Distribution and Habitat Preferences of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops adun... - 0 views

    Assessments of species distributions are crucial for informing conservation and management action. In this study, we used ensemble modelling to explain the distribution of Near Threatened Indo-Pacific (IP) bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in coastal waters at the North West Cape (NWC), Western Australia (WA), an area encompassing a marine protected area (MPA) and adjacent unprotected coastal waters. Analyses used dolphin sighting data collected during boat-based surveys conducted from 2013 to 2015 and 2018 to 2019. Overall, the distribution of IP bottlenose dolphins was best explained by distance to coast (up to 2,000 m) and distance to boat ramp (up to 7,000 m). Areas of high probability of occurrence for dolphins extended from the tip and down the eastern side of the NWC and overlapped with designated sanctuary zones as well as waters beyond the boundaries of the Ningaloo Marine Park (NMP). Distribution and habitat preferences varied slightly with season. In autumn, dolphin distribution was best explained by distance to coast and water depth with a higher likelihood of observing dolphins 1,000-2,000 m from the coast and in water depths of 7-10 m deep. During winter months, distance to coast (1,000-2,000 m) and sea surface temperature (SST) (21.5-23.5°C) were the most important explanatory variables, with presence in coastal lagoons to the west of the NWC more likely than other seasons. During spring, areas of moderate to high probability of dolphin occurrence were mainly located outside the NMP, with marine park zone (outside the NMP and Sanctuary zones within the NMP, the two zones with the highest probability of IP bottlenose dolphin occurrence) and water depth (waters 7-13 m deep) best explaining dolphin distribution. This study highlights the importance of inshore areas of the NWC for IP bottlenose dolphins and the potential vulnerability of this species to increasing and cumulative anthropogenic stressors associated with these areas. Coastal Landform Constrains Dispersal in Mangroves - @FrontMarineSci - 0 views

    Mangrove forests are dynamic ecosystems found along low-lying coastal plains along tropical, subtropical, and some warm-temperate coasts, predominantly on tidal flats fringing deltas, estuaries, bays, and oceanic atolls. These landforms present varied hydrodynamic and geomorphological settings for mangroves to persist and could influence the extent of within-site propagule transport and subsequent local regeneration. In this study, we examined how different landform characteristics may influence local genetic diversity, kinship, and neighborhood structure of mangrove populations. To do so, we considered independent populations of Avicennia marina, one of the most abundant and widespread mangrove species, located in estuarine and coastal bay environments spread across the Western Indian Ocean region. A transect approach was considered to estimate kinship-based fine-scale spatial genetic structure using 15 polymorphic microsatellite markers in 475 adult A. marina trees from 14 populations. Elevated kinship values and significant fine-scale structure up to 30, 60, or 90 m distances were detected in sheltered systems void of river discharge, suggesting a setting suitable for very local propagule retention and establishment within a neighborhood. Slopes of a linear regression over restricted distance within 150 m were significantly declining in each sheltered transect. Contrastingly, such a spatial structure has not been detected for A. marina transects bordering rivers in the estuarine systems considered, or alongside partially sheltered creeks, suggesting that recruitment here is governed by unrelated carried-away mixed-origin propagules. South African populations showed strong inbreeding levels. Recreational Fishing Impacts in an Offshore and Deep-Water Marine Park: Examining Patte... - 0 views

    No-take marine reserves are often located in remote locations far away from human activity, limiting perceived impact on extractive users but also reducing their use for investigating impacts of fishing. This study aimed to establish a benchmark in the distribution of fished species across the Ningaloo Marine Park - Commonwealth (NMP-Commonwealth), and adjacent comparable habitats within the Ningaloo Marine Park - State (NMP-State), in Western Australia to test if there was evidence of an effect of recreational fishing, as no commercial fishing is allowed within either marine park. We also examined whether the remote location of the newly established (2018) No-take Zone (NTZ), in NMP-Commonwealth, limits its use for studying the effects of fishing. Throughout the NMP-Commonwealth and NMP-State, where recreational fishing is permitted, we expected the abundance of recreationally fished fish species to increase with increasing distance to the nearest boat ramp, as a proxy of recreational fishing effort. Conversely, we did not expect the abundance of non-fished species and overall species richness to vary in response to the proxy for human activity. Distance to the nearest boat ramp was found to be a strong predictor of fished species abundance, indicating that the effect of recreational fishing can be detected across the NMP-Commonwealth. The effect of the NTZ on fished species abundance was weakly positive, but this difference across the NTZ is expected to increase over time. Habitat composition predictors were only found to influence species richness and non-fished species abundance. This study suggests a clear footprint of recreational fishing across the NMP-Commonwealth and as a result the new NTZ, despite its remote location, can act as a control in future studies of recreational fishing effects.

