Nice link and clear overview! I like the point raised about 1000 man in space, even when including automation (as far as they could envision at the time). Now that is a future of the space industry and permanent habitation of near-earth orbits! In fact, I can envision just two reasons maybe, power and the hotel industry
Vitamin B3 might have been made in space, delivered to Earth by meteorites -- ScienceDaily - 0 views
-
Ancient Earth might have had an extraterrestrial supply of vitamin B3 delivered by carbon-rich meteorites, according to a new analysis. The result supports a theory that the origin of life may have been assisted by a supply of key molecules created in space and brought to Earth by comet and meteor impacts.

CliSAP: Mr. Held, several hundred researchers worked for several years on preparing the recently published third part of the Assessment Report, without pay and on top of their normal duties. The result was a work over two thousand pages long. Was it worth it? An overview of the uncertainties when it comes to estimating investments in low carbon. Maybe there is room for computational management projects in there?

what seems to be an impressively detailed space game

> The games we write are always games with a scientific purpose (not training not educational) I'd say investigating how to get the crowd may be an important part of "science of crowdsourcing". So, an obvious example would be comparing how many participants the original ACT space mission game attracted versus a variant implemented in Kerbal and why. Easily made and easily publishable I think. But that's just an obvious example I can give on the spot. I think there is more potential than that, so would not dismiss the idea so definitively. But then, correct me if I'm wrong, social sciences are still not represented in the ACT... Perhaps an idea to revive during the upcoming retreat? ;-)

Concordia calling #ESA - 4 views

Are you a team player who is unafraid of long isolation? Do you have a medical degree and a healthy love of extremes? ESA is offering the chance of a lifetime to run space experiments in one of the world's most isolated places: Concordia research station in Antarctica.
-
One engineer YGT has already reserved his position to go there for maintaining infrastructure, the coming austral winter. Apparent science contribution: low, experience of a lifetime : affirmative!

"team player who is unafraid of long isolation" LOL
ISEE-3 Reboot Project - Recovering an satellite from deep space by crowdsourcing @Spac... - 3 views

"A band of space hackers and engineers are trying to do something never done before - recover a 36 year old NASA spacecraft from the grips of deep space and time. With old NASA documents and Rockethub crowdfunding, a team led by Dennis Wingo and Keith Cowing is attempting to steer ISEE-3, later rechristened ICE, the International Cometary Explorer, back into an Earth orbit and return it to scientific operations. Dennis says, 'ISEE-3 can become a great teaching tool for future engineers and scientists helping with design and travel to Mars'. Only 40 days remain before the spacecraft will be out of range for recovery. A radio telescope is available, propulsion designs are in hand and the team is hoping for public support to provide the small amount needed to accomplish a very unique milestone in space exploration
New Quantum Theory to explain flow of time - 2 views
-
Basically quantum entanglement, or more accurately the dispersal and expansion of mixed quantum states, results in an apparent flow of time. Quantum information leaks out and the result is the move from a pure state (hot coffee) to a mixed state (cooled down) in which equilibrium is reached. Theoretically it is possible to get back to a pure state (coffee spontaneously heating up) but this statistical unlikelihood gives the appereance of irreversibility and hence a flow o time. I think an interesting question is then: how much useful work can you extract from this system? (http://arxiv.org/abs/1302.2811) It should for macroscopic thermodynamic systems lead to the Carnot cycle, but on smaller scales it might be possible to formulate a more general expression. Anybody interested to look into it? Anna, Jo? :)
-
What you propose is called Maxwell's demon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxwell%27s_demon Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) thermodynamics is VERY robust. I guess if you really only want to harness AND USE the energy in a microscopic system you might have some chance of beating Carnot. But any way of transferring harvested energy to a macroscopic system seems to be limited by it (AFAIK).

Can You Slow Down a Day Using Angular Momentum? - 4 views
-
"Could you do this? Could a spinning human slow down the Earth? Theoretically, yes." Let's all put our ice skates on and spin to enjoy a longer daytime !
-
Actually the length of a day fluctuates naturally. Some effects are periodic (e.g. due to seasons) while others accumulate to a general lengthening of the day (like the influence of tides): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluctuations_in_the_length_of_day

Is it not more efficient to just all start running eastward? We could have a new "Jump Day" frenzy :)

True Marek :) The article does quote a Journal Paper though ..... published in zootaxa: a staggering 0.9 impact factor journal!! And watching the video you immediately understand why :)

I of course watched the video and have trouble sleeping since.
