and even more. Their informal process of learning, collaboration, and transforming passion into knowledge is desperately needed in schools today.

  • Welcome to www.Classsroom20.com, the social networking site devoted to those interested in the practical application of computer technology (especially Web 2.0) in the classroom and in their own professional development. Especially we hope that those who feel they are "beginners" will find this a comfortable place to start being a part of the community dialog and to learn more.

Classroom20 social network over 1000 members and growing, forums, blogs - very active community - definitely worth joining. Not sure however that Ning is the best platform. Am thinking that something like ectolearning.com might be more suitable even though it isn't as "jazzy" as Ning.

  • Sketchup is remarkably user-friendly! Technology in the classroom is a great tool... it motivates students, stimulates learning, and often levels the playing field. Sketchup is a terrific example... there were gasps of delight and exclamations of enthusiasm as Brian demonstrated just a few of the basics. We all wondered why we had spent so much time with pencil and paper... this looked to be a whole lot more fun and more versatile. Needless to say, every child wanted to try it and they were all able to quickly master a few simple steps with Brian's guidance. I think they would have gladly designed an entire city had we given them time!"

Education Week: Filtering Fixes - 0 views

  • So what teachers and students in Trussville, Ala., are doing on the Internet might be considered illicit activity in other districts across the country. Lessons in the 4,100-student district near Birmingham include YouTube videos and film trailers, Internet chats with peers in Nigeria or award-winning children’s authors, even blogging sessions and Web research on open search engines such as Google.
  • Attempting to use online social-networking tools, read blogs, or see multimedia presentations on a classroom computer can generate a message that’s become all too familiar in many American schools: Access Denied.

This has got to be the funkiest instant poll, quiz, response site around. Create questions, quizzes and polls with optional uploaded images for participants to complete in real time from a computer or mobile device. The users access the quiz by using a pin code. The 'question master' gets the data back instantly and it is stored on the site or can be downloaded. This is superb for checking the knowledge of children in your class or that your audience is still awake. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/ICT+%26+Web+Tools
