PieSpy - Inferring and Visualizing Social Network on IRC - 0 views

  •
nferring and Visualizing Social Networks on IRC screenshot PieSpy is an IRC bot that monitors a set of IRC channels. It uses a simple set of heuristics to infer relationships between pairs of users. These inferrences allow PieSpy to build a mathematical model of a social network for any channel. These social networks can be drawn and used to create animations of evolving social networks. PieSpy has also been used to visualize Shakespearean social networks. This page got slashdotted on 11 March 2004, with the site getting 250,000 hits per hour. Thanks to Notnet for making sure it all stayed alive! PieSpy was presented at the Information Visualization conference (IV'04) in July 2004. Read the full paper online. It has also appeared in Computer Weekly, c't magazine, and I was interviewed live on BBC Radio Kent.

There are heaps of other sites all around the web where you can put your short stories, anything from DeviantART to Yahoo! Geocities, so when the magical unicorns went to create Ego, they knew exactly what they wanted. Ego was born to be a tool that specializes in creative writing of all sorts, one not distracted by social functionality. With lovely typography and beautiful designs, writers and roleplayers can focus on their writing and have results like this page, without any branding or distractions to the reader. Owning Your Content With some websites you need to agree to Terms of Service pages far too long to read, selling your soul, and your creations, to the website operators. Not so with Ego. There are no Terms of Service beyond three simple rules: No Pornography, No Illigal Material, and the unicorns may remove content they feel inappropriate. If your content is removed, this simply means that your account will be restricted from publishing through the ego website, and to host your content you'll need to use the Download Zip functionality to get the html files, and upload them to a hosting service. You will continue to have access to your content regardless of these rules, unless we're legally required to remove it, or we become aware of attempts on your part to disrupt access for other users. Interoperability When you publish through Ego, not only is the static html file available, but also a 'JSON' based computer source code file, which can be read in the vast majority of common programming languages, and manipulated with ease. This means that if you provide a link to one of your pages on another website, they can potentially do all sorts of interesting things with the data, like import it in to their own competing publishing systems, add it to a search engine, or combine it with other useful information like maps. Great view about Collective Unconscious in the 2.0 world
  • “Never before have we had such amazing ways of delivering information through television, books, photographs, graphics, computers, video, multimedia, and the internet. Yet so many children are bored and have become less and less motivated to learn about and understand the world around them,”
  • Jung’s collective unconscious is the dreamtime of Homo sapiens. ‘Collective Unconscious 2.0’ is the dreamtime of late-era hypercapitalism. The energies that inform Jung’s collective unconscious are for the most part biological: instinctual drives of fear, hunger and sex (along with the drive for psychic wholeness). The energies that inform the ‘Collective Unconscious 2.0’ are more abstract, related to the movement of electronic capital and the maximization of profit to shareholders.

  • “These modules seek to penetrate, but in a passing way. A second of your attention is all they ask. Nothing is firing that rends or cuts. It’s a massage, really, if you just go with it. And why not? Some of the most talented people on the planet have devoted their lives to creating this psychic sauna, just for you.” Ersatz environments and colourful advertisements have been with us since the fifties, de Zengotita adds, but the multimedia blitz we experience now represents a whole new level of persuasion. “Saying that it’s just more of what we had before is like saying a hurricane is just more breeze.”
  • Today’s mass dream, split from the organic foundation of the world and cobbled together from shards of television shows, newspaper and magazine articles, advertisements, films, ad jingles, ringtones – the whole mad fantasy of what’s hip, what’s not, who’s in, who’s out and the international villain du jour – is the raw stuff of the ‘Collective Unconscious 2.0’.
  • Mainstream media culture currently has all the signs of full-blown psychosis. This is analogous to Jung’s shadow. Confronting the shadow is unpleasant on a personal level, but healing cannot be effected without being confronted with the truth – and as folk wisdom has it, the truth hurts. What is positive about this process is that we’re being forced to confront the very worst in the imaginal output of our great, untethered, free market economy.
  • We are, ultimately, the stories we tell each other of our past, present and future. We become what we seek. It’s up to us to rule the imagination or leave it in the hands of a select few to shape the future of the mass dream. As Buckminster Fuller once said, “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
