      I find this sentence important because it drives home the point that authentic resources can serve a variety of purposes, from "hooking the students" or activating global knowledge to complex assignments resulting in student presentations, etc. It's a good reminder that, rather than searching for that one perfect piece while under pressure to plan a lesson, it's a good idea to start a digital collection of materials that strike me as interesting.

They need to be focused on the unit theme. Perhaps most importantly, they should force students to use the target language.

      This reminds me of the assessment class I took at CARLA where I learned about the importance of using authentic materials to help boost student engagement and language learning.

    Amazing blog! I really like the explanation they provide for authenticity since it is not just decoration of the classroom with the cultural aspects of the target language. I will be using some of the activities they suggest :-)

    This is such a valuable resource. While it felt validating to see some of the activities that I already use on these lists, they also gave me new ideas to try for next semester. I am sure students will appreciate the variety.

    I have used both Veinte Mundos and Paperboy--Wondering if I can use EdPuzzle/ Playposit, or Diigo with these-- I think that will help with greater student engagement and my ability to track what they are 'doing' with these resources-- It is not enough to assign them to watch/ read, I need to provide the activity to accompany it.

    If a tech device is not available for all students in class, you can do silent talk using a pen and paper. I used to call this activity "Pencil Talk"

    Focusing on authenticity makes students more inclined to participate. In addition, activities should be engaging, varied, focused on the unit theme and force students to use the target language. This article has suggestions for engaging activities for the interpretive, interpersonal and presentational mode. Many of these activities use technology, and the author provides links to the apps. A very useful and quick read.

    I was drawn to this because the title was intriguing:) The idea of the app is an interesting one, although my first reaction in the example one here is that there are potentially a lot of stereotypes being (re)produced. I would be curious what you do with it!

    This easy-to-read introduction to SAMR (standing for "Substitution," "Augmentation," "Modification" and "Redefinition"), a model for helping integrate "technology tools into foreign-language classrooms," is blogged by a Chinese content and technology specialist who, I trust, has a lot of experience of incorporating media into Chinese learning activities. Besides clearly explaining how the SAMR model works for a L2 class via really useful tech tools such as Google Docs and Flipgrid, this blog also reveals a fact that our students "are not all 'digital natives,'" and encourages us, 21st-century educators, to "meet our students halfway to use tech for learning." I found the first two SAMR stages, namely, "Substitution" and "Augmentation," are very helpful for evaluating the interpretive mode implemented with appropriate media.

They have an online immersion program for several different languages but also maintain different blogs for certain audiences. This one is the "General Educator Blog." I found their content helpful and really informative.

    This is a big issue we are facing in our community. This what I was mentioning about using media as academic resources. Also many different fields required a very specific vocabulary so often interpreters are not able to keep up with academic languages because they are taught the community language.

      Use opinions to heighten interest.
  • I really don't think that extensive worksheets provide a particularly authentic experience - such a thing mainly just erodes the power of the message within the video, takes away the inherent pleasure in learning from TED speakers.

  • Ask them what they think the speaker will be discussing and why they think this.   Do they have any pre-formed opinions on the subject matter?  After watching, get them to talk about whether or not the video met their expectations.  Why, why not?
  • While watching, any video you've chosen, ask them to write ten words they found most interesting / or ten words they didn't understand / or ten words which they think would summarize the story.  
  • Show the video and ask your students what the main points discussed in the video were.  Ask them to choose sides on these - to take an opposing view from others in the classroom and to debate it.
  • Watch one of videos marked as informative and get them to write down questions while-watching and post-viewing.

      A comprehensive way to cover the material. Includes many points of conversation.
  • who/what/where/when/why/how   Show the video you've (or one of your students') chosen and tell them they shouldn't write anything down while they're watching. After the video is finished, ask students to sit in groups and discuss what they watched, who was the presenter, why did she make this speech, how effective was it: encourage them to ask each other questions and share opinions.

    This is a great interpersonal activity, although I would imagine student reactions to it may vary. For instance, some students (like me) may find it stressful not to write things down. On the other hand, not writing things down takes the pressure off for being "perfect" and puts the attention on the spontaneous nature of the interpersonal mode.

      I'm really interested in creating an activity similar to what's described in #2. I think once I have the infrastructure worked out, it will be easy to repeat for different locations and different places of interest (restaurants, parks, whatever) in each city.

Try using the Pear Deck Chrome extension for listening and drawing activities: Add a Pear Deck interactive “Drawing” slide and read a description aloud.For example, I will read the following description aloud (in Spanish) to my Spanish I classes: “The boy is tall, thin, and has black, curly hair and green eyes.
