Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy (HABIT) in Children with Hemiplegia is a new intervention developed at Columbia University. HABIT aims to improve the use and coordination of both arms in daily function. It involves intensive bimanual training. Like CI therapy, it requires 90 hours of intensive therapy and it is performed in group settings with an emphasis of having fun. But unlike CI therapy HABIT focuses on improving the ability to perform bimanual activities. The efficacy of this new bimanual treatment for improving coordination with two hands is being tested.

Preterm infants are born with immature lungs and often require help with breathing shortly after birth. This currently involves administering 100% oxygen. Unfortunately, delivery of high oxygen concentrations leads to the production of free radicals that can injure many organ systems. Term and near-term newborns deprived of oxygen during or prior to birth respond as well or better to resuscitation with room air (21% oxygen) compared to 100% oxygen. However, a static concentration of 21% oxygen may be inappropriate for preterm infants with lung disease. Our study will investigate how adjusting the amount of oxygen given to sick preterm newborns will affect the ability to maintain a safe oxygen level in their blood

The North American Clinical Trials Network (NACTN) is one more way that the Reeve Foundation is moving promising therapies from the lab to spinal cord injured patients. NCA is a major contributor to the study of disability and inclusion in the life sciences. Through the comprehensive services of Research, Technical Assistance and Education, NCA focuses on universal design and practical accessibility solutions creating inclusive recreation opportunities for people of all abilities. NCA links the preferences and needs of people with disabilities to those of practitioners designing facilities and planning programs.

PubMed Abstract of study to evaluate the effect of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SRD) Surgery on functional abilities in a well-defined group of ambulatory children with Spastic Diplegia

University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey 2007 Study documents Widespread Repair of Neonatal Brain Injury from Adult Stem Cells - Neuroscientists at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School have discovered that the neonatal brain possesses a previously unknown capacity to replace damaged neurons in multiple brain regions. Furthermore, their research reveals that the production of these new neurons lasts for at least five months following injury.Levison's study reveals that in addition to neurons acquiring new or different responsibilities, that another adaptive response, one that has not been suspected, occurs. Their data show that large numbers of new neurons are produced from the brain's resident stem cells during their recovery from injury. These findings suggest that these new neurons are further increasing the infant brain's ability to repair itself after injury.

The relation between eye movement and brain function is a subject of interest to the National Eye Institute. By comparing eye movement in healthy volunteers to research conducted on patients who have difficulty moving their eyes, the National Eye Institute hopes to develop and improve diagnostic procedures for people with eye diseases. Objectives: To study eye movement in 100 healthy adult and child volunteers. To understand how individuals see visual patterns and how eye movement affects the ability to see.
