This is not edutainment, it is the conscious use of media to enable students to learn more. Use the subtitles feature for visual media. This is especially useful in focusing student attention on the words being said. be prepared. Technology does not work 100% of the time so have a back up plan. If the media equipment does not work, go to plan B and continue on with your class without missing a beat. Evaluate student understanding. Students respond to incentives. If you require them to write a reaction paper, take a quiz, or place questions on your exams that relate to the media content they will pay more attention and learn more in the process. Stay legal.     thanks for sharing Roxana. I really like how this blog discusses the language and cultural uses of using voicethread to create learning communities. It provided me many practical examples I can use in my classroom to help students focus on langauge development while using the technology. This post puts the focus on learning not on the technology. The handouts are great supports that help students stay on the learning track and because of this, the coummunity of learning is built. I was a little concerned by the deficit language used on the scoring rubric for asynchronous content. I will probably use something similar by change the wording to be a little more constructive, as meaning can be lost online and harsh wording can be misinterpreted.

  • The Advantages of Media for Students: Popular media (films, music, YouTube) are a familiar medium to students that helps gain attention and maintain student interest in the theories and concepts under discussion. Students can see the theories and concepts in action. In more than a figurative sense, theories and concepts leap from the screen. Students can hone their analytical skills by analyzing media using the theories and concepts they are studying. The use of media in the classroom enables students to see concepts and new examples when they are watching television, listening to music, or are at the movies with friends. Students can experience worlds beyond their own, especially if the media is sharply different from their local environment.

      We have had some rather unpleasant situations recently with students using Google translate to write essays outside class. I agree that the policy has to be clear and that the implications have to be as well. Several instructors have moved to doing all essay writing in class.

      This to me is very important. There are always a couple students who will never want to participate in class, at least not orally. This will be such a relief to this type of student and I will be happy to count this as a way of participating in the course.

      I agree 100% there are many more introverted students that are wary of participating in class discussions, VT allows them to participate more without feeling uncomfortable.

      I like that students have the option of texting their response. Since I tech at a boarding school, those students that are in supervised study hall, may text their response so they won't interrupt others' studying. As long as I inform the proctors and the students don't stay on their devices for too long ;)

    I agree that we need to really access why we want to use technology. Is it really the best option all of the time? I love the checklist of questions one should ask him/herself before deciding to use the technology. I, especially, thought the question "Will students control the technology?. Sometimes, I need to remember that spending hours creating a great powerpoint presentation isn't as great as finding a way for students to engage in an interaction rather than passively listen to a lecture.

      This is protocol in my classroom-they may as well learn it right the first time rather than the hard way later. When using Google images: go all the way to the cog wheel pull down on the right side of the toolbar; 2) go down to Advance Search; 3) inside Advanced Image Search, all the way at the bottom is a pulldown for usage rights, select "free to use or share" or, if you need to alter the image in anyway "fee to use share or modify." 
  • That is, in some cases, if an image, text, video, etc. is being used for educational purposes, there might be more flexible copyright rules.

      Just yesterday I was watching a webinar from a national organization, and on one of the PowerPoint pages I saw a picture of one of my district's students with his PE teacher. I was shocked and wondered how it came to be in this webinar. I can only guess that there was a newpaper article with this picture in the local paper, and that put it out there on the web, and it was found and inserted into this PowerPoint. I also thought it was pretty cool - one of ours in something like that. It was crazy just happening upon it like I did though.

      This is a biggie! I know of some teachers who upload all their homework handouts in .pdf format. I can think of only one who might have asked permission to do so. But, why bother buying that textbook's workbook if I can download it from another district for free. I can certainly see publishers having issue with that.

      I still have doubts about this aspect. Most of my students prefer to be taught grammar and vocabulary in class rather by themselves with a computer. Once again how much can we offer them though online and how much should we explain this in class?
