Designing and Implementing Synchronous Language Tasks - 11 views

Synchronous tasks can include: text, audio, virtual worlds... can be: highly interactive and collaborative, instant, quick with shorten forms, spontaneous and may generate multiple incorrect forms while students negotiate meaning.
  • asks should give the learners the opportunity to create contents,  which motivates them. • Synchronous communication tasks give students the opportunity to develop an audience for authentic communication. • Tasks should be focused on thinking skills. • It provides collaborative learning experience. • Tasks should give students proof of getting their ideas across • Creates a learning environment that goes beyond the classroom. • Vocabulary improvement

I would like to use this list as a check list when I create a synchronous activity. This list also can applies to any communicative task in the classroom.

  • B. Install the “Diigolet” into your browser  (Due Thursday, July 16)

Now I can add a note and save it to the group. It should show up in the Diigo group page list of posts - with a colored bar alongside the note, or a little post-it note icon.
  •
If you are seeing this with the Chrome Extension - I'm discovering that there is no way to share your highlights and post-it notes with the group. Go back and install the Diigolet - instructions in Week 2!

"...no differences were found between video and FTF groups." The article shows that CMC performance is very similar to FTF--this suggests to me that recorded Skype conversations (or similar recorded online CMC work) could serve as a good way to practice and assess interpersonal communication skills.

Flip Your Language Classroom the Right Way | Language News - 4 views

  • It’s important to note that this process is different from, for example, simply giving students a video of grammar rules to watch at home, then going over the concepts from that video in class.
    • Anne Dixon

I couldn't agree with this more.  Watching a grammar video would be so boring for my students.  I like to be present when explaining grammar concepts so I can answer their questions.
    • Anne Dixon

I never thought about it this way before but I can see how technology in a flipped classroom can provide immediate and accurate feedback to students.

  • In the flipped teaching model, students “front load” their language abilities by learning vocabulary and phrases independently before each class. Teachers can then build on what their students have already learned, practicing and applying that knowledge in class through com

I still have doubts about this aspect. Most of my students prefer to be taught grammar and vocabulary in class rather by themselves with a computer. Once again how much can we offer them though online and how much should we explain this in class?

Education World: Five Ways to Use Padlet in Class - 3 views

  • Padlet is a free, online "virtual wall" tool where users can express thoughts on topics of their choice. It's like a piece of paper, but on the Web.
    • vivianfranco

I like Padlet because it seems it is a simple tool to get our students participate inside/outside the classroom. Sometimes students feel frustrated when they struggle with technology and then they have to figure out how to develop the task. So presenting the students easy ways to learn through technology can lower this cognitive overload.

Yikes! I thought 50 ideas was a lot. Nice that the author included some sites that help to organize the tweets. One tool I would add to the list http://wiffiti.com/. You can set up a wall to accept a hash tag that, when used in a tweet, will display almost immediately on the wall. Excellent way to display student comment via a projector.

So many ways to use technology in the classroom! We can be creative and motivate our students to be creative as well.

Why Teachers And Students Should Blog: 18 Benefits of Educational Blogging - 3 views

  • let’s explore why blogging has lasted while other tools have come and gone. The simple reason is, a blog is more than a tool. It’s anything you want it to be. A blog is a blank canvas and a virtual home for you to set up however you like.Blogs are simply websites. The only real difference between a blog and a traditional website is that it is generally updated more frequently and usually offers interaction in the form of comments.
    • jenniferacarr

Morris highlights an interesting tech tradeoff: the simpler a tool is, the more versatile it can be. As she points out, blogs are just frequently-updated websites, and yet they've managed to outlast other online tools because of their relative flexibility.
  •
A blog post about blogs. Kathleen Morris lists no fewer than 18 educational benefits of using sites like WordPress and Blogger in the classroom. These include allowing students to develop new literacies and exercise their creativity.

Teaching world languages in the virtual classroom | SmartBrief - 5 views

  • One “choice” assignment I regularly offer students is letting them engage in a texting conversation in Spanish and send me the screenshots. This assignment seems more like fun than like work. Plus, students are able to use the language in an authentic, realistic way.

This looks like an easy way to have learners interact outside of class.
  • Connect students with another class and set up a virtual pen pal program. (Bonus points if you can arrange this with a class in a country in which the target language is spoken.)

I love this idea, but I'm wondering if it's feasible during the pandemic.
  • If you aim to use authentic resources in your classes and expose your students to infographics, advertisements, or news articles in the target language, Actively Learn epitomizes convenience and efficiency. This website allows teachers to embed standards-based questions within an online text. As they read, students can respond in the target language about the main idea and purpose of the text, as well as the author’s tone and opinion. Actively Learn also provides useful data for teachers, including the amount of time students spent reading. Rather than opening a series of tabs leading to different documents, students are able to read and respond all in one place.

Lots of good ideas. I would like to look into Actively Learning. Sounds like a great resource. Pear Deck is another one I would like to try. I agree that the virtual pen pals sounds like fun, as does having students text in Spanish and send you screenshots. They already have tons of personal experience with that already.
