Scientifi to Decimal Conversions - 0 views

Another activity on the same website as the previous posted one. Instead of working with operations with scientific notation, students can practice converting between standard notation and scientific notation.
  • to have the computer give you a mix of problems
    • Celeste Sisson

Like this option as some students tend to mix up rules when different problems are placed together. This will emphasize paying attention to details of the questions and having the students ask them self how to approach the problem.

  • Enter your answer using the keyboard. Press the 'x' key, and the computer will recognize that you now wish to enter the exponent of a number in scientific format. If you make a mistake, you can correct it using the backspace key.

Education Week: Schools Test E-Reader Devices With Dyslexic Students - 0 views

  • Barnes & Noble's Nook, and the Intel Reader. But the jury is still out on just how effective those digital tools are in helping struggling readers.
  • Foss, who himself has dyslexia, created the Intel Reader, a mobile e-reader that can take pictures of text and then convert the text into an audio file within seconds. Students can also change the size of the text on the screen and the speed of the voice that reads the text aloud.

  • What I do believe is that it will be increasingly important to maintain our own learning.
  • I am truly surprised to see how many students from other states and countries are part of SLN.
    • alexandra m. pickett

if you look at the numbers it is really only about 2% that come from outside NYS.
    • Catherine Strattner

I did recognize that the portion of students wasn't that large, but I am still surprised that it is even 2%. I think I could have communicated myself better by noting the number of countries and states outside of New York which were represented.

      yes. 98% come from NYS.
  • Especially with younger students, this feeling of uncertainty can lead them to completely shut down.  If students trust in their guide, the teacher, they are much more likely to persevere through the uncertainty and attain resolution.
  • I realize that online teaching includes continuous reflection, assessment, and development of yourself as an online instructor and of the course itself.
  • K-12 online instruction does exist.
  • Ultimately, I have learned that being learner-centered involves much more than making students do most of the work.  It involves understanding the needs of each of your individual students, both academically and personally.  It involves striving to meet those needs on an individual basis, while promoting self-directed learning.  It involves being empathetic and addressing the specific limitations each student may have and striving to break through those limitations together.  In my mind, that is what true interaction is all about, and it is one of the best ways to engage students in learning more deeply.

Catherine, I love the metaphor! Nothing to add - you said it well. Diane

      Thanks!
  • What I am realizing is that there really is a significant difference between creating an online course from scratch and converting a face to face course.
  • I want my students to understand that these activities have a true purpose.  I want to remind them of that purpose each time they engage in these activities.
  • I kept finding myself asking “How can this contribute to higher levels of cognitive presence?  Isn’t that ultimately the point of developing teaching and social presence?”

LD OnLine :: Technology-Supported Math Instruction for Students with Disabilities: Two ... - 0 views

  • One kind of cognitive task that can be offloaded to a computer is converting text, symbols, and mathematical notations. These tools can support students who have difficulty decoding text and symbols
  • Too often, special education students study mathematics by first learning isolated skills. Then they apply these skills by solving narrowly defined math problems that are purported to provide practice for these skills. Unfortunately, this strategy often leads to the practice of rote procedural skills

IMLS Awards National Leadership Grants to 51 Institutions: $17.9 Million Dist... - 0 views

  • The University of California, Santa Cruz Campus will digitize materials from its Grateful Dead Archive and make them available in a unique and cutting-edge Web site, the Virtual Terrapin Station. The Virtual Terrapin Station will provide access to Grateful Dead Archive materials and tools to facilitate public contributions to the archive. This project will enable the university to convert a significant part of a traditional archive to digital form and make it available online while simultaneously experimenting with the impact of fostering, creating, and curating a large, socially constructed archive. The project will develop a click-through permissions form for content contributors and will extend the reach of the Grateful Dead Archive to the academic research community. It will also implement and contribute to the development of the IMLS-funded exhibition tool, Omeka

Why I do what I do | JJ Wagner - 0 views

  • I didn’t like English
    • Donna Angley

We are complete opposites. I love English because I love to write and find it easy to explain why I like something I've read, how it makes me feel emotionally, etc. Writing is as natural as breathing for me. That being said, I don't understand math beyond the basics. Stats was a VERY difficult course for me, and quite frankly if it hadn't been curved I don't think I would have passed. I do understand that math is a lot more concrete; however, it still doesn't make sense to me. Like I always say, everybody is good at something.
  • discussion online.

Try thinking about the posts as small research projects that you share with our class. If you have to respond to a comment, again - think of it as a short research assignment. You're still collaborating, but it will feel less social/personal.
    • Diane Gusa

Hi Jerry, I think the test question is reflective of the discpline. In education and sociology I am looking for application and synthesis of the material. In math I think doing the problem is like a math essay, is it not? I hate that my grandson, gifted in math (he would convert fractions in his head at age 4) but he is only feed in school on repetitive worksheets on computation...any suggestions what I can do this summer to feed his gift? Supporting the Spectrum - Building a Bridge between Families and Schools - 1 views

  • Reflections of Module 1
    • alexandra m. pickett

      BRILLIANT!! : )
  • The one thing that I did not realize before entering online courses is how it would impact my writing.
  • In addition we as instructors should continue our learning process.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • It is important to create an online community to shift the course from a teacher centered course to a student centered course. We want to facilitate our courses and guide content, but let the students dig deep to provide a rich and diverse experience that has meaning to the participants.
  • So what have I learned? I have learned who I am as a learner, and what I appreciate in a professor. I have learned that I need to let my voice and personality be known to my students because that is how we will connect and become emotionally connected to our course. I reflect on Professor Pickett’s introduction by her daughter. I immediately connected and realized that there was a human being behind the words, and she was relatable. This course is challenging and pushes my abilities, but the interaction with students and the professor helps me know that I am not a lone, and gives me space to evaluate my goals and reflect on what my presence is in our class and in developing the course.
    • Hedy Lowenheim

Hey Heather Thanks for reminding me of this tool. It looks very cool! Lucky you to go on vacation, must have been tricky. I have been in the same predicament, being enrolled in a course and being on vaca. Definitely a challenge, you just have to be very, very disciplined. But all of us have that in common. Hedy
  • When I read the post prompt of “Where are you?” I know that Professor meant in the course, but I immediately had a flash of Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot. “The significance of our lives and our fragile planet is then determined only by our own wisdom and courage (Sagan,2011) .”
    • alexandra m. pickett

so, you may think this course is about online teaching, but it is really about changing the world. : ) I need you to help me. Together we can do more than alone. "where are you?" is a multilayered question.
  • What I have realized in this course, is that teaching presence and social presence and cognitive presence come together to create meaningful learning environments for students and teachers. We want to facilitate this in our classrooms but also in our schools, buildings and districts. We want to create shared spaces where teachers are working together connecting, asking questions, working together to find solutions. When we look at the Seven Principles of Effective teaching, all of these principles are centered around communication and interaction. It is about forming relationships and understanding each other. It is about connecting, creating and understanding.
  • This course held a mirror up to the learner in me. Inside I want to connect with others. The social element in learning is vital. I want to connect, I want to be validated and I want to feel safe in my learning spaces. I want to learn from someone who is passionate about their subject and teaching. I want to be inspired and I want to feel like I am making a contribution. All of these elements have been present in our discussion forum. We have exchanged ideas, thoughts and we have been able to thoughtfully disagree.
