This activity can be used with gifted students by allowing them to observe another candle burning in a bowl with no water present. The students can then compare and contrast the differences in the candles and the way in which they burn, and make inferences about why they believe the candles are different. This activity can be used with older age groups in the same way. The older students may be able to light their own candles as they work in groups, while still monitoring their progress.

It can also be adjusted by providing specific materials for the younger students, rather than giving them a wide variety of choices for materials.

      This project would also be excellent for creating a sense of community in the classroom as everyone would be working together toward a common goal (acceptance of their project by NASA_.   ELL differentiation:  I would probably find a different project to accommodate ELL's as this project is very intense, and requires a strong command of language (in order to follow instructions.)  It is possible to create a book of picture instructions for the project or give them a smaller, yet still important role in the class for this particular assignment.

It may be an actiity that couldbe done as a whole class activity. Vibrations and how sounds are transmitted and heard is something that students are fascinated by.

      I love this game. There is really no need to come up with new ways to extend this activity, as the students pass each level they get a little more difficult! I think kids will LOVE this activity and not even realize they are learning! This will be good for working on introducing computer skills as well. Be sure to go over how to use the mouse for younger grades and ELL and special need students.

      This game could be used in younger grades (K and 1st) by having the students use a regular deck of cards and finding four numbers of the same kind instead of equivalent numbers. Higher advanced students could use a deck of cards with harder fractions and percentages. They could also create their own decks of cards to play with. Lower ability students could use decks of cards were they have to find two fractions and/or two percentages instead of four different equivalent numbers.

For example, the students could be searching for even numbers or odd numbers, rather than prime or composite numbers.

    Students work in pairs for this game. Each pair has a printed 100 chart. The students designate one color marker for the prime numbers, and another color marker for the composite numbers. Students take turns crossing out a composite number (1 point), circling a prime number (3 points), or passing. The player with the most points when all of the numbers are found, wins!

In the other sense, it can be modified to include more shapes that are more difficult to identify. This activity could also be used in other subject areas, such as science. It could be used to identify different classifications of plants and animals. It could also be used in foreign language. The students could read a vocabulary word in the foreign language, and then have to say the correct vocabulary work in English.

    Children make a game board displaying different shapes they should know (polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, etc.). Each child roles the die and moves that number of spaces. If that player can correctly identify the shape in their space, they roll again. The first one to the end and back wins!

This activity can be used for younger ages by working with only the black cards, and modeling proper mathematical words, such as "greater than" and "less than".

Red cards represent negative numbers, and black cards represent positive numbers. The person with the highest valued card is the winner for that round. The student that accumulates the most cards (when each player is out of cards) is the winner!

      This lesson offers a great chance to work with a writing lesson.  Students can learn how the wording of their questions might affect the answers they receive.  This could then spawn another lesson in critical thinking about how real surveys done by groups might be biased to their preconceived ideas.  Working in groups would allow students of various ability levels and learning styles to all contribute to the group.
