everyhuman: thesis - 1 views

  • Hello, I am James Torio, I live in New York. I wrote the paper for my master's thesis in advertising design for Syracuse University. I have a passion for design, innovation, creativity, strategy, branding, trend-spotting, problem-solving, all things viral and how they relate to building more dynamic relationships between brands and target audiences. The thesis is saved as a PDF, please feel free to download it and share it. Thanks again to everyone who participated in the survey and every along the way who freely gave advice. To give a brief over view of the paper, it was written for people who have a basic understanding of Blogs. I looked at how Blogs have impacted business and communication, how some Blogs create revenue, how some companies are using Blogs, how Blogs greatly boost the spread of information, how Blogs add richness to the media landscape, how Blogs work in the Long Tail, how some companies are tracking the Blogosphere and what the future of Blogging may be.

Preparing Instructors for Quality Online Instruction - 0 views

  • http://www.westga.edu/%7Edistance/ojdla/spring81/yang81.htm Preparing Instructors for Quality Online Instruction Yi Yang Ph.D. Candidate Department of Instructional Systems, Leadership, and Workforce Development Mississippi State University yy47@colled.msstate.edu Linda F. Cornelious, Ph.D. Professor Department of Instructional Systems, Leadership, and Workforce Development Mississippi State University lcornelious@colled.msstate.edu Abstract With a growing number of courses offered online and degrees offered through the Internet, there is a considerable interest in online education, particularly as it relates to the quality of online instruction. The major concerns are centering on the following questions: What will be the new role for instructors in online education? How will students' learning outcomes be assured and improved in online learning environment? How will effective communication and interaction be established with students in the absence of face-to-face instruction? How will instructors motivate students to learn in the online learning environment? This paper will examine new challenges and barriers for online instructors, highlight major themes prevalent in the literature related to “quality control or assurance” in online education, and provide practical strategies for instructors to design and deliver effective online instruction. Recommendations will be made on how to prepare instructors for quality online instruction.

On close reading, part 2 | Granted, and... - 1 views

  •
This is an excellent compendium of how to do "close reading" which in fact means re-reading for various purposes. Teachers can teach how to read on multiple levels--vocabulary, metaphor, main ideas--and how these inter-relate, with an eye to how this can lead to writing a thoughtful, original paper. This blog is well worth following for help with pedagogy and teaching high school and academic learners.

Fostering Student Collaboration With Google Docs - 1 views

  •
This is not about the technical how-to of G-Docs. The teacher instead discusses the pedagogical aspects of how collaboration works, as students write a collaborative essay and discuss it together as they write. The teacher also explains how she does formative assessment as the students write. Using Goggle Docs she can see who contributes and how much.

It also shows you some of the tricky things to remember and also how Google Docs and Google Drive link together." Google has changed a bit, but this video by R. Stannard should be very helpful. Shows how to convert docs from other formats and how to use the desktop G-Drive.

Equity Maps® - Improve collaboration, reflection & engagement- iPad App for S... - 1 views

  •
"Figuring out which students participate in a class discussion-and how often-can be a huge challenge. Equity Maps is an iPad app for keeping track of that. "You start by creating a seating chart that shows where students are sitting for a discussion. When the discussion starts, you just tap each student's icon as that student contributes to the conversation. Equity Maps keeps track of how long each student talks so that when you're done, you can get a summary of how often each class member participated, how many were active participants, and whether there was equal gender distribution among those who actively engaged." Sounds like a good teacher tool. T/h to Jennifer Gonzalez

Teaching Your Students How to Have a Conversation | Edutopia - 2 views

  •
"I was recently in a third grade classroom and was struck by the presence of rules that were posted for how to have a conversation. The poster said, "Each person must contribute to the discussion but take turns talking. Ask each other, 'Would you like to add to my idea?' or 'Can you tell us what you are thinking?' Ask questions so that you understand each other's ideas. Say, 'Can you tell me more about that?' or 'Can you say that in another way?'" "Having visited many middle and high schools, I think these same rules could -- and probably should -- be posted there as well. " How important the rules of conversation are! We all too often expect our students to "get into groups and discuss," but how often are these productive conversations? These tips/strategies are well worth practicing at the beginning of every year/semester, and not just with young learners. These tips are also a nice practice for EFL/ESL students as they prepare to speak with native speakers.

Teacher laureate of the Teaching Channel explains how the Common Core emerged from the state governors' meeting to create common ideas about what should be taught and learned in schools. Explains the types of assessment that are encouraged, e.g., formative assessment, and how the Common Core is not completely the same as a uniform curriculum. A good introduction to the Core whether you are a U.S. teacher, or a teacher in another country interested in developing your own national standards.

Decoding Digital Pedagogy, pt. 1: Beyond the LMS | Digital Pedagogy | HYBRID PEDAGOGY - 0 views

  •
"The invention of the LMS (Learning Management System) was a mistake. And here I'm not going to make the same frustrated argument made numerous times before now that LMSs are limiting structures, that their interface and functionalities control how teachers teach online (although those things are true). The LMS was a mistake because it was premature. In a world that was just waking up to the Internet and the possibility of widely-networked culture, the LMS played to the lowest common denominator, creating a "classroom" that allowed learning -- or something like learning -- to happen behind tabs, in threaded discussions, and through automated quizzes. The LMS was not a creative decision, it was not pushing the capabilities of the Internet, it was settling for the least innovative classroom practice and repositioning that digitally. As a result classes taught within its structure generally land with a dull thud. No matter how creative and inspired the teacher or pedagogue behind the wheel, the LMS is no match for the wideness of the Internet. It was born a relic -- at its launch utterly irrelevant to its environment and its user." Very thought-provoking article on how digital pedagogy really differs from just "teaching online."

Daphne Koller: What we're learning from online education | Video on TED.com - 1 views

  •
A look atMOOCs from the co-founder of Coursera. Shows how video lectures are delivered with spot-check questions and feedback, and the use of peer/self grading. The conversations, home-work assignments, and so on, are all data fodder for an examination of how MOOC learning works. Students were also self-selected into virtual and land-based study groups. Feedback on quizzes and spot-checks also led to the development of "individualized" responses to wrong answers/misconceptions. Demonstrates how tutoring one-on-online is far better than lecture courses. The goal of Coursera is to ignite students creativity through active learning.

Critical Issue: Providing Professional Development for Effective Technology Use - 3 views

  •
"How can schools and districts provide the type of professional development that will promote teachers' effective use of technology in the classroom? How can this professional development inspire teachers to use technology to create new learning opportunities that will have a positive impact on student achievement? Two requirements help ensure the success of professional development for effective technology use. First, the professional development should be an integral part of the school technology plan or overall school-improvement plan. Second, the professional development should contain all the necessary components that research has found to be important. " This blog article goes into some detail on how to create a professional development plan.

Lesson Idea: Think Pair Share - 1 views

  •
A nice example of how to do a Think-Pair-Share in a math context. Students first work individually, then pair up to compare and talk about their answers, and then share within their groups of about 5. Talking about concepts helps students process and learn the concept. The teacher circulates, listening in. Groups report back to the whole class by holding up a small whiteboard/paper with the answer, so that teacher can quickly see how each group (mixed levels of expertise) has done it. She selects one or two groups to explain the answer and how they arrived at it.
