What Is Google App Engine? - Google App Engine - Google Code - 0 views

  • Google App Engine lets you run web applications on Google's infrastructure. App Engine applications are easy to build, easy to maintain, and easy to scale as your traffic and data storage needs grow. With App Engine, there are no servers to maintain: You just upload your application, and it's ready to serve your users.

A very interesting area that our future ET programmer could take a look at... perhaps we can find a way to integrate e-portfolio learning with mobile geolocation / other data types using this Google App Engine. Oh yes, it's free too.

Specifically for programmers to take note, but for any and all in CeL who want a small insight into what the more tech-savvy inservice teacher or head of department prefers to use.

Interesting. Perhaps when we release students survey on Bb/ICT use, we can attempt to capture the reason/s for the shift.

How MOOCs Could Meet the Challenge of Providing a Global Education | MIT Technology Review - 0 views

  • As MOOCs cast their eye to the developing world, very minor tweaks matter a great deal, such as the ability to allow students to download, rather than only stream course videos. But even more major ones are coming, including edX’s plans to start open-sourcing its platform in the next few months, which could allow even more universities to post online courses, and software programmers around the world to experiment with customized interfaces.
  • “We need to make sure we are making tools that make it easy to create new content, so it’s not only someone at MIT or Stanford who creates.” Relevance, as he notes, is one of the biggest motivators for students.
  • One of the major challenges for MOOCs—which so far mostly come from U.S. universities—is to tailor the content of courses to a diverse worldwide audience with any number of combinations of language, educational, motivational, and cultural backgrounds. Critics fear the rise of big box education from only a few elite institutions in Western nations, and worry these may not fit the different learning styles in different nations.

If i can recall what I have read up quite some time ago, there needs to be a team managing this site. It involves administrators, programmers, lecturers, content contributors, etc. Thus, if we were to set this up, we need to gather the required people first.

Detect Naughty Pictures and Video with Nude.js - 0 views

  • nude.js is a JavaScript implementation of a nudity scanner based on approaches from research papers. HTMLCanvas makes it possible to analyse image data and return whether it's nude or not. The script only detects nudity, the rest of the programming logic (image swap/auto-save ;-) /whatever) belongs to the programmer.

If only more of our NIE staff thought and acted this way!

Influence them from top down and bottom up. Our stakeholders like ACIS, Programme Offices and AG supports may be our initial targets. Hopefully with a bigger support group, we will be able to induce the others to come on board. I am trying to influence my bus buddies in a small way too :)
