Assignment Calendar - 4teachers.org - 0 views

  • Assign-A-Day is a free tool designed to enhance teacher and student communication through an online teacher-managed calendar. Teachers create a calendar for each of their classes and add assignments for the students to view.
  •
Free calendar sharing site which would be helpful in organizing assignments and sharing future classroom plans and activities. I would use this to share upcoming events and news about my school library program particularly with parents and staff.

Moodle - 1 views

This class has been my first experience with Moodle, and I'm loving it! Just a few years back, I would have been the first to argue that an on-line class could NEVER be as effective as a face to face class. I'm eating my words, now! Not only am I finding Moodle to be a very effective "container" for a class, but I'm even thinking that in several ways, the on-line experience is better than the face to face would be. I really want to explore this site further, and learn for myself how to use Moodle to deliver class content in an on-line environment, rather than a face to face environment.
  •
Julie, I have been thinking many of the same things. As a staff, we were introduced to Moodle several years ago. However, with very little instruction on how to do it, it didn't go very far. I too LOVE the idea of using moodle as the 'container." I have often thought that if we did the "dirty work" in the classroom - like the reading, the researching, etc, then the students could go home and do the fun stuff - like commenting in a blog. Would that not seem like homework? Thanks for thinking the same things.

I was excited to see this free Web-conferencing tool. It can be used free to conduct a conference for up to 20 people - collaborative presentations, desktop sharing, chat, interactive audio, etc. Can use in conjunction with Skype. Benefit would be use in reaching students across various geographic locations. This tool could assist some students in feeling more connected to an online class by seeing actual desktops and the interactive audio.

SchoolTube - 0 views

This video-sharing site is for educational videos that students have created to teach something. It is similar to YouTube and TeacherTube. For those students who are interested in YouTube, this provides a safer area with the focus on education - could be very motivating for some. It lets students work on a group video as well as independent videos online with possibilities to comment and discuss. Teachers could use it to view what their actual teaching looks like as a way to increase their effectiveness in the classroom as a professional development activity. Has contests, tutorials, tips, and videos on increasing effectiveness in producing videos.

This tool can help you keep track of what you need to do with a free to-do list and task manager. When you have several projects you're working on at the same time, it allows you to have check-offs to keep track of your progress. It can also be used with students, assigning them specific tasks within group work. It combines Web, email, and other Web utilities and can be accessed from cell phones, too. Has a tutorial to help you learn it.

This presentation tool is very interesting. It certainly is different from the standard powerpoint. I find the movement from one slide to another to be very engaging. I viewed a presentation that a teacher used to introduce herself to her class. I could see using this with my 2nd grade class as a way to introduce myself or to tell them about my 10 favorite books.

  • ordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.

I know that this isn't the newest Web 2.0 tool, but I love it. I can see using this with older students to create a autobiographical image of themselves. Students could also create a Wordle for their favorite poem or a series of quotes. At a conference someone did a wordle for their library mission statement.

Project Based Learning Step by Step Creation Guide - 2 views

  • Learn how to Design your Project. Plan rigorous and relevant standards-focused projects that engage students in authentic learning activities, teach 21st century skills, and demand demonstration of mastery.

This is a site that provides step-by-step guidance on creating project-based learning units. It not only gives the rationale behind PBL as a unit design model, but also guides the user through each step of the creation process. It appears to be very easy to use, and provides information at each step that ensures a quality product. In addition to the very clear steps to take, as well as the 'theory' behind each step, there are numerous examples of completed PBL projects to view. I will use this site myself, as I really like the idea of redesigning portions of my instruction using this model. I will also direct teachers to it when we are discussing teaching strategies and instructional design models that are compatible with how the brain learns. The "briefs" and the literature reviews for each of the Characteristics of Effective Instruction (within the Iowa Core) contain numerous references to project/problem- based learning as an instructional design model that matches the vision of the Iowa Core.
