This article discusses the fact that athletes do worse in school than non-athletes. The gap between the grades of recruited athletes and non-athletes continues to grow. The grades of male recruited athletes continue to drop. This raises the question of the effect of athletics on education. Are they getting enough attention or too much?

Web. 19 Nov. 2010 This article focuses on the NCAA progress rates over a period of years. It was clear that the progress of basketball and football players were relatively low. Also, the impact of the standards of college sports is discussed. Almost half of top level college football and basketball players are not expected to graduate. This staggering statistic raises many questions about the treatment of college athletes.

A number of studies have reported positive associations between music experience and increased abilities in non-musical (e.g., linguistic, mathematical, and spatial) domains in children. These transfer effects continue to be probed using a variety of experimental designs. The major aim of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effects of a scaffolded music instruction program on the vocabulary and verbal sequencing skills of two cohorts of second-grade students. One group (n = 46) studied piano formally for a period of three consecutive years as part of a comprehensive instructional intervention program.

This article is about how girls in 5th grade understand math the same way as boys but they have more emotions about it. Girls have less enjoyment and pride compared to boys. They have more anxiety, hopelessness and shame when it comes to math. The article goes into why this is true and there are charts.

American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, 6/1/2006, Vol. 63 Issue 11, p1048-1055, 8p A study done where patients who had a varied reading level below the sixth grade level, were asked to interpret the warning labels for the pill pescriptions. What they found out was that the correctness of the group, was from 0% to 78.7% on the warning labels. As expected there was a consistancy of the lower Literacy rates having a lower correctness rate as well.

Over a ten year span the Chicago city schools have received new principles, teachers, and curriculum. Preparing students for college starts in grade school, in preparing for high school. There have been multiple reconstructions including a yearly test and weekly lessons in preparation for that test. This helps students prepare for the riger and high level of education for the students' future.\n

It gives percentages of how many had to repeat a grade along with how many had learning disibilities. The article also explains the socail problems they had as children leading to them not having a very close friends through school. Also it reports how their medical problems let to them physically having problems that interfied with their learning (i.e. tumors).

This article is a study on the difference between kids with ADHD, kids with working memory difficulties and "normal" kids without ADHD or memory difficulties and their academic attainment ability. The children tested were between about eight and ten years old. They were given standardized tests to grade their literacy and numeracy. As expected, the children with ADHD and working memory difficulties had worse scores than the "normal" children. However, the results from the test allow teachers to recognize the students at risk and get them help.

Colleges have better organization skills, thus, the better outcome in grades. The effects of tutoring are positive but also stronger than individual attention from a teacher. With a tutor, it's more personal and you are not just a student to the teacher.

This shows statistics between fourth, seventh, tenth, and college students on their reading and writing skills. It shows that peer tutoring can improve everyone's overall grades and gpa's. The two tests between what students were tutored and who weren't show the difference. The effects were clearcut.

Even some students are getting tutored for regular classes just to get a good grade. These students are trying to get ahead of everyone, to help them succeed in their field. Peer tutoring impacts those who want a good gpa, it gives them an extra edge to do better than others.

This article says that tutoring is an effective learning method for college students. This proves that students who are tutored get better grades in all subjects, especially english. Reading is a part of every subject and by exercising it the most, students become more literate.

They call these students "special admits" which include athletes. 70% of scholarship athletes at UCLA were accepted as special admits. On the other hand, only 3% of the regular student body was accepted as special admits. The article stresses the point that the athletic department should not be included in the admissions process.

It goes into how this would affect students in positive and negative ways. Would introducing students to techonology at a younger age benefit them more in the future? This is the question that people ask themselves to determine the most beneficial style of learning, and how to improve the learning techniques of children.

The article uses John, a freshman at a four year university, as an example for the transition from high school to college. John was identified to a have a learning disability in second grade. He recieved services throughout his academic career. The article addresses problems and transitional issues that may come about during the first year of college. The article ultimately shows that those students who are self-determined are more likely to seek out help during their academic transition.

The article examines how many times students asked or recieved help. The most important factor of help seemed to people parental encouragement. The number of times one asked for help differed from person to person. Also, how a student determined what help was differed from race to race. The lack of help, however, did not affect one's grade point average.

They focus on the grades 7 through 10. They use a three step program to see the growth with the students. Also they control what goes on the in the class room and talk about what they discovered. Results show that home resources, individual behavior problems, and attitude toward mathematics were related to growth in mathematics. It also talked about how if a student started in a higher level math class there was not much growth difference.

Throughout the years the gap a narrowed but only in science. We have seen an improvement within physics and chemistry. They did see that there had been a change in math but not by much. The education systems want to change this gap so that everyone is on the same level. After this study, they found that the information was helpful.
