Conference theme: African Higher Education Week: Transforming Tertiary Agricultural Education - a Platform for the Way Forward. -- 19-25 July, 2014, Hotel Grand VIP, Maputo, Mozambique.

Rural development and agriculture are essential to eradicating poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. The EU supports various initiatives in the field of sustainable agriculture with a view to reducing poverty, increasing food security and protecting natural resources.

" Organised by the African Union Commission and the NEPAD Agency,the 11th Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme Partnership Platform (CAADP PP) will take place in Cape Town, South Africa. The CAADP PP will be opened by the AUC Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, H.E Rhoda Peace Tumusiime and the NEPAD Agency's Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ibrahim Assane Mayaki. Also in attendance will be High level African Leadership, Regional Economic Communities, government ministries, farmers' organisations, the private sector, civil society and development partners. This year's CAADP PP meeting will focus on African socio-economic development strategies to stimulate agriculture-led growth and country commitment to put agriculture at the top of national development agendas."

"As part of the NEN Close Up series, the Near East, North Africa, Europe and Central Asia Division hosted a knowledge sharing event on rural youth and economic empowerment in the Near East and North Africa. Through a regional grant, IFAD is partnering with Making Cents International, a social enterprise based in Washington DC, and Silatech, a social initiative working to create opportunities for young people throughout the Arab world, to help increase the employment and self-employment opportunities of more than 18,000 young people of ages 15-35. Covering four countries, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen, the 3-year joint programme, Rural Youth Economic Empowerment Programme, is seeking to test innovative financial and non-financial engagement tools for young rural people. The event provided an opportunity to learn from the programme and to discuss how the findings can inform IFAD's future engagement with young people in rural areas. En Achao, el Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA) realizó una jornada de trabajo junto a representantes de empresas turísticas de la Isla Grande. Pese a la alta demanda por servicios turísticos y gastronómicos que por estos días experimenta la provincia de Chiloé, representantes de la industria y carnicerías de la zona se dieron cita en una capacitación convocada por el Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA) en torno al desarrollo de diferentes cortes de carne del cordero chilote, orientados a la cocina gourmet. La actividad se realizó en dependencias del Liceo Insular de Achao, donde el reconocido chef Leonardo Chacón en compañía de la destacada cocinera chilota Lorna Muñoz, compartió con los asistentes una jornada teórica- práctica en que se enfatizaron las diversas posibilidades y ventajas gastronómicas del aprovechamiento de los cortes de carne cordero con indicación geográfica mediante un buen desposte, diversificando con ello la oferta hacia los consumidores, y propiciando un mayor dinamismo de la cadena ovina en el archipiélago. "Queremos levantar este producto y quizá en un tiempo más poder disponer en los restaurantes de corderos despostados. 125 Kenyan curriculum developers and 60 authors and publishers have come together from 24 to 27 November in Nairobi to discuss curriculum reforms in their country. The workshop aimed at sharing an inter-regional comparative perspective on curriculum trends, issues and strategies with a focus on competency-based approaches. The long-term objective of the workshop is to inform curriculum reform/review processes and to align these with the national development plan: Kenya Vision 2030."

The USAID-supported East Africa Trade and Investment Hub, Syngenta and the Inter Region Economic Network (IREN), have launched the second edition of the agribusiness competition dubbed "Young Innovators in Agribusiness Competition." This follows last year's successful Agribusiness competition that attracted over 800 participants from sub-Saharan Africa. Out of the 35 youth finalists, ten have gone on to win other prizes in the energy and agribusiness sectors; ten have expanded and retained their agro-related enterprises and 15 are employed or pursuing higher education. This year's competition is open to East African youth aged 18-35 years, who reside in the East African Community, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Mauritius or Madagascar, and have a start-up or small and medium sized enterprise (SME) involved in the agricultural value chain.

Brief description of the Assignment: The objective of this assignment is to support the operationalization of the Jobs for Youth in Africa Strategy, elaborated as a response to Africa's youth unemployment and underemployment crisis. Specific objectives include the development of a strong pipeline of projects under the umbrella of the Bank's Job creation initiative for at least 15 Bank's Regional Member Countries. The scoping exercises aims to learn lessons on best and scalable practices at country level. The junior consultant will also support other activities which has a focus on job creation. The junior consultant will work closely with the Department for Human and Social Development and will further help coordinate at Bank wide level and across the Bank's task force on 'Jobs for Youth'

The Joint Communication "Towards a renewed partnership with African, Caribbean and Pacific countries", sets out the main ideas for a revitalised political partnership with ACP countries, focussing on common interests and going beyond the sole aim of development policy and donor-recipient paradigm. Distinguished speakers, representing both the ACP regions and the EU, will gather together to share their expectations, views and recommendations regarding the future of the ACP-EU relations, focusing on which are the key priorities and the biggest challenges ahead. This session will also provide the opportunity to reflect on how to make the current relationship fit for delivering on common challenges and mutual interests in an interconnected and globalised world. Remaining time would be devoted to questions and interventions from the audience. "
