School Counselor Blog - 1 views

  • "It's What's on the Inside That Counts!"
  • I am currently running a group for children with a loved one in jail. One of the activities I have facilitated with my group is the kiwi lesson.  The kiwi lesson can be used to address many different topics including stigma, shame, diversity, tolerance, body image, and more.  This lesson is fun and engaging. It worked especially well in the context of this group.

Great lesson to use with a small group. Author uses for kids with parent in jail.
  •
I am always looking for ways to engage my students about guidance topics. I am looking for "real" conversation with them as opposed to hearing the answers they think you want to hear. The kiwi lesson described is one of those lessons that will provoke responses that are real.

Web Quest Maker - 1 views

  • A Web Quest is a method used to engage students in inquiry based learning. A web quest is meant to guide students through a process of inquiry through a set of assigned tasks that lead them to a conclusion, or that results in a product.
  •
Web quest generator allows teachers to create their own webquest tailored a specific lesson. I often use pre-made quests, but see a value in making my own to complement a lesson and emphasize components of that lesson that I feel my students need most.

Check out the lessons about note duration and trainers for notes. Could be very useful with upper elementary and middle level students.
  • A downloadable offline edition is also available.
  •
Has some very good lessons on note duration, meters in music, and drills under "trainer" to help students learn notes.
  •
This is a great tool to use with music students of all ages. There are many written trainers (notes, guitar, piano, scales, etc.) and ear trainers (scales, intervals, triads, chords). I use it in class with my high school music theory students (particularly for ear training), and they can access it anywhere to practice.

I like to use photos with various guidance and counseling lessons. This site has some great animal pictures. I had a subscription for the magazine at one time and like it. The benefit for me now is the photos are easily accessible and I can choose which ones would work best at a particular time.

It would be wrong of me if I did not include a history website.  This site provides up to 200 videos about the American Experience.  You can view the videos by time periods and there are lesson plans that can accompany the videos.  This is a great way to supplement learning and make it come to life.

Presentations - 0 views

  • "PowerPoint is a high-powered software tool used for presenting information in a dynamic slide show format. Text, charts, graphs, sound effects and video are just some of the elements PowerPoint can incorporate into your presentations with ease. Whether it's a classroom lesson, a parents' group meeting, a teachers' seminar or an unattended kiosk at the Science Fair - PowerPoint shows you how to make a powerful impression on your audience."
  • Teachers can use presentation software to create and organize effective presentations for small groups, entire classes, and web-based viewing. PowerPoint presentations may contain graphics, digital photos, animations and sound.
  • Students may use presentation software to create presentations that demonstrate what they have learned in a given subject area or to showcase the findings of a research assignment. Presentations are also ideal for capturing the learning process over a period of time. Further, if students can capture the steps of their learning through digital photography, these types of images can be used in a slide show as well.
  •
PowerPoint I think students should know how to create a PowerPoint presentation by the time they leave middle school.

  •
Using the diigo tool is a way to organize sites such as this one to be used in technology class. The 4th graders learn the states and capitals during social studies, and we can do activities during computer class that go along with this subject.
