2010 Ongoing study being conducted by NICHD - STAN Fetal Heart Monitor trial at clinicaltrials.gov - Research to test a new instrument, called a fetal STAN monitor, that may be used during labor to monitor the electrical activity of the baby's heart. This new instrument is designed to help the doctor determine how well the baby is doing during labor. It will be used along with the existing electronic fetal monitor used to measure the baby's heart rate and the mother's contractions during birth. The specific purpose of this research study is to see if this new instrument (fetal STAN monitor) will have an impact on newborn health.

Surgical unit nearly 6,000 surgeries performed annually. Intensive care unit serves children with traumatic injuries, life-threatening illness and children recovering from major surgery. We're a neonatal intensive care unit caring for about 500 critically ill or premature newborn babies a year; some children who weigh one pound at birth.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Developmental Disabilities Study (MADDS) was the first U.S., population-based epidemiologic study of the prevalence of intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, vision impairment, and epilepsy in school-aged children. National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) staff have written scientific papers using information from MADDS. These papers look at such topics as how common autism spectrum disorders are and what causes hearing loss in children. The NICHD Neonatal Research Network's Follow-Up study is a multi-center cohort in which surviving extremely low birth-weight infants born in participating network centers receive neurodevelopmental, neurosensory and functional assessments at 18-22 months corrected age. Data regarding pregnancy and neonatal outcome are collected prospectively. The goal is to identify potential maternal and neonatal risk factors that may affect infant neurodevelopment.