Cyclone Impacts on Coral Reef Communities in Southwest Madagascar - @FrontMarineSci - 0 views

    Tropical cyclones can cause severe destruction of coral reefs with ecological consequences for reef fish communities. Ocean warming is predicted to shorten the return interval for strong tropical cyclones. Understanding the consequences of cyclone impacts on coral reefs is critical to inform local-scale management to support reef resilience and the livelihood security of small-scale fishing communities. Here, we present the first analysis of a tropical cyclone disturbance on coral reefs in Madagascar. We investigate the impact of Cyclone Haruna (category 3 Saffir-Simpson scale) in February 2013 on coral communities, both adults and recruits, and explore the relationship between the severity of cyclone impact with cyclone parameters (wind speed, duration of storm impact and distance from cyclone track) and environmental variables (reef type and reef depth). We use survey data collected as part of a long-term citizen science monitoring programme at 21 coral reef sites between 2012 and 2015 in the Velondriake Locally Managed Marine Area along Madagascar's southwest coast. Coral cover declined at 19 sites, however damage was spatially heterogeneous ranging from a decrease in coral cover of 1.4% to 45.8%. We found the severity of cyclone damage related to: distance from the cyclone track, duration of cyclone impact and reef depth. The taxonomic and morphological composition of coral communities was significantly different after the cyclone. Notably, there was a decrease in the dominance of branching morphologies, and an increase in the relative abundance of encrusting and massive morphologies. Two years after Cyclone Haruna, mean coral cover had increased and the density of coral recruits increased to above pre-cyclone levels indicating the potential recovery of coral populations. However, recovery to pre-disturbance community composition will likely be hindered by the increasing occurrence of acute and chronic disturbance events.

    Adult male sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are long distance runners of the marine realm, feeding in high latitudes and mating in tropical and subtropical waters where stable social groups of females and immatures live. Several areas of uncertainty still limit our understanding of their social and breeding behavior, in particular concerning the potential existence of geographical and/or social fidelities. In this study, using underwater observation and sloughed-skin sampling, we looked for male social fidelity to a specific matrilineal sperm whale group near Mauritius. In addition, we captured a wider picture of kin relationships and genetic diversity of male sperm whales in the Indian Ocean thanks to biopsies of eight individuals taken in a feeding ground near the Kerguelen and Crozet Archipelagos (Southern Indian Ocean). Twenty-six adult male sperm whales were identified when socializing with adult females and immatures off Mauritius. Sloughed-skin samples were taken from thirteen of them for genetic analysis. Long-term underwater observation recorded several noteworthy social interactions between adult males and adult females and/or immatures. We identified seven possible male recaptures over different years (three by direct observation, and four at the gametic level), which supports a certain level of male social fidelity. Two probable first- and thirty second-degree kin relationships were highlighted between members of the social unit and adult males, confirming that some of the adult males observed in Mauritian waters are reproductive. Male social philopatry to their natal group can be excluded, as none of the males sampled shared the haplotype characteristic of the matrilineal social group. Mitochondrial DNA control region haplotype and nucleotide diversities calculated over the 21 total male sperm whales sampled were similar to values found by others in the Indian Ocean.     Whale sharks off the western coast of India have suffered high levels of fishing pressure in the past, and today continue to be caught in small-scale fisheries as by-catch. Additionally, coastlines in this region host very large and growing human populations that are undergoing rapid development. This exacerbates ongoing anthropogenic threats to this species such as pollution, habitat loss, and ship traffic. For these reasons, there is an urgent need for data on movement patterns of whale sharks in this region of the Indian Ocean. Here, we address this issue by providing the first data on the horizontal movements of whale sharks tagged in the northern Arabian Sea off the western coast of the Indian state of Gujarat. From 2011 to 2017, eight individuals, ranging from 5.4 to 8 m were tagged and monitored using satellite telemetry. Tag retention varied from 1 to 137 days, with the sharks traveling distances of 34 - ∼2,230 km. Six of the eight individuals remained close to their tagging locations, although two sharks displayed wide ranging movements into the Arabian Sea, following frontal zones between water masses of different sea surface temperatures. We explore the relationship between the movement patterns of these whale sharks and the physical and biological processes of the region.

