Tony Vincent's Learning in Hand - Blog - Make Your Podcast Sticky [Infographic] - 0 views

  • Sticky ideas are ones that we can plainly understand, clearly remember, and easily retell. When teachers and students make educational podcasts, whether audio or video, we want them to be sticky.

Interview with Dr Ashley on Web 2.0 technology and its relevance to teaching - 0 views

  •
My instructor from Penn State U shared his thought on the podcast. "I was very intrigued by his reference to Alan Kay when he talked about how the tools shape us via our interactions with them. Kay was (and is) most definitely one of the most visionary and original thinkers when it comes to technology and its applications. To be sure, this point about how the tools shape us is a very good one to emphasize. Tools are not innocuous things and metacognitive awareness can help both teachers and learners think about how their perceptions of ideas, concepts, etc are influenced by the tools they use to express their understandings of these things that they encounter." P/S Apologies for the poor editing by Rachel (first time using Audacity)

3G powers Singapore school's 21st century classroom - 1 views

NIE is mentioned in this article talking about mobile technology in schools. And the platform chosen was Windows.... The National Institute of Education of Singapore is assisting teachers with the development of customized curriculum in English, Science and Chinese that leverages the benefits of mobile, Internet-connected, learning devices and provides students with new learning opportunities that are not possible with paper and pencil. We co-design technology enabled lessons with the teachers and provide professional development to teachers that enable them to enact lessons using smartphones. It is critical to empower teachers to orchestrate the transformed classroom to support students' personalized learning," says Professor Looi Chee Kit of the National Institute of Education. All smartphones are equipped with MyDesk, a next-generation mobile learning platform tailored to leverage the capabilities of Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system. MyDesk enables each student to access his or her assignments, relevant websites that contain podcasts, textual material and video clips and educational applications, such as concept mapping, drawing and animating, to practice both self-directed and collaborative learning.

A new app lets you send pictures via sound - Computerworld - 2 views

  •
As cool as Chirp is for fun, personal sharing, it's even better for mass communications. For example, TV shows constantly tell viewers to follow them on Twitter or go to some web site. What they're doing is giving the audience a homework assignment, making them type a code in order to receive some information. However, with Chirp, TV shows could just play the chirps. Viewers watching at home would passively receive all the content chirped by the show. TV shows could allow photo "uploads" by phone, too. You can imagine TV shows providing a number that has an answering machine. Users could snap a picture, then leave the chirp of the picture as a message on the machine. It works just as well on radio, on podcasts, in videos and any situation where sound is involved.

Five Essential Skills for the Facebook Era - IEEE Spectrum - 0 views

  • “If print culture shaped the environment from which the Enlightenment blossomed and set the scene for the Industrial Revolution, participatory media might similarly forge the cognitive and social environments in which 21st-century life will take place.”
  • the “literacy of participation,” and I guess this consists of the social norms of social media. What are they, and why are they so important?

If i can recall what I have read up quite some time ago, there needs to be a team managing this site. It involves administrators, programmers, lecturers, content contributors, etc. Thus, if we were to set this up, we need to gather the required people first.

On the media by stanford, seems like they have lots of in-house videos to share. For NIE, I wonder ...

E-learning: The future of education? - Education - Mail & Guardian Online - 1 views

  • The recent growth of ebooks and tablet computers, like the iPad, is fuelling the drive towards digital education. For the first time, institutions are thinking of innovative ways to incorporate digital content into learning programs. The potential to reach a global audience is also significant. And online learning need not be static or impersonal: on the contrary, it offers unparalleled opportunities for interactivity and open communication among students and teachers
  • Another attractive feature of online learning is that it is much more accessible than traditional tuition. Since resources can be spread instantly and for free to anyone in the world, learning is immediate, affordable and rewarding. It does not attract the hidden costs of contact based learning, like transport, material and stationery costs, which makes it valuable for less-privileged students. It also allows working people to gain valuable education in the time available to them, so that they can increase their skills and improve their working lives.
  • Many universities are now posting video lectures, reading materials and other resources for free online. The range of materials covers everything from introductory videos and podcasts to advanced textbooks and detailed research -- a true multimedia experience.

  • Gates says that it's not enough just to have good content: it needs to be organised in a useful way and backed up with a solid teaching support network. It is difficult to test knowledge or prove capabilities without structured academic programs. But this is where the internet can truly shine: an online course is not hampered by physical constraints or the high costs of full-time, contact-based learning. One teacher can easily oversee and support many students from anywhere in the world, and learning can be done at the student's pace, with access to a wider range of materials, discussions and resources than would be possible in a traditional physical learning environment.
