Nik focses on how teacher can combine online tools to encourage students' digital literacy and linguistic skills more autonomously. The Reading Matrix: An International Online Journal is a peer-reviewed professional journal with an editorial board of scholars in the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics. The journal seeks to disseminate research to educators around the world. It is interested in exploring issues related to L2 reading, L2 literacy in a broader sense, and other issues related to second language learning and teaching.

If you were ever asked by your students whether they should learn British or American English, you'll be happy to find that we are getting closer together. There are many more Britishisms, but these were in the news.

A speech recognition platform awards a score on how well your pronunciation matches that modeled in the video clip. Has quite a few categories, e.g., business, daily life, news & politics, technology, etc. So you can practice in specific subject areas.

Defines 3 types of bilinguals. Helpful in defining what your students needs might be.

Test/practice conjugating English verbs. You can write in a verb and the program will give you all the forms.

Listen to speakers from all over the world while reading a phonemic transcript of what they say. Looks as if it were developed for researchers, but it might be very useful for advanced learners who are studying pronunciation and accent reduction. Wouldn't be appropriate for beginning learners.

Over 600 audio clips from the British Library Sound Archive collection. Would be useful for hearing how modern dialects actually sound; includes Minority/Ethnic accents.

What are the top ten? This is for native speakers, but has relevance if you are teaching academic writing at the advanced/university level. Though oriented to native English speakers, many of the programs and activities, e.g., critical thinking, collaboration, games & tools, tips & how-to's, are appropriate for or can be adapted to EFL/ESL. Teacher Resources can be explored by grade level, from Kindergarten through 12th grade (i.e., sr. high school).

This is a great place for students to SEE visually how words and expressions relate to each other. A must for the visual learner, but wonderful for everyone. Try an expression like "go out" to see how idioms are related to the original meaning.

"The participants were given an intelligence test in 1947 at the age of 11 and were retested in their early 70s, between 2008 and 2010. Of the participants, 262 said they were able to communicate in at least one language other than English. Of those, 195 learned the second language before the age of 18, while 65 learned the language after this age. Researchers found that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better cognitive abilities in later life, compared to what would be predicted from their performance in the tests at age 11. " However, it might be that people who learn a second language also perform many other brain-activating functions throughout their lives.
