Therefore, the goal of this research was simply to interview and observe educators and students who are experimenting with these tools in the classroom to see what uses are emerging and to explore the learning affordances of blogs, wikis, and other Web 2.0 tools.

Faculty Development for Online Teaching as a Catalyst for Change | The Sloan Consortium - 0 views

  • This action research study explored the change in face-to-face teaching practices as a result of faculty professional development for online teaching. Faculty’s initial teaching model is typically born from that of their own teachers, and they teach as they were taught. However, few have any online experience as a student or a teacher. Learning to teach online may be a catalyst for faculty to reflect on and evaluate their current teaching practices.

  • Only 10% of rural Americans go online from home with high-speed connections, about one-third the rate for non-rural Americans.
  • Overall, 48 million American adults had high-speed connections in the home in February 2004. This represents a growth of 60% since March 2003 when 30 million Americans had broadband connections at home. Fully half of this growth has taken place since November 2003, suggesting that it was a broadband holiday season for many Internet users in the winter of 2003/2004.
  • As for the pool of dial-up users who may one day move to broadband, 40% say they would like to get it and 58% say they don’t plan to get it. Of the 40% who would like to get broadband at home, many are not interested in paying more for it: 22% say they would not pay an extra dime for broadband at home and on average this group said they would pay about $9.40 per month extra for broadband. Of the 58% of dial-up users who say that they are not interested in broadband at home, half say they would not pay anything extra for it. On average these users say they would pay only about $4.25 a month more for broadband.

  • We are interested in both risk and resilience - why are some individuals particularly vulnerable in response to negative life events, while others appear to be relatively resilient? And how can we promote enhanced resilience? As a part of the latter work, we study interventions designed to cultivate more positive affective styles. One such intervention that we have extensively studied over the past decade is meditation. In addition to the research on normal affective function, we also study a range of psychopathologies, all of which involve abnormalities in different aspects of emotion processing. Included among the disorders we have recently studied are adult mood and anxiety disorders, and autism, fragile X and Williams syndrome in children. Some of our current research involves: Voluntary and automatic emotion regulation. Resilience in aging. Interactions between emotion and cognitive function, particularly working memory and attention. Temperament in children, in hopes of determining early signs of vulnerability to psychopathology. Social and emotional processing differences in children and adults with autism and fragile X. Mood and anxiety disorders. The impact of pharmaco-therapy and psychotherapy on brain function in patients with mood and anxiety disorders. The effects of meditation on brain function in adept practitioners and novices. Relations between neural mechanisms of emotion and peripheral measures of inflammation and lung function in asthma.
