    Digital storytelling is so awesome! I got a chance to create a digital story through the Minnesota Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute and it was an awesome experience. I'd highly recommend looking into your local branch of the National Writing Project to see what resources or professional development are available.

When we provide applications that let users manage information, and those users have limited to no awareness of knowledge organization for the Web, the information architectures that evolve for users and the entire system may be less than optimal. Since most users are not equipped to produce sound classification schemes or efficient top-down taxonomies on their own, their impact on any system creates what I call a literacy gap, depicted in Figure 6. Depending on the other signatures of information overload that play out in users’ interaction with a system, the consequences of their literacy gap can lead to information overload.       The above excerpt reminds me of a collaborative review project that we did in my class at the end of the last school year. We broke down each unit and lesson that we had covered into chunks and each student was supposed to make virtual flashcards (on quizlet.com) with their chunk of the material. Some students did great while others were absolutely lost while using the computers. It had a deleterious effect on the overall project. as I try to imagine implementing more web resources with the goal of productive communication and interaction in L2, I am troubled by the disparity of web/computer literacy among students. I don't mean to sound negative, but it is something I really struggle with. What about the students who lack the necessary skills?

      Even when working with teachers, we find this in workshops.  We tend to pair/group teachers, so they can help each other out - have you tried that with students?

      Yes, I did assign pairs. Some students are smartphone literate and seem to have little to no interest in anything desktop. Hmmm...perhaps I should try focusing on the ipads.

      We have had some rather unpleasant situations recently with students using Google translate to write essays outside class. I agree that the policy has to be clear and that the implications have to be as well. Several instructors have moved to doing all essay writing in class.

But I'm glad I found it because s a very helpful summary of how to approach a reading with a view to comprehension. and I have highlighted this heading because it's a reminder that reading can take different forms, and that each one is a process -- and those processes often have to be explicitly taught to our L2 students. We all tend to take reading and comprehending for granted and not realize how variety there can be in how we approach at text. and we tend to forget that it's not at all passive. It's a complex process in our L1. How much more so in an L2.

    They're fine...but huge to implement on a consistent basis: by 'huge' I mean both in terms of time, and space - to get one's head around them all conceptually. and it can also be a challenge for students to buy into the responsibility for their own leaning. HTML...yes, sometimes, in designing activities writhing my LMS. Blogging...no! Takes too much thought and self- confidence! Tweeting...yes! I love passing on items that have been helpful to me. and yes...II guess tweeting is providing glimpses of great PD resources. Now all I have to do is to go back to them in more depth.

    This is terrific, Marlene. I intend to look into this Blog for my action Research project for the IBSC (International Boys' Schools Coalition) I am part of. I am supposed to work all year long on my action and report on my findings next summer at the annual gathering in London (We are a team of 16 language teachers from all over).     This is a function that I always thought was lacking in PBworks (compared to Wikispaces, for example) - now they are recommending this app as an add-in. Only a PBworks admin can add this however - you need to click the "allow javascript" button. This page has screenshot instructions, if you're not sure how to add it. HOWEVER - I haven't been able to get it to work, yet... I don't know if it's a login problem or what. It shows up in the wiki page, but I can't add anything to the discussion.

      Has anyone used Thinkquest? It looks like a great way to introduce elementary students to social networking in a safe way. I also posted a great site that does online safety and cyberbulling in 15 minutes lessons with Garfield cartoons for kids.

      Yes, I have used it primarily with middle school students and I have found it quite useful. The last time I used it was several years ago to set up a list of websites to use with a webquest, a very simple and easy thing to do.
