Heritage Language Spotlights are designed to provide information focused on specific heritage languages. Each spotlight includes an overview of the language and selections from our Heritage Voices Collection that often feature a heritage speaker or highlight a program from the Heritage Languages Program Database.

The Germanic Lexicon Project (formerly the Indo-European Language resources page) is an online collection of lexicons of the early Germanic languages. The Web site provides free access to an impressive number of copyright-expired language reference publications related to these language, either as digitized texts (encoded using HTML or XML) or as scanned page images. The project is ongoing, and the site's author invites users to participate in the digitization process by correcting individual pages (full instructions on how to participate are provided): consequently, the project is developing into an important international collaboration. The grammars, dictionaries, glossaries and readers available at the time of cataloguing, in various forms, covered the following languages: Gothic; Anglo-Saxon; Old and Middle High German; Old Saxon, Old Frisian; and Old Norse. Today is the video age, with many possibilities for integrating video in to language learning. Language learning is a multi-sensory process and video allows communicative learning skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing, with one resource. Video for ALL will be the European project that will bring together all current methodologies, ideas and innovative practices to teach and learn languages by integrating digital video. The project believes that video must be a basic tool for a more multidisciplinary approach to language teaching and learning in today's world.

This website provides links and references for the use of corpora, corpus linguistics and corpus analysis in the context of language learning and teaching. It also links to two ongoing research and development projects in which I am involved, the EU MINERVA project SACODEYL (development and pedagogical exploitation of youth language corpora) and the ELISA corpus, which I started to develop at the University of Tübingen (Applied English Linguistics) as a resource for language learning and teaching.

The Dictionary of the Scots Language (DSL) comprises electronic editions of the two major historical dictionaries of the Scots language: the 12-volume Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST) and the 10-volume Scottish National Dictionary (SND). DOST contains information about Scots words in use from the twelfth to the end of the seventeenth centuries (Older Scots); and SND contains information about Scots words in use from 1700 to the 1970s (modern Scots). Together these 22 volumes provide a comprehensive history of Scots, and a New Supplement now (2005) brings the record of the language up to date.

Corpus Encoding Standard (CES) is an online set of guidelines developed by the Expert Advisory Group on Language Engineering Standards (EAGLES), designed to be optimally suited for use in language engineering research and applications, in order to serve as a set of encoding standards for corpus-based work in natural language processing applications

The Research and Development Unit for English Studies (RDUES), based in the School of English at Birmingham City University, is a small team of corpus linguists, software engineers and statisticians. We carry out fundamental and applied research in corpus linguistics, developing new descriptions of the language in use and tools for the extraction and management of knowledge in databases. The Universal Teacher website provides numerous resources for those teaching English literature, language and theatre studies at school and sixth-form levels in the UK. The site is approved by byteachers.com and adheres to the national curriculum as taught and examined. There are good online tutorials for specific texts, grouped according to level, including: Key Stage; GCSE; and A-Level standards. There are also sections for students with special educational needs, and teaching with ITC. Topics covered by tutorials include: researching dialects; language and gender; language change; Shakespeare's plays; Charles Dickens; Jonathan Swift; Arthur Miller; Thomas Hardy; Charlotte Brontë; John Steinbeck; Jane Austen; Geoffrey Chaucer; Ted Hughes; William Blake; Robert Browning; and popular films such as Forrest Gump and Star Wars. The Oxford Text Archive hosts the Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS) Centre for Literature, Languages and Linguistics, one of the five Subject Centres of the AHDS. The Archive holds several thousand digital resources of interest to researchers, teachers, and learners working across the range of literary and linguistic disciplines. Its holdings include electronic editions of works by individual authors, standard reference works, and a range of language corpora. Searches can be executed by author, title, or language, and other criteria will be added over time. Users can also use these criteria to browse the catalogue. The resource is freely available. The Archive also provides support for the creation and use of electronic texts, including guides to good practice, and advice and tools for using the Text Encoding Initiative's Guidelines for encoding texts in SGML and XML. The Corpus and LAnguage Variation In English Research Group (CLAVIER) is a Research Centre recently founded by the Universities of Bergamo, Firenze, Modena and Reggio Emilia, Roma La Sapienza and Siena, and currently based in Modena. The shared methodological framework combines two complementary strands of linguistic investigation - corpus analysis and discourse analysis - to research on language variation in English, both in quantitative and qualitative terms. Thus, one of the main aims of CLAVIER is to contribute to an integration of quantitative and qualitative methods in research on language variation in terms of diachronic, geographic and socio-cultural dimensions through the methodological tools offered by corpora. Particular attention is also given to the analysis of different genres and methodological registers.

The Web Site "Scottish Bibliographies Online Catalogue" presents information on and links to the following bibliographies: Bibliography of Scotland (BOS); Bibliography of Scottish Gaelic (BOSG); Bibliography of Scottish Literature in Translation (BOSLIT); Bibliography of the Scots Language (BOSLAN); Union Catalogue of Art Books in Libraries in Scotland (UCABLIS); US and Canadian Newspaper Holdings in Scottish Libraries; Scottish Book Trade Index (SBTI); and Scottish Books 1505-1640. As such this is an essential resource for anyone researching or studying Scots language, Scottish history, literature, and culture. It is useful for international scholars wishing to locate particular works or editions of works. The databases can be searched by subject, author or keyword, and there is a facility for a cross search.

a web site devoted to translations and parodies of Lewis Carroll's popular poem, 'The Jabberwocky', first published in 'Through the Looking Glass, and what Alice Found There'. The original poem, renowned for its inventive use of portmanteau and suggestive nonce words, has been translated into almost 30 different languages. This site hosts 58 separate translations, into languages including Afrikaans, Choctaw, Czech, Esperanto, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Klingon (incomplete), Latin, Russian, Spanish, Welsh, and Yiddish. In addition to the translations there are 23 parodies on the site. A more useful section consists of extracts from Carroll's original text, including Humpty Dumpty's exegesis. Carroll's own interpretative suggestions and pronunciation guides (from his correspondence) are also reproduced on the site, as are a few short notes on the origins of the poem, and comments on the difficulties facing its translators.

A blog for authors and translators, a place where authors talk about translations of their books and encounters with their translators and translators talk about authors and translations. The blog proposes a short interview, with questions already available on a special tab and translated into several languages, encouraging both authors and translators to talk about their work in their own language.
