Firefox extention for educators-Diigo

I’ve been using Diigo for a couple of weeks now and am loving it. That’s way it’s making my recommendation for a Firefox extension.

Diigo let´s you bookmark, highlight and sticky-note the Internet! A really remarkable research tool that should be used by every teacher and student worldwide! > What´s really exciting is that you can share these annotations by making them "public" with everyone using Diigo or even create/join a group. Web 3.0…or is that 3D? Posted by edutrails on March 10th, 2007 I admit that I have been struggling to even wrap my brain around many of the new web apps out there that others seem to be raving about…blogs and wikis seem almost old school as learners move to Diigo and Second Life….mostly it’s a matter of time, but sometimes I am just overwhelmed by the ideas of other teachers with amazing creativity and vision. People like Jeff Utecht, Karl Fisch and Clay Burell blow me away (links to their blogs are to the left)…how they find the time to develop their own knowledge and share with others is beyond me…but probably the teacher that I am most in awe of is Vicki Davis…Vicki’s CoolCatTeacher blog is a veritable smorgasboard of practical applications and ideas, but also has a real mix of great vision.

Diigo Okay, Diigo is really cool.  Especially in a job like mine where I do a lot of research.  Diigo is a social annotation site so if you like surfing the net and want to leave notes on your favourite websites, Diigo is the program to do it.  Registration is free and there is no download required for basic Diigo.  It allows you to leave virtual "sticky notes" on the websites you visit.  The really cool part?  You can share your "online" notes with people of your choosing.

Diigo 3.85 (A/A-)Diigo is by far the most fully featured social bookmarking site in this list, and offers several unique capabilities. The most notable feature is that users can highlight text right on the page, as well as make annotations via a “sticky note” for later viewing.There are also other very useful features. I particularly liked the sophisticated and advanced search option for doing a keyword search of one’s own or public bookmarks. On that page you can limit a search by a phrase, and restrict a search to a URL, title, comments or highlights. You can even search “on” specific users as wellNote that when you place a “sticky note” to comment on a page for your later viewing, that note is viewable by anyone else in the Diigo community that views that page too! .There are some other interesting and unique features on Diigo. For instance, when highlighting a word on any page with Diigo’s bookmarking tool, a drop down menu automatically appears that allows users to search for that highlighted word on various search engines, social bookmarking sites; blogs, on the active site and more. I also had much more control in formatting when saving a page; and had an option to forward the page to another person as well.What about the all important group feature? Well, Diigo rounds out its offerings very nicely by just this month launching its “Groups” function. That feature looks to be a clear and elegant way to allow anyone to set up a private environment for sharing your bookmarks. Social Bookmarking For Enterprise Knowledge Management March 16th, 2007 Edit We’re very grateful to Robert Berkman, editor of The Information Advisor, for noticing our new Groups feature so quickly, and understanding the potential it adds to Diigo’s already great set of tools. In an online supplement to the magazine, posted on his blog, Intelligent Agent, he reviewed various free online services for potential enterprise use as knowledge management tools.

Create a tagging schema taxonomy: (n) the study of the general principles of scientific classification If you've had anything to do with organizing information, you've heard this term.  In the web world, site managers spend weeks developing classification systems for their content so their search features will work properly.  Now for a new version - folksonomy.  Folksonomy is the same thing as taxonomy only without the education.  Folksonomy describes the grassroots classification systems developing as more and more "tag" platforms appear online.  While some  tags are appearing as standards, it's still quite a free-for-all out there. 

I use Diigo to manage my bookmarks.  Anytime I find a page I want to save, I tell Diigo to bookmark it for me using the tags I assign that page.   Later - when I want a list of all the genealogy blogs I've bookmarked - I just click on my "genblog" tag on my Diigo page to view them. Because I have included surname tags on all the family photos I've uploaded to Flickr, I can send anyone requesting Barker information one link that displays all my Barker photo collection. The related articles section at the bottom of this post was created using Diigo to display all the links I've saved related to a specific topic (tag).

Because I use these systems daily, I've created my own tag system - a folksonomy - that I use across each of the different tagging applications/platforms I use.  For genealogy items I use the following tags: genealogy (for everything genealogy) genblog (any blog dealing with genealogy topics) genapp (genealogy software) gendex (a genealogy index - like Cindi's List) genpub (a genealogy publication) gendata (a genealogy data source) surnames for each family I'm researching location names - city, county and state - for areas I'm researching Every tagging site allows multiple tags.  I bookmark every article I write beginning with my site tag (familymatters for this blog) and then topic specific tags.  That [and Diigo's tools] is how I'm able to collect my earlier posts for a related articles list.  It's so flexible that I can create a list of only my articles or any articles I've bookmarked with a specific topic keyword. Tags are becoming an important component of your research toolbox so spend a few minutes developing a plan - a folksonomy - of keywords for your research.  Anyone who's interested in developing a standard for genealogy tags, please let me know in the comments.  My tags are very handy for my research, but "our" tags can help us all!

