Autumn Leaves and Fall Colors - Why do autumn leaves change color? - 1 views

      Have students write what they found about one leaf and take or draw a picture of the leaf before the color change occurs. Then put all the artifacts in a scrap book for the class library.

    Observing leaves as they change color. The filters are used to transfer the colors of the leaves. Tape off part of the leaf and watch as light makes it change color like they do in the fall.

      Life Science K.3.1 "Observe and draw physical features of common plants and animals." This activity can be adjusted for gifted students by allowing them to label their picture with the appropriate words for a plant. Using words such as "roots" or "xylem" would be excellent! This activity can be used for older grades by having the students compare two different celery stalks - one with water, and one without water. The students can then make a table or chart to compare and contrast the two different celery stalks.

    Students observe a stalk of celery over one to two days. The celery is placed into water (food coloring is added to the water). The students then record their observations about the water moving up the celery stalk. This is a great way for students to understand how plants transport water from their roots to their leaves!

    Indoor Gardening with Kitchen Waste Introduce experiment by talking about the six basic parts of plants: roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit, and seeds.  Grow a garden by using plant scraps that usually get thrown away. Supplies: 2-3 carrot tops, cut about 1 inch from the top, shallow bowl, pebbles (optional), sand, water, 1 fresh pineapple, pot of damp soil.

    Multi-grade project that can you can differentiate according to skill and prior knowledge (experience). Older grade levels can research other possible materials to recycle from the kitchen in other ways.

Students will tae care of their plants and chart the plant's progress and changes. They will also analyze their plant's structures and compare their common structures with other plants while discussing their purpose.
