  • A pair of MIT Media Lab alums have come up with a do-it-yourself kit for making smart environments. David Carr and John Kestner, partners in the industrial design firm Supermechanical, have developed a small, durable, inexpensive remote sensor node, and an easy-to-use web app that turns data from the sensor node into timely information. The system, dubbed Twine, lets you tie everyday objects into your digital life.
  • Twine is a palm-size block of rubber that contains a WiFi node, temperature sensor and accelerometer. It’s powered by two AAA batteries or a mini USB connection. And it has a port where external sensors can connect. The initial external sensors are a magnetic switch, moisture sensor and a breakout board for building your own sensor. Supermechanical is also considering an RFID reader, pressure sensor and current sensor.

    I llike my friend's summary: "The way we think affects the way we learn. If we think we passed a test because we're "smart", then we don't work so hard and learn less. If we think we passed a test because we "worked hard", then we work harder and learn more. And if we think making mistakes helps us learn (instead of making us look stupid), then we tend to learn more." I think this is one major reason why children can learn and master tough games so fast, but take forever to solve a Maths test problem.

      One research paper on E-service learning: A pedagogic innovation for healthcare management education, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16700443 It appears to be successful as they identified more areas for implementation: The authors then define and conceptualize e-service learning, including the anticipated outcomes of implementation such as enhanced access, quality, and cost effectiveness of healthcare management education. Because e-service learning is mediated by technology, we identify state of the art technologies that support e-service learning activities. In addition, possible e-service learning projects and activities that may be included in healthcare management courses such as finance, human resources, quality, service management/marketing and strategy are identified. Finally, opportunities for future research are suggested.

    A very interesting journal essay that points out how info overload is not a new problem, but one that has existed ever since the first books. The writer examines how people in the previous centuries used the then-new technology of printing to help them handle the "plague of books" that was overwhelming their libraries. He then reminds us, that at the core of it all, it is not the technology itself that enables and empowers learning, but an ecology of human-tech interaction that helps us learn more effectively in today's Toffler-esque world.   • Repeat visitors during a four-month trial will be able to check in through their phones before arrival and have their phones activated as "keys." They will then be able to skip the registration desk and unlock the door by holding the phone next to it.The short-range radio technology, known as Near Field Communication, is expected to be built into smart phones in the coming years. It is also envisioned for ticketing and card payments. Assa Abloy says it wanted to test the system before expanding it to other hotels, commercial buildings and homes.
