kCELTER's - we can use this to frame our conversation about WHY use Twitter. Nice and simple post to get started. How do you actually do it? I'm going to leave behind the pedagogy (mostly) in this post, and instead offer some practical advice for teaching with Twitter. I'll cover six aspects of Twitter integration where it pays to plan ahead of time (i.e. sometime last week): organization, access, frequency, substance, archiving, and assessment. I'll deal with of each of these areas in turn, but before I do, and if you're new to Twitter, I want to urge you to read Ryan Cordell's comprehensive ProfHacker primer on Twitter. Ryan addresses many common questions about Twitter, and his guide is perfect for sharing with colleagues-and students-before you move into the nuts-and-bolts aspects of teaching with Twitter.

We welcome you to our wiki and blog for supporting iPod & iPad devices in education. Although our focus is K-12, many of the techniques should work for you at any level and with any number of devices. On the wiki side of this site are the deployment and management articles, and on the blog side, you will find the classroom activities (written primarily by teachers) where iPods are supporting achievement improvement for our students. We are posting as many help and how-to articles here as we can and as quickly as we can so you can continue to be successful using iPod devices in your classroom. Please let us know if there are more or different things that you would like to have included here.

Students still want face-to-face contact with staff, but more use of the kind of technologies they have grown up with, though they need to be persuaded to use them to study. They also need to learn how to critically evaluate online sources, while academics need more help in using the technologies.

We have already covered why Diigo, a web bookmarking and annotation service, is a powerful tool for managing bookmarks, but why stop there?  Diigo can be a very useful tool for helping you to write a college essay or research paper. Since the Internet is a tool that most students use to do research, and since most research papers are based on quotes used from various sources, Diigo provides a way to not only bookmark your sources, but also to manage and access your quotes, notes, and analysis.

I know that we're familiar with most of this, but I don't think it hurts to have a resource that we can pass along to others in this way.

SweetSearch came about as the byproduct of making findingDulcinea, an aggregator that terms itself the "Librarian of the Internet." It's a database of about 35,000 web sites vetted by researchers, librarians, and teachers, with priority given to spots like the Library of Congress, Smithsonian, and other public and academic sources. It sweeps away the pseudo-science, forums, and sites that read like paraphrased summaries.

I've been making podcasts for many years and, at one point, was one of about 200 podcasters on the planet (back in the day).  Making a podcast using, say, Audacity, never seemed very difficult, but as my carpenter is fond of saying: "It's easy...if you know how to do it."  But since I went MAC this summer, GarageBand has been my great discovery and 14 and 15 year olders have become my new consultants (seriously).  With GB you can not only make podcasts easily, but you can make real, real cool podcasts which sound as good as (sometimes even better) than on-air radio programs.  I just posted my first podcast using GB about a week ago and already I'm chopping at the bit to re-do the production now that I have another week of GB experience under my belt.

Emory released a suite of mobile applications last Monday that allows students, faculty, staff and visitors on the Oxford and Atlanta campuses to access information about the University via smartphones. Explore the origins of sampling culture in hip-hop music, copyright law, creativity, and technological change through curriculum and supporting film modules from the dynamic documentary Copyright Criminals. The film explores how hip-hop rose from the streets of New York to become a multibillion-dollar industry, and what happened when record company lawyers got involved and everything changed. Students will develop not only a deeper historical understanding of "remix" culture, but also contemplate where it is headed. While still in beta, the site (which is a partnership between Google and an organization called We Are What We Do) has interesting potential for research in the classroom and could be used as a model for a community-action project for students.
