Lisa, I can’t believe how amazing your course is! I want to take it!!

To decide if online learning is right for your child, learn as much as possible about the school, program, course, and instructor.

The first half of my course is more familiar to me as I have taught this material in a face to face setting (albeit differently than I will be teaching it online).  I can anticipate the questions, confusion, and challenges that students will face.  The second half of my course contains material I have never formally taught anyone.  Maybe this is why I am stalled?

“Why we are doing this?” piece for each of my discussion and reflection assignments.  I want my students to understand that these activities have a true purpose. 

I am a sprinter not a long distance runner ( not only in exercise but in most things). When sprinting I do a lot of thing very quickly or get them done and then rest. This is in contrast to a more methodical slow paced but progressive long distance run.

Originally I tried to make my course more to my preferences.

I am very interested in the hyper-content design. I like the idea that with this model, students determine the order of their own learning activities. In this model, there may be a few things that could be tricky; for example, setting up group activities might be left to the students to manage since they wouldn’t all be completing the same activities at the same time.

 The creater of  Tagxedo emphasized to me that Tagxedo has a few extra qualities  not found in all Word Cloud Generators. After visiting and experimenting with the site I agree that Tagxedo does offer some awesome features.

It is school friendly, due to the fact that it does not require a user log-in.

It is through design that teachers set the stage for a community of inquiry, but it is through the facilitation and experience with that design that the community is actually established.

imagine the design as being the outline of a painting.  As the community is established and evolves its members fill the outline with color.  Together they create a picture of learning.  The more active and engaged the participants, the more the picture will evolve.  Ultimately, my goal is for the community to paint a picture with detail, depth, subtlety, and nuance.  I want my students to take the picture with them after the course and bring it into a new community and continue to share and develop it.   In turn, I will take the picture I am left with at the end of the course and look for pieces where my design succeeded in encouraging color with detail, depth, subtlety and nuance as well as pieces that maybe weren’t colored in as much or as well.  I will adapt my design based on the influence of the community in an attempt to maximize its potential to create a high quality picture of learning.

A similar example occurs while learning to drive a car. Our conscious mind must be aware of three pedals, gas, brake and clutch. Also important are the rear view mirror and the steering wheel as well as what is in front of us. We learn to synchronize these complex movements and actions with great effort and attention. But in time, our mind frees the conscious mind from this effort, and we drive without thinking about it. Have you never experienced being it distracted and talking while driving and when you arrive at your destination you cannot remember the route you followed?

This illustrates the process of learning as: curiosity or interest, understanding, memorizing and internalizing. Through these steps learning moves from the conscious to the unconscious mind, freeing up conscious memory and energy; in other words you internalize the learning. Internalization of knowledge is an essential part of knowledge itself. What is internalized has great impact on future behavior and beliefs.

But, real learning only occurs when, motivated by curiosity, the person constructs knowledge by seeking those materials, techniques, concepts, methods and elements, which can produce her own internal theories that then undergo testing and are subsequently internalized. This is the never ending search for knowledge driven by the innate curiosity of human beings.

A Tangled Web Gather students in a circle sitting around you on the floor. Hold a large ball of yarn. Start by telling the students something about yourself. Then roll the ball of yarn to a student without letting go of the end of the yarn. The student who gets the ball of yarn tells his or her name and something good about himself or herself. Then the student rolls the yarn to somebody else, holding on to the strand of yarn. Soon students have created a giant web. After everyone has spoken, you and all the students stand up, continuing to hold the yarn. Start a discussion of how this activity relates to the idea of teamwork -- for example, the students need to work together and not let others down. To drive home your point about teamwork, have one student drop his or her strand of yarn; that will demonstrate to students how the web weakens if the class isn't working together.       Amy Henning, W.
