A good article in favor of learning multiple languages!  The first part mentions a number of tech apps for assisting in global learning collaborations.

Fascinating interview of Michael Horn (co-founder of a non-profit innovation think tank) and Vibhu Mittal (CEO of Edmodo) on the impact of social learning networks such as Edmodo on the classroom. Some topics covered: blended learning, privacy and student data, collaboration between teachers and between students, personalized learning.

Abstract: "Students deepen their content knowledge and collaborative skills as they interact with others across the globe. In order to deepen early childhood students' awareness and understanding of the world, teachers worked with their classes to develop and share school-based virtual field trips. The researcher sought to (a) identify the steps to create a school-based virtual field trip, and (b) understand how virtual field trips can promote global and/or content understandings. Qualitative results reveal that the steps taken to create a trip varied by grade. Students were motivated to teach other students about their school and were able to learn about different cultures. A variety of literacy skills were also utilized in the virtual field trips."

Wetoku is a web service or Web 2.0 tool out of Korea that provides a simple platform for interviewing someone via the Internet. Collaborating globally is a must for our students and as result interviewing can be a challenge. Wetoku makes doing an interview as easy as filling out some basic information, creating an interview session and then sending the creative interview session's URL to the interviewee. Once the recording is done, the interviewer can embed the copy of the URL into a blog or website. You will need a web-cam for this tool.

This is a great resource--I'm looking in to the Global Education Certificate written up on the blog, it sounds like something my students would be really interested in pursuing.

I really like the phrase "instrumental empathy" -- I think it's something great to strive for in our classrooms and to integrate into our lessons.

I want to say that they have been around in a number of forms over many years - maybe even started at St Olaf College as Classroom to Classroom Connections back in the 90's?? But they've grown into a huge corporation now! These kinds of projects are the ones I like the best - when you get kids talking to each other!

Very helpful for those who are still getting to know ACTFL standards. Includes short, non-jargony descriptions for studnts, and linked PDFs with various skills/tasks that they can check off for monitoring of their own progress in the interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive modes.

This recorded webinar covered some of the ground that our Web 2.0 class covered in 2014, but it had a much more thorough discussion of Google+ Hangout and Skype that we found. Highly recommended.
