How to teach kids PowerPoint

Doing a presentation? We talk about PowerPoint. Doing a podcast? We learn about making a podcast. I teach the skills kids need in order to do the assignment. In the end its how they apply those skills to the subject matter that should be assessed. A good PowerPoint gets a better grade then a weak PowerPoint? The focus should not be on the PowerPoint but the information that it presents. Should we assess students on their presentation of information? Yes, but not on how they use a specific piece of software.

Research on how to use PowerPoint effectively

Jim Kenney at Pepperdine University outlines an effective method for becoming comfortable with becoming an online instructor. He has taught a course to instructors who are going to be teaching online, and on his website he lays out steps to prepare you for teaching online effectively. Some of the steps include using Powerpoints and other tools that are used F2F online, and progressively adapting the format as you become more comfortable teaching online.

I was very excited about this course and information until I read through and found that some of it was basic knowledge and some of it was junk. However, the end had great resource bibliography which I am using in my class. :)

In Module 3 of my class on "The Politics of Dr. Seuss," we will be exploring the political cartoons that Dr. Seuss and others produced during World War 2. These cartoons mostly appeared in PM, a New York newspaper, from 1941 to 1943. I discovered these cartoons in a book called Dr. Seuss & Co. Go to War, and I had planned to scan and upload cartoons from the book. But I searched in MERLOT and was so pleased to find a treasure trove of hundreds of cartoons! I can draw on these for my Powerpoint presentation to the class and direct students to this website to find even more.

The Parade of Games web site was created to provide educators and trainers with easy-to-assemble educational games in a technology-enhanced environment to support key learning points. The site demonstrates the creative use of popular game shows and other familiar games to reinforce learning. Educators and trainers can select and download those PowerPoint games that support their learning objectives and are compatible with the technology capabilities of their learning environment. I can use this in my course to help the students engage the content and make learning fun and interactive.