    According to the latest report on the state of World Food and Agriculture Organization fisheries and aquaculture (SOFIA, 2022), skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) are among the five most caught finfish species of the world, with 2,827 and 1,569 thousand tons in 2020, respectively. The tropical purse seiners deploy large nets around tuna schools in the tropical waters of the world. This method targets three main tuna species, skipjack, yellowfin and bigeye (Thunnus obesus) tunas, which are mainly used for canning or frozen markets. This important fishery provides employment opportunities for many people in developing countries. Landings for the European long-distance fishery targeting tuna and tuna-like fishes from Indian Ocean, amounted to 303,638 tons valued at EUR 423.7 million (Prellezo et al., 2022), where the Spanish fleet of purse seiners targeting tropical tuna is the most important. The Spanish tropical purse seine fleet fishing in the Indian Ocean accounts for 26% of the skipjack and yellowfin tunas caught from Indian Ocean, which represent approximately 3% of worldwide catch for both species.

    Long-distance drifting of seaweeds driven by ocean currents is an ideal model for exploring population-level genetic connectivity and phylogeographic structure. In the Indo-Pacific convergence region, we integrated phylogeographic and ocean current data and Lagrangian particle simulations to explore how the ocean currents contributed to the biogeographical patterns and population genetic connectivity of Sargassum polycystum. The oceanographic transport and direction of gene flow was in line with contemporary ocean currents. The S. polycystum geographical dispersal from glacial refugia homogenized the footprint of genetic divergence. The multidisciplinary intersection provides insights into the evolutionary history and biogeographic conservation of tropical seaweeds in the Indo-Pacific convergence region.

    Coral reefs are biodiversity hotspots, places of high endemicity and provide essential services to billions of people globally. With increasing threats to these reefs worldwide, there is a need to implement faster, more efficient ways to monitor spatial and temporal patterns of biodiversity. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding offers a promising tool to address this issue, as it has revolutionized our ability to monitor biodiversity from complex environmental samples such as seawater. However, the capacity for eDNA to resolve fine scale shifts in community composition across habitats in seascapes is yet to be fully explored. Here, we applied eDNA metabarcoding using the rRNA 18S Universal eukaryote assay to explore differences in community profiles between samples collected from the lagoon and reef slope habitats across more than 170 km of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area in Western Australia. We recovered 2061 amplicon sequence variants that comprised of 401 taxa spanning 14 different metazoan phyla such as cnidarians, poriferans, molluscs, algae, worms, and echinoderms. Our results revealed strong clustering of samples by habitat type across the length of the reef. Community dissimilarity (beta diversity) between samples collected from the reef slope and lagoon habitats was high and was driven largely by a strong rate of spatial turnover, indicating a distinct set of taxa representing each reef zone community. We also detected a strong pattern of isolation by distance within our slope samples, suggesting that communities are spatially stratified across the length of the reef. Despite high connectivity due to regular flushing of the lagoon environment, our results demonstrate that metabarcoding of seawater eDNA from different habitats can resolve fine scale community structure. By generating multi-trophic biodiversity data, our study also provided baseline data for Ningaloo from which future changes can be assessed.

Characterization of Geochemistry in Hydrothermal Sediments From the Newly Discovered On... - 0 views

    The recently discovered Onnuri hydrothermal vent field (OVF) is a typical off-axis ultramafic-hosted vent system, located on the summit of the dome-like ocean core complex (OCC) at a distance of ∼12 km from the ridge axis along the middle region of the Central Indian Ridge (CIR). The plume chemistry with high methane anomaly was consistent with the precursor of hydrothermal activity; however, the fundamental characteristic of the OVF system, such as the hydrothermal circulation process and source of heat, remains poorly understood. Here, we focus on the geochemical features of surface sediments and minerals collected at and around the OVF region in order to better understand this venting system. The results reveal that the OVF sediments are typified by remarkably high concentrations of Fe, Si, Ba, Cu, and Zn, derived from hydrothermal fluid and S and Mg from seawater; depleted C-S isotope compositions; and abundant hydrothermally precipitated minerals (i.e., Fe-Mn hydroxides, sulfide and sulfate minerals, and opal silica). Notably, the occurrence of pure talc and barite bears witness to strong hydrothermal activity in the OVF, and their sulfur and strontium isotope geochemistry agree with extensive mixing of the unmodified seawater with high-temperature fluid derived from the gabbroic rock within the ultramafic-dominated ridge segment. The findings reveal that the OVF is a representative example of an off-axis, high-temperature hydrothermal circulation system, possibly driven by the exothermic serpentinization of exposed peridotites. Given the widespread distribution of OCC with detachment faults, furthermore, the OVF may be the most common type of hydrothermal activity in the CIR, although the paucity of data precludes generalizing this result. This study provides important information contributing to our understanding of the ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal vent system with a non-magmatic heat source along mid-ocean ridges.
