  • "It's What's on the Inside That Counts!"
  • I am currently running a group for children with a loved one in jail. One of the activities I have facilitated with my group is the kiwi lesson.  The kiwi lesson can be used to address many different topics including stigma, shame, diversity, tolerance, body image, and more.  This lesson is fun and engaging. It worked especially well in the context of this group.

Great lesson to use with a small group. Author uses for kids with parent in jail.
  •
I am always looking for ways to engage my students about guidance topics. I am looking for "real" conversation with them as opposed to hearing the answers they think you want to hear. The kiwi lesson described is one of those lessons that will provoke responses that are real.

WatchKnow - Free Educational Videos for K-12 Students - 1 views

  • We believe that everyone should have the same opportunity to learn. The best way to make this possible, we believe, is to organize into one, super directory the hundreds of thousands of good videos currently available on the Internet. To make this a reality, we invite teachers, instructors and educators to suggest videos for inclusion into our directory, and then to review, approve, and assign those videos into appropriate categories using a wiki framework and philosophy. The videos are the highest quality found on the World Wide Web, cover all major educational topics from elementary to secondary schools (or age range 1 – 18), and are Kid Safe!

This is a great site that provides videos for educators to use in their classrooms. It's organized in a wiki framework so that all types of educators can collaborate in order to provide great tools for students. I encourage my teachers to search for videos they can use in their classroom as well as to share videos they have created.
  •
This web site helps teachers and students find valuable, educational videos from You Tube, Teacher Tube, and other places online. There is an advisory committee that chooses which videos are appropriate for the site and each video is tagged with an age appropriate label. You can search by subject area or a keyword search.

I like to use photos with various guidance and counseling lessons. This site has some great animal pictures. I had a subscription for the magazine at one time and like it. The benefit for me now is the photos are easily accessible and I can choose which ones would work best at a particular time.

This site is a great resource for teachers and students. It is easy to navigate and new concepts are always linked to review as you go along. It has been great for differentiating in the classroom.
  •
Helping you use the internet effectively. Tutorials, assessments, learning and practice assignments for k-12 covering many curriculum areas using the internet. This site has helped me in differentiating my instruction to the many ability levels in my class. Students can start at the very beginning or start with a more advanced assignment. A lot like Atomic Learning, it uses a show, tell, and try it method of instruction along with links to go back and review a concept if you forget.

Try truncating the url to see if there are clues about authorship or links to an author on other pages--remove the end of the address back to a significant break ( / ) or the root of the site. If the site provides links to 'about us' or 'contact us,' check there for author information. Web Quest Maker - 1 views

  • A Web Quest is a method used to engage students in inquiry based learning. A web quest is meant to guide students through a process of inquiry through a set of assigned tasks that lead them to a conclusion, or that results in a product.
  •
Web quest generator allows teachers to create their own webquest tailored a specific lesson. I often use pre-made quests, but see a value in making my own to complement a lesson and emphasize components of that lesson that I feel my students need most.

Moodle - 1 views

This class has been my first experience with Moodle, and I'm loving it! Just a few years back, I would have been the first to argue that an on-line class could NEVER be as effective as a face to face class. I'm eating my words, now! Not only am I finding Moodle to be a very effective "container" for a class, but I'm even thinking that in several ways, the on-line experience is better than the face to face would be. I really want to explore this site further, and learn for myself how to use Moodle to deliver class content in an on-line environment, rather than a face to face environment.
  •
Julie, I have been thinking many of the same things. As a staff, we were introduced to Moodle several years ago. However, with very little instruction on how to do it, it didn't go very far. I too LOVE the idea of using moodle as the 'container." I have often thought that if we did the "dirty work" in the classroom - like the reading, the researching, etc, then the students could go home and do the fun stuff - like commenting in a blog. Would that not seem like homework? Thanks for thinking the same things.

This resource is updated constantly. Teachers can send in flipcharts to be used on Promethean boards. It isn't a text, more of a tool for finding resources. I wanted to share it because it is SO helpful if your room is equipped with Promethean boards.

Seems like a neat tool to use in a classroom. Student could create their presentations and use their own voices to narrate. Since it is online with many ways to add comments, it could be used anywhere, not have to be done in school. I'm not sure about the K-12 edu voice. It seems like a nice thing to have, but it does have a subscription cost.
  •
Create multi-media slide shows that contain images, documents, and video. Comments can be left on each slide in 5 different ways. his could be use with students to create all kinds of presentations and ways to display their learning. They could video tape a science lab and then use this to narrate their learning as they go through the video. Teachers could use this tool to video their classroom and then collaborate with one another using this tool. The collaboration could take place with teacher from different districts, states, even countries.
