  • As discussed before, data is entered by selecting a cell and entering data. In the illustration below, if you wanted to enter the year column (column A) you would click on cell A2, type 1997 and press [ENTER]. Entering the data would automatically advance the active cell to the next row or cell A3.

    I wanted to add sticky notes but that does not appear to be an option with this material. Id the format of the document? I plan to include this in my course. Now I have to decide if I eliminate my video Excel intro that I created in jing or do I add this as another resource. I think I am inclined to keep both.

The Virtual Terrapin Station will provide access to Grateful Dead Archive materials and tools to facilitate public contributions to the archive. This project will enable the university to convert a significant part of a traditional archive to digital form and make it available online while simultaneously experimenting with the impact of fostering, creating, and curating a large, socially constructed archive. The project will develop a click-through permissions form for content contributors and will extend the reach of the Grateful Dead Archive to the academic research community.   • New research released by the National School Boards Association reveals data showing we all might need to reevaluate our assumptions: It turns out kids are actually using the Internet for educational purposes. In fact, according to the study, "Creating & Connecting: Research and Guidelines on Online Social--and Educational--Networking," the percentage of children specifically discussing schoolwork online outpaces the percentage that spend time downloading music.For the survey, the NSBA teamed up with Grunwald Associates to poll 1,277 9- to 17-year-olds, 1,039 parents, and 250 school district leaders who "make decisions on Internet policy." It found that a full 50 percent of students who are online spend time discussing schoolwork, and 59 percent spend time talking about education-related topics, "including college or college planning; learning outside of school; news; careers or jobs; politics, ideas, religion, or morals; and schoolwork."

    The kids are engaging and participating meaningfully and purposefully online. We should pay more attention to contexts for engagement. When it is personally meaningful, kids will engage (ie. American Idol auditions), and when it isn't (college classes), they won't. Time to look at elements in the contexts which encourage meaningful participation.

  • Physical proximity appears to enhance student retention and achievement by minimizing perceived psychological distance. For instance, research involving students who live on-campus during their first year in college has demonstrated higher levels of retention than for those students who live off-campus during the same period (St. John, Hu, Simmons, & Musoba, 2001). Additionally, Braxton, Johnson, and Shaw-Sullivan (1997) have suggested that higher degrees of social integration lead to corresponding levels of commitment to the institution. In other words, students with clear social involvement on-campus were found to persist at a higher rate than those who are socially isolated for one reason or another.

    hi jane, you are doing great! thanks for adding these links... other tags i would add to these resources would be andragogy, and knowles or malcolmknowles. if you put a space between words when you create a tag, they become 2 different tags. if you want them to be separated by a space just put "quotes arond" the phrase. then it will a be one link tag rather than 2 separate links. think of tags as words that will help you (and those of us in this group) remember how to find this bookmark again. or how to find resources on a similar topic. The tags help organize and sort the bookmarks into keywords that describe the content. : ) me

  • In the most general sense, it usually means encouraging students to use active techniques (experiments, real-world problem solving) to create more knowledge and then to reflect on and talk about what they are doing and how their understanding is changing. The teacher makes sure she understands the students' preexisting conceptions, and guides the activity to address them and then build on them.
  • Constructivism is basically a theory -- based on observation and scientific study -- about how people learn. It says that people construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences.
  • Constructivism modifies that role, so that teachers help students to construct knowledge rather than to reproduce a series of facts. The constructivist teacher provides tools such as problem-solving and inquiry-based learning activities with which students formulate and test their ideas, draw conclusions and inferences, and pool and convey their knowledge in a collaborative learning environment. Constructivism transforms the student from a passive recipient of information to an active participant in the learning process. Always guided by the teacher, students construct their knowledge actively rather than just mechanically ingesting knowledge from the teacher or the textbook.
