  • My absolute essential for “real life” teaching is a whiteboard. Obviously, this is tricky to use via Skype. Thankfully, I discovered Twiddla! It’s an online whiteboard tool that you and anyone who you share the link with can see and edit at the same time. Perfect for awkward explanations you just can’t do with words and emoticons!

    It would be a great tool if you teach on Skype. But after having learned about Zoom, I would forget about Skype. Zoom has so much more to offer and it can be free if you use it in 40 minute increments.

  • Micro-blogging via Twitter is another way to link students outside of class. Let's be honest -- there are not many young people out there who do not already tweet. You can use Twitter in class in a similar fashion to blogging. If you do, I strongly suggest that you use TweetDeck to efficiently manage your students' tweets. I also love having students tweet a story. You start by tweeting the first line of the story based on the unit you are studying.

      Adrianne, I found the site with a lot of information. I particularly enjoyed "Virtual Exchanges in the Foreign Language Classroom." It explains how to make the target language more accessible to students allowing for an understanding of perspectives and practices. Good outline of benefits of virtual exchanges.

    I have used both Veinte Mundos and Paperboy--Wondering if I can use EdPuzzle/ Playposit, or Diigo with these-- I think that will help with greater student engagement and my ability to track what they are 'doing' with these resources-- It is not enough to assign them to watch/ read, I need to provide the activity to accompany it.

    Focusing on authenticity makes students more inclined to participate. In addition, activities should be engaging, varied, focused on the unit theme and force students to use the target language. This article has suggestions for engaging activities for the interpretive, interpersonal and presentational mode. Many of these activities use technology, and the author provides links to the apps. A very useful and quick read.

    Some good advice for online and hybrid course engagement. One of the comments below says - even for F2F classes! One of the comments also questions the point about responding to all student posts - saying that it's better to let them discuss without you, only adding in occasionally or with a summary or notes in a weekly wrap-up. This "hands-off" discussion method is the route Alyssa and I have taken, what has worked for you?

    I totally agree with you. I think that RS is a good tool to use in place of a textbook, but it doesn't change the fact that you need more than a textbook to learn something with great quality. Conversation is key and having someone there to converse with is what helps and increases the learning. If you don't use it, you loose it fast.

      Isis, I wanted to comment on this tool, stating I like the fact that is free and one does not need an account. Anyways, I wanted to add sticky note but I accidentally clicked on Vocaroo and the page popped up on my screen ready for me to provide my voice. Pretty cool!
  • Vocaroo is a free service that allows users to create audio recordings without the need to install any software. You don't even have to create an account to use Vocaroo. All you need to provide is a microphone. I used the microphone built into my MacBook to make the recording below. To create a recording just go to Vocaroo.com, click record, grant Voca

    I have been using this app as a smart board. The advantages are: you can add/edit notes as you teach, highlight vocabulary or grammar elemen, you can also use notes from previous lessons and you could also email the presented material on the Ipad to students. Students love it and it makes learning more interactive.