Alrighty boys, this post is simply for demonstrating how easy diigo is to get some helpful articles online which are considered as related or useful to the readers of your blog or website, but it's quite handy if you wanna gather the stuff for your personal research as well. After you read the following and decide to try it out, get the diigo toolbar first, do those things step by step, trust me, it won't take you more that 10 minutes to get familiar with it at all.

These websites, and others like them, do a wide variety of things — but here’s what they tend to have in common: 1) They are more like software than like documents; 2) They are social, rather than solitary; 3) They are environments within which you do something; 4) They involve user-generated content; 5) They allow users to organise and tag content; 6) They are different every time you turn up; 7) They make use of RSS feeds (this will get its own ‘Thing’ - don’t worry). This is how the web is now. These are some of the things that will make your website better. Allow the users of your website to interact with you and each other. Let them provide some of the content — make it their own space.

People like to spend time, hang out, find their space, form groups, discuss common interests and contribute. Your website can provide those things for people. A Web 2.0 approach to your site means it’s not just a brochure with a cash register attached. It’s a place where people come and spend time.

Web 2.0 can also provide you with a range of tools with which to connect your music business to the world. Building a web page that has web 2.0 elements is one thing — but you can also join, use and adapt the existing web 2.0 tools mentioned above to help you connect with a community, engage in the conversation, and make and organise media.

I love thee for your practical knowledge management style. 3. I love thee for thou art so easy to use. I click, I bookmark, I leave a sticky note, I see my sticky notes when I return to a website I have been to before. I smile and say…

Why it might be a killer: It combines features from a bunch of different sites into one thing, and all of these features work really well together. The ease with which you can add your content to blogs is really useful, and if students get word of this, it will make their lives writing papers and studying for their different subjects so much easier. When Diigo is criticized on blogs, there is a dedicated base of users that attack the bad review with proof of the site’s worth, which makes it hard to argue with.

We've seen Diigo before, but now it has a few tweaks to simplify it. Diigo is meant as a collaborative research tool to let you highlight and bookmark specific portions of text you find on the Web. Diigo now also lets groups discuss highlighted text and and publish it onto a blog.

A better way to remember your online research April 15th, 2007 · No Comments How often have you found yourself scouring the web for information on a specific topic only to forget which websites you’ve visited and what information was valuable? That’s where I find myself a lot of times when I do online research. Whether that’s compiling a list of pros/cons for all the content management solutions out there to gathering data to write a paper, inevitably I forget something. You know how it is, you sit there and you scratch your head knowing there’s a reason you came to the conclusion you did, but can’t remember what it was. To everyone out there like feels my pain, I want to introduce you to Diigo. Here’s a brief rundown of what it does (as it relates to online research). Highlights text on web pages to make them stand out. Add comments to highlighted text or to the web page overall. Provides a central location to view all your highlights and/or comments.

And the cherry on top of all that is that there is no software installation required. All those features are easily accessible through a bookmarklet. If you prefer, there is a downloadable toolbar as well. The beauty of Diigo is that it documents your research. Before, I used to use a text editor. It was terrible. If I’d visit an interesting website, I’d make note of the URL, any interesting text, and any other tidbits I’d want to remember. Then I’d save it with some vague filename wherever the default save location was on my computer only to never find it again. And I call myself a tech-savvy.

Those of you, that used Diigo for the administration of their sources of Internet, I would like to refer to a very interesting new function, the possibility, of furnishing groups. Within these groups you can collect together with other sources to a certain topic and furnish even a forum, within whose framework to the appropriate article opinions can be exchanged. That offers numerous potenzielle use possibilities within the ranges school, teachings and research. This all more than - as you an instructive Flash Tutorial shows - which is very easy application. Who with Diigo is new and itself more broadly about this service and its use to inform would like, finds here, likewise in the form of Flash Tutorials, thus to small films, all necessary guidances. I can only recommend to you to try Diigo out once; it is for me at present best service of this kind in the Web.

Trust is communal: Trust is now created in a wiki-way. The social tools of 2.0 (eg diigo) make it ever easier for people to share what they think of a product or a supplier with their community, rapidly and in a way that is much more readily trusted by most consumers than old-style marketing messages. Sony tells you its PlayStation 3 is the dog's. The community tells them its made a heap of mistakes (1.1m views on YouTube of How to Kill a Brand 1.1m of PS3 vs Wii - apple style). How does your shop help the community decide what to trust?

Diigo The web it seems is becoming only the surface of what is there. For a while we have had social bookmarking, but I recently found a new tool called Diigo which allows for social annotation. Diigo provides for social tagging as well but what sets it apart is the ability to add annotations to your view of a web site. Simply highlight some text, right click select the item "Add Sticky note" and leave an annotation. Mark the annotation, public, private or share it with a group who will see it if they are logged into Diigo and go to the site where annotations have been left by other group members.This creates a remarkable social space which well facilitates discussions on academic papers, family sites, software and many other things. One of my new favourite tools.
