Tweet, Tweet, Retweet : conversational aspects of retweeting on Twitter - 1 views

  •
Danah Boyd Twitter-a microblogging service that enables users to post messages ("tweets") of up to 140 characters-supports a variety of communicative practices; participants use Twitter to converse with individuals, groups, and the public at large, so when conversations emerge, they are often experienced by broader audiences than just the interlocutors. This paper examines the practice of retweeting as a way by which participants can be "in a conversation." While retweeting has become a convention inside Twitter, participants retweet using different styles and for diverse reasons. We highlight how authorship, attribution, and communicative fidelity are negotiated in diverse ways. Using a series of case studies and empirical data, this paper maps out retweeting as a conversational practice. 1.

10 Amazing Ways For Teachers & Tutors To Use Twitter In Education - 0 views

  •
"Twitter like all other social media is a virtual Aladdin's cave. It is a gateway to riches. But just like in the story, this Aladdin's cave is also booby-trapped. Use it right and you will come away with the genie of knowledge ready to do your bidding. Use it wrong and you will be a casualty of wasted time. So, 'rub' it just right. Long back, we had taken a look at how to use Twitter for business. Many of the methods hold true for learning as well."

  • shift from “teaching” to “helping students learn.”
  • ctive learning overthrows the “transfer of information” model of instruction, which casts the student as a dry sponge who passively absorbs facts and ideas from a teacher

  • Websites and laptops have been around for years now, but we haven’t fully thought through how to integrate them with teaching so as to conceive of courses differently

  • the hallways are animated with small clusters of kids sitting outside their classrooms, quietly working on group projects.
  • The project couldn't have been done without the laptops and Internet connection.
  • But the Web is different; it's everyman's encyclopedia. "I gave them specific questions to look up," says MacLean, noting that she had already searched to make sure the answers were there and were understandable and accurate. "They could open their laptops and get it right then, and I would move on to the next activity."
  • When coupled with professional development, the one-to-one laptop program demonstrably improves student learning. But the amount of instruction that teachers receive is also lopsidedlopsided. The state offers webinars and a training staff, but not all schools make use of them.
