The Committed Sardine - blog - 4 views

  • Did you ever wonder why almost all of Google’s services are free of charge? Well, now you know. That old saying, “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch,” still holds true. You may not be paying Google with dollars (aside from clicking on those Google ads), but you are paying with information. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing, but you should be aware of it.

WNY Education Associates » Goomoodleikiog: Transforming Teaching in Plain English - 1 views

  • Maybe good teaching and good use of the web is about all about crafting the way we live our verbs and our adjectives. It’s about paying attention to what kids are doing: where they can engage and how they can connect. Maybe our job is simply to study them in action, determine which of those skills need further support, provide feedback, and shift our position and the support we provide in response. Teachers who wonder how the web can revolutionize teaching and learning might appreciate this Common Craft-style video by Leigh Murrell and Heidi Beezley:

The 4Ss of Note Taking With Technology | Edutopia - 0 views

  • Whether students work in cloud-based platforms or take pictures of analog notes, technology lets them save their work indefinitely. I once had a wonderful advisee. Every afternoon, we repeated this routine. Find his planner. Find his notebooks. Make sure that he could find his notes in said notebooks. Put the notebooks into his backpack. When we finally got this child a laptop, everything changed. He typed all of his notes in Google Docs so that he could access them from any device and from anywhere. Suddenly, everything was truly saved.
  • note taking is an activity where the note taker needs to process information and reframe, reorganize, and work with the data to make note taking useful.

Ever wonder how dogs smell? This video explains it. - Daily Genius - 0 views

  •
"Most people who have a dog love their dog and think he or she is pretty awesome. But even if your dog is a snarling, yapping jerk that is mean and threatening to everyone (Yep, I'm looking at you, Scooby - dog across the street!), his nose is still pretty darned amazing. (and yes, we know you love him in spite of his jerk tendencies). The video below, courtesy of the always awesome TED-Ed, takes a look at how your dog's nose helps them to 'see' the world. You'll better understand your dog's olfactory prowess, and hopefully, let them sniff a little longer on their next walk!"

8 Wonderful Websites for Easy Coding Activities for Any Age or Level! - Teacher Reboot Camp - 1 views

  •
"Coding is the ability to write step by step instructions (programs) for a computer to understand to complete a task. The Hour of Code website has tons of ready to go online activities that get students to write code that results in a number of cool outcomes, such as making a monster dance, creating avatars, remixing music or making a game. When students complete these easy tutorials they learn these important skills- logic, problem solving, fitting puzzle pieces together, selection, instructional writing, editing, revision, and creation. Below are some great websites to find engaging coding projects that take an hour or less. Most require no registration! Just provide students with a quick introduction to the task on the projector and the link for them to get started. I would highly recommend doing the activity first. In the next post I will introduce you to unplugged activities, which get students to focus on specific coding skills you will notice in these activities, which include working with puzzles, providing good instructions, problem solving and algorithms."

Robot-Enhanced Creative Writing and Storytelling (featuring Ozobot and Wonder's Dot) | User Generated Education - 1 views

  •
"There have been complaints leveraged against out of the box robots like Dash and Dot, Ozobot, Hummingbird, Sphero. The complaints usually revolve around the canned and prescriptive nature of their uses and programs, that they lack creative engagement by the younger users. I personally love the excitement my learners have using these robots. As with all tools and technologies and with creative framing, though, they can be used in creative and imaginative ways. Mention robots to many English teachers and they'll immediately point down the hall to the science classroom or to the makerspace, if they have one. At many schools, if there's a robot at all, it's located in a science or math classroom or is being built by an after-school robotics club. It's not usually a fixture in English classrooms. But as teachers continue to work at finding new entry points to old material for their students, robots are proving to be a great interdisciplinary tool that builds collaboration and literacy skills. (How Robots in English Class Can Spark Empathy and Improve Writing) This past term, I had my 2nd through 4th grade students work on their robot-enhanced creative writing and stories. In small groups, students were asked to create a fictional storyline and use StoryboardThat.com to create both the physical scenes and the accompanying narrative. As part of their directions, they were told that they were going to create a 3D setting out of cardboard boxes, foam board, LED lights, and other craft materials; and that they would use Wonder's Dot with the Blocky App and Ozobot as the characters in their stories. Preparation time was divided between storyboarding, creating the scene, and learning how to use/code the robots. Because of all of the preparation and practice, the recording actually went quite quick and smoothly. Here is a break down of the learning events that learners were asked to complete:"
