Some are whiteboards, like Dabbleboard, or brainstorming tools and mind-mapping tools (Thinkature), project management, Stixy for post-its, an online meeting "playground," called Twiddla, and some old favs, like Wetpaint, G-Docs, and Skype. a jumble, but of interest because most have an online collaboration element. Very brief descriptions of each, but little on pedagogy.

Poetica is still in Beta stage as of this writing, but looks to be a good service for composition and peer editing. You click on a space or word, drag out a line and type in a comment or question. R. Byrne has a nice image of the interface.

This article has a nice video that shows a teacher in class explaining copyright and fair use to students using a document linked from the article. I tend to disagree that teachers making multiple copies for classroom use is a "fair use," however. Always check what the author says, and use Creative Commons if you don't want your ideas ripped off without permission.

An outstanding online image editor for all purposes. Relatively easy to use.

A great lesson plan for writing collaboratively. Students extract memento and write them on large cards/pieces of paper. They then create the poem by placing the cards on the floor or table. The teacher (or students) select a topic that the quotations should reflect. It makes students thing about the real meanings within the text. Students discuss their found quotations as they write them. The 5 min. video shows students discussing and coming to realizations as they collect and collaborate. Great speaking, writing, reading activity.

This is not about the technical how-to of G-Docs. The teacher instead discusses the pedagogical aspects of how collaboration works, as students write a collaborative essay and discuss it together as they write. The teacher also explains how she does formative assessment as the students write. Using Goggle Docs she can see who contributes and how much.

Shows brainstorming, text talk time, and writing --an overview, shown with with ELLs in middle school. Each aspect of the student interactions demonstrates a Common Core theme or principle. Nice titling in the video makes clear what the concepts are. A good demonstration of excellence in teaching.

A recent lesson from Mike Marzio. These are invaluable and carefully details to make the best use of the videos. Select a grammatical form or vocabulary set to review. Mostly for adult learners.

"The participants were given an intelligence test in 1947 at the age of 11 and were retested in their early 70s, between 2008 and 2010. Of the participants, 262 said they were able to communicate in at least one language other than English. Of those, 195 learned the second language before the age of 18, while 65 learned the language after this age. Researchers found that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better cognitive abilities in later life, compared to what would be predicted from their performance in the tests at age 11. " However, it might be that people who learn a second language also perform many other brain-activating functions throughout their lives.
