    These are great! I wish that we were allowed to use youtube in our courses. I guess that before using this tool you would have to make sure that youtube would be allowed in your school. Some sites such as this and vimeo are blocked.

    I really like this idea! The teacher can give a much more detailed commentary on the assessment and with that the student may come away with a better understanding of necessary improvements.

    This is a great idea and I like that there are other gadgets that can be used in conjunction. However I assume this would only be useful if you are a f2f teacher. In Blackboard we have wimba voice authoring which allows us to give audio feedback. I use this tool a lot and I feel that those who actually listen to my feedback profit from it.

    Although this article is about British language education and it's two years old, my interest was piqued when I read it: ""Languages cannot be taught, they can only be learnt. The best way is to tell students right away that they are responsible for their own learning process, and the teacher is just a guide who has to motivate them."" Made me think about relevancy and how Tech is only one part of that.

    Fascinating article. Quotes a professor of linguistics who suggests that one reason for the move to Task Based learning is that in the UK, unlike in Europe, students don't know English grammar - so teachers can no longer use that as a bridge between languages! The article also quotes Michael Erard, author of 'Babel No More,' - a study of people who speak multiple languages - says: "They use a mix [of methods], with a focus on accomplishing tasks, whether it's communicative tasks or translation tasks."

    Yes, the Erard quote really gets to the heart of it: what combination of learning methods will work for each, individual student? Learning is personal and those who develop their own methods (hopefully with effective guidance) will go far.

    Really interesting. I wonder if we changed the setting to the U.S. if the same difficulties would apply. I never really thought about grammar being discarded simply because students don't know it well enough. While I've found that most students we teach don't understand their mother tongue, I still think that the shift to task-based work had as much to do with the lack of real communication skills. Just teaching them grammar and relying on them to go abroad to learn to speak wasn't doing it. That being said, I think the mixture of methods is best, and by mixture I mean the integration of many methods into accomplishing a task. And I agree that the meta-learning is key.

    I remember getting a comment from a student once, many years ago, that she had learned more about English grammar in my Spanish class than anywhere else... (sigh)

      This to me is very important. There are always a couple students who will never want to participate in class, at least not orally. This will be such a relief to this type of student and I will be happy to count this as a way of participating in the course.

      I agree 100% there are many more introverted students that are wary of participating in class discussions, VT allows them to participate more without feeling uncomfortable.

      I like that students have the option of texting their response. Since I tech at a boarding school, those students that are in supervised study hall, may text their response so they won't interrupt others' studying. As long as I inform the proctors and the students don't stay on their devices for too long ;)

      I've done this at conferences - a great way to get notes from one session while you're in another.  And a way to plan where to meet up for dinner! Teachers in lecture classes use Twitter as a "back channel" for students to use to ask questions and discuss while the lecture is in progress. Oh, I see this is mentioned in the "Community" section below...

    I think this Blog is rich with possibility for utilizing social media for the teaching of a second language. Students so much into social media and they also get motivated by change in ideas and activities. The variety of possibilities that this blog offers provides a teacher with a good resource that would work for various language levels.

The last time I used Drive, I created a shared class folder with students before the first day of school. I populated it with dated folders and assignments that all students had access to. Similarly, I had students share a folder with me for homework on their first day. This folder would be their digital dropbox.

    This is terrific, Marlene. I intend to look into this Blog for my Action Research project for the IBSC (International Boys' Schools Coalition) I am part of. I am supposed to work all year long on my action and report on my findings next summer at the annual gathering in London (We are a team of 16 language teachers from all over).       Still not sure about the relationship of all of these social networking tools to FERPA. Can you require students to post work on a site not run by the school ... and if so, what happens if there is a security compromise? These are all tools that I would use personally, but am uncomfortable advocating their use to a wider audience without explicit permission ... which is an incredibly time consuming process.

    "they" would say no without even reading/listening to my reasons. Better to ask forgiveness than permission but it may not be worth your job and it's definitely not worth the safety of students.
