Additionally, participating in debates can develop confidence and public speaking skills." A good practice for critical thinking and listening speaking skills. This article does not give classroom tips for setting up debates, but you might want to have a judging panel, and also help students prepare while focusing on the factual as well as the rhetorical side of debating.

Evolving Technology Gives True Voices to Children Who Cannot Speak - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
"Until recently, devices that help children like Enrique speak used modified adult voices. The effect can be startling to those listening because it doesn't sound like a child's voice. Most existing children's voices sound "like adults on helium," said David Niemeijer, chief executive and lead developer at AssistiveWare, which developed the software Enrique tested. "

BBC NEWS | UK | England | West Yorkshire | Podcast lectures for uni students - 2 views

  • Podcast lectures for uni students A lecturer at a West Yorkshire university has abolished traditional lectures in favour of podcasts. Dr Bill Ashraf, a senior lecturer in microbiology at Bradford University, says the move will free up time for more small group teaching. He told The Times Higher Education Supplement that first year biochemistry students would watch or listen to virtual lectures in their own time. Students will access the podcasts via their MP3 player, phone or computer. Text questions Students will ask questions about lectures via text message, which will be answered in Dr Ashraf's blog. The lecturer has also been putting his appointment times online so students can check if he is available or book a meeting without coming into the university. Dr Ashraf said the move would better suit the needs of distance learners, part-time students and those balancing studies with family and work. He said: "Some lecture classes have 250 students, so I question the effectiveness of a didactic lecture for an hour."

This looks to be a great tool: Simply put in the YouTube, Vimeo, or other video site address, then add the subtitles. You can embed the result anywhere. This would be great for making videos for hearing impaired students who need closed captioning, or for English practice with your students as listening/writing practice. (Thanks to Bee Dieu)

  •
Kaizena is a wonderful tool for giving oral feedback. This may be faster and more explanatory when working with student essays than writing comments. You will probably give more feedback, and perhaps more positive feedback than when writing cyptic notes. Oral commenting also gives students some listening practice. This YouTube tutorial shows how a teacher is using Kaizena with her student papers.

Convert any text to speech with iSpeech - 6 views

  •
You can insert text here and have it read to you in a fairly good electronic voice. This might make a nice listening practice for student writers who want to hear how they sound, or for new adult readers who are just getting an idea of print to sound connections. The upgraded (paid) version of iSpeech has premium voices, but the sound quality is very good in the free version.
