This literature review is part of an HPG project entitled 'Civil-Military Coordination: The Search for Common Ground'. This report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of how peacekeeping operations affect and are affected by natural resources and environmental conditions. The report is divided into two main parts. Part 1 reviews the environmental management of peacekeeping operations and showcases good practices, technologies and behaviours that have already been adopted. Part 2 examines the role that peacekeeping operations have played in stabilizing countries where violent conflicts have been financed by natural resources - including diamonds, gold, timber and oil - or driven by grievances over their ownership, access and control.

In December 2012 OCHA endorsed a new Gender Equality Policy - A people-centred approach. The purpose of the policy is to strengthen the way OCHA responds to humanitarian crises by ensuring awareness of the different needs, capacities and voices of all affected population groups. These groups include women, girls, boys and men of all ages, people with disabilities, and other diversity characteristics such as ethnicity and religion. The end result of a people-centred approach is to ensure targeted actions are taken to address these needs and make humanitarian action more effective.

A unique GLobal IDEntifier number (GLIDE) is generated from the beginning of 2004, by an "Automatic GLIDE Generator" for all new disaster events.The components of a GLIDE number consist of two letters to identify the disaster type (e.g. EQ - earthquake); the year of the disaster; a six-digit, sequential disaster number; and the three-letter ISO code for country of occurrence. So, for example, the GLIDE number for West-India Earthquake in India is: EQ-2001-000033-IND. It is widely used unclusive within UN , WB etc

The standards were adopted through an ICRC-led consultation process. They constitute a set of minimum standards for humanitarian and human rights agencies, and we would maintain that the standard of protection that an agency provides should not fall below those set out in this document.
