  • I received an email the other week asking me to take part in and review a  new service which finally launched outright this week called "Diigo".It's nice to know that people read my blog, enjoy what I ramble on about and would like me to comment on it, but anyway, on with the review.Diigo is a not your usual social bookmarking site like del.icio.us or social commentary site like Reddit or Digg, they call it a "Social Annotation website".They have a toolbar that integrates with Firefox, Flock and Internet Explorer that allows you to add "Sticky notes" to pages, post the pages to a del.icio.us-type bookmarking service (and del.icio.us itself plus others), forward highlighted text via email to a friend and, most importantly, add comments to webpages which other users can then view (or you could choose to make them private but that's hardly the point of a social annotation site now is it?!).After you have your Diigo account, you'll be prompted to install the relevant toolbar for your browser (Sorry Safari fans, I don't think you're supported yet), once that's installed and you've restarted your browser the fun begins!The annotation system is accessed via a your context menu (right-click on the webpage):

  • To get the best out of Diigo,you will have to download either,a toolbar (IE,Firefox or Flock) or a Diigolet (also available for Opera and Safari).The toolbar offers all of Diigo’s options and the Diigolet lets you get the most of Diigo,on any computer that cannot have the toolbar installed on it.
  • it was very easy to highlight text,make a sticky note of the highlighted text you want to keep and move it around the page,or go to the Diigo website and view all of your notes to date.You can also put tags to your notes and you’ve also got the option of whether to keep your notes private or make them public. The bookmarks are just as easy to save,just click on the bookmark button,enter the url and a few details,click on Save,and it’s done.All i can say it is extremely easy to use and for anybody who makes lots of notes from websites,it’s a great site to use.

Day in and day out, I can work more quickly and easily. It’s so powerful I still haven’t scratched the surface. They seem to be making it better all the time, and they listen to their users. Diigo rocks the Web!

  • The fundamental problems of annotation, regarding construction and usability - remain, even though the web infrastructure has opened up.
  • The memex concept of “trails” doesn’t seem to be captured by many of the current systems (except perhaps TrailFire and ShiftSpace? ) I think the wiki article on memex covers the differences: http://en.wikip....org/wiki/Memex
  • We could be wrong about that, perhaps Diigo or some evolved form of Google Notebook will be the One True Meta-web the market selects. But we should at least stop to consider what it means to have our online culture be privately controlled (or pseudo-publicly controlled; ICANN, etc.).

  • eyalnow April 18th, 2007 at 9:02 am I discovered Diigo two months ago, became an avid user and a self-proclaimed product evangelist, and recently started working for the company. Diigo for me is the knowledge-management solution I was looking for. What sets diigo apart is that it handles *Knowledge*, rather than mere links. It is the ONLY solution that lets me *permanently* highlight and annotate specific text on a webpage, which is then saved to my diigo profile. Diigo complements the mental process in which a sentence “jumps” at you, and you make a mental note about it. By highlighting the sections I deem important, I better understand and remember what I read. I believe there is scientific proof for this. As time goes by, I’m building a repository of all the important Knowledge I find on the net, which I can easily manage, tag, retrieve and aggregate. Regarding the ’social’ aspect: Diigo provides me immediate personal benefits, and I can then share this knowledge with others of my choosing, and follow what other individuals or groups are finding on the net. Not just the pages(links) they are browsing, but the actual sections that they deem important, and their reactions to it. I think that Diigo is not only for ‘researchers’. Most of us conduct some sort of research whenever we read a news article, shop for an appliance, view photos or videos, or read a blogpost. Although I appreciate the other services, and might occasionally use some of them, I find that Diigo already incorporates and combines MOST of their important features, in a way that is more robust and scalable. Diigo specifically addresses the issue that was mentioned in the introduction of this tech-crunch comparison - mark up the web and make annotations on webpages.

  • When I recently stumbled upon Diigo.com I found the perfect solution for bookmarking and annotating web pages instead of saving them as PDFs or wasting paper and ink by printing them. Diigo.com and Delicious.com work similarly whereby you can annotate, tag, and share bookmarks with other members of the site. The site provides a downloadable toolbar for Firefox, Flock and Internet Explorer web browsers for online browsing and interaction. For other browsers, including Safari, it provides a bookmarklet similar to the toolbar but not quite as feature rich.

      As Mail.app uses WebKit, so something like this may be possible. However: the simple act of 'filing' a message — moving it from one mailbox to another — could be enough to break the reference point upon which a highlight might rely. I wonder how Qu-s handles references to messages that move.
