Hi Maggie
I think Diigo is great and has a lot of educational potential. I have several projects in mind, but the one I am delivering this semester is an essay alternative.
essays have long been criticized as an opportunity for students to plagiarize. An alternative exercise is to ask students to find the best website on a topic and then to annotate it with references to justify their choice. (they are of course banned from using wikipedia). This can then be followed with a moderation of other students work, etc...
Issues which I am coming up with include:
* Diigo terms and conditions bans the use of URLs, yet students may wish to reference through the use of a URL - maybe I am misinterpreting the regulations.
* While I can use a private group for the exercise, maintaining an idea of who has done what is tricky. Thus I have asked the students to register with their student ID number - however, Diigo requires a letter for the first character in the username. What would be most useful is if I could create a class list and log the students in (if they do not already have accounts).. What I would do is give them username of "s" plus ID (s is for student). Their email is their ID@........... and I would initially set their password to their ID - telling them to change it to a memorable secret. Is there an ethical consent issue of signing others in? Is there facility to do it?
* While my institution is happy for applications like Diigo to be used in innovative teaching, it generally likes to host its teaching resources. Is there any possibility of licensing out a tailor made Diigo for different institutions. I imagine such a package would be sold with a license and would be hosted on a server in the institution and would allow group login possibly through some kind of centralized password system. Even public comments would only be visible to users of that institutionally hosted version.
I am sure there are other issues which will come up, but I would welcome feedback on these.

the issue with URLs comes in the terms and conditions see
8. Content/Activity Prohibited.

Maggie suggested changing the email address and then forming a new Diigo account with the original email address. I find that it is easy to change the email address. BUT when I try to create the new account with the old email address I get an error saying that the email address is already in use by another user.
Is it just a matter of waiting for a database to be reset or is there another issue going on here?

I have tried this and it does not work. Even though I have changed the email address on this account, when I try to create a new account with the old email address the system tells me that the email is taken by another user.
