The 16th edition of World Development Indicators publication and database update contains updated data through 2010 and 2011 for many indicators. This update contains: more recent data on poverty at international poverty lines for more countries, including global and regional estimates measures of malnutrition disaggregated by sex health indicators is aggregated by income quintile data on carbon dioxide emissions by economic sector data on climate variability, exposure to impact, and resilience.

In December 2012 OCHA endorsed a new Gender Equality Policy - A people-centred approach. The purpose of the policy is to strengthen the way OCHA responds to humanitarian crises by ensuring awareness of the different needs, capacities and voices of all affected population groups. These groups include women, girls, boys and men of all ages, people with disabilities, and other diversity characteristics such as ethnicity and religion. The end result of a people-centred approach is to ensure targeted actions are taken to address these needs and make humanitarian action more effective.

The first State of the Humanitarian System report is an ambitious snapshot of the entire humanitarian system. It outlines what's working, what's not, and how the sector has been performing in 2009-2010. The 'international humanitarian system' is defined here as the network of national and international provider agencies, donors and host-government authorities that are functionally connected to each other in the humanitarian endeavour and that share common overarching goals, norms and principles. The system also includes actors that do not have humanitarian assistance as their central mission but play important humanitarian roles, such as military and private-sector entities.

The Index for Risk Management (InfoRM) initiative began in October 2012 as a convergence of interests of United Nations agencies, humanitarian donors and the European Commission to establish a common evidence-base for global humanitarian risk analysis. A concept was developed by a core group of agencies and presented publicly at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in May 2013. Many of these interactions occur through the use of mobile devices being used by people in the developing world, people whose needs and habits have been poorly understood until now. Researchers and policymakers are beginning to realise the potential for channelling these torrents of data into actionable information that can be used to identify needs, provide services, and predict and prevent crises for the benefit of low-income populations. Concerted action is needed by governments, development organisations, and companies to ensure that this data helps the individuals and communities who create it.

This literature review is part of an HPG project entitled 'Civil-Military Coordination: The Search for Common Ground'. This two-year research and public affairs project explores how recent global developments have affected the relationship between military and humanitarian actors, with the aim of facilitating more effective and principled ollaboration to support better humanitarian outcomes for crisis-affected populations. This paper identifies key trends emerging from the literature on civil-military coordination in conflicts and natural disasters. It deals with the interaction between international humanitarian and international or foreign military actors operating in crisis contexts, and offers some reflections on the relationship between national military actors and the international humanitarian community

This report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of how peacekeeping operations affect and are affected by natural resources and environmental conditions. The report is divided into two main parts. Part 1 reviews the environmental management of peacekeeping operations and showcases good practices, technologies and behaviours that have already been adopted. Part 2 examines the role that peacekeeping operations have played in stabilizing countries where violent conflicts have been financed by natural resources - including diamonds, gold, timber and oil - or driven by grievances over their ownership, access and control.
