This website examines the Frasier Institute of Canada, it relates to the InnoCentive program Gratton speaks about in his book. They work to solve various problems in Canada and around the world by uniting people from various backgrounds.

I found this article to be very interesting to read. It truly captures the idea that Generation Y is now having to reverse the impacts of capitalist greed on both the global community, as well as the global environment.

Of course an online quiz is no substitute for proper counselling, but this resource can help people to start thinking about whether their work/life balance in working for them or whether they should consider changes so they can get the most from their career. I chose this resource not only because of this week's discussion post topic, but also because of Chapter 6 of The Shift, where a healthy work/life balance is shown to be an essential part of the Crafted Future narrative.

If you go to work every week with the mantra "I hate my job!," this week's blog post is for you! This is the story of Amanda, one of 8 million people who have taken the MAPP career test. Amanda was working in a job she hated -- a retail job in an electronics store.

This website relates to this weeks readings about figuring out what you really want out of your career. Therefore, this career test will help people figure out what kind of trade-offs they can live with. For example, working with people as opposed to working with things.

Interesting article about trends among Generation Y workers

What to learn how to establish a career in this new economy? Look no further than the current generation of young people - that is, those age 20 and younger. To uncover some interesting revelations about the newest generation, Gen Z, I partnered with the third-largest staffing organization in the United States, Randstad US, on a global study analyzing how Gen Z's views of the workplace compared to Gen Y's.

Distributed Proofreaders is a website that anyone can join, relating to the idea of co-creation in Chapter 5. OCR software reads the text of old books. People compare the software's output with the image of the original text to correct errors and formatting. Many languages are represented and many regional or other types of communities exist. This is a great article that relates to Miguel in Gratton's book. Miguel and his colleagues from around the globe are intuitive about the world around them and want to save it! This article is saying that Generation Y want to save the world. They are the most educated generation, understand that global warming is real, and also want to learn and make a difference in the world.

The September 2014 edition of The Canadian Journal of Career Development has excellent articles on trends applicable to our class in general and specifically "The Shift" text. I recommend reading the article "Beyond Green Jobs: Assessing Sustainability Enhancing Career Options".

This website was used by an entrepreneur I know. Basically it is like the marketplace InnoCentive mentioned in Chapter 5 of The Shift, however it is based around logo design. Basically entrepreneurs put out a call or contest for the logo you would like, with an explanation of what its being used for, who the audience is etc. Then graphic designers place in entries. Once the contest is over you choose your favourite one and they get paid the prize. It costs $29 to start a contest and then whatever you are willing to pay for your prize. My friend who used it was very successful, and as soon as I read about InnoCentive it made me think of this! I can image there will be more websites like this in the future

This site takes a different look at work life balance. Although it doesn't address working late hours on personal time, it does offer some interesting ideas.

In "The Shift", Lynda Gratton mentions on page 168 that, "... billions of people are choosing to take control of their working lives and to craft them in a way that resonates with their own values and aspirations." I especially liked the metaphor of weaving different threads into your career fabric.

Lynda Gratton mentions in "The Shift" that in the future we will have to differentiate ourselves from the crowd by creating a body of knowledge and skills to achieve mastery, as well as connecting with others around the world.

Lynda Gratton comments about the future work world of Generation Y- they are a generation that has respect for diversity and human differences, and have grown up educating themselves on climate change and sustainability. This article can build on Gratton's description of Gen Y, as it describes the results of a survey of the attitudes of 546 millenials towards work in their future. The survey results do indeed show that millenials are interested in a work life that supports sustainability and social responsibility, but it adds the differences between male and female Gen Y'ers. The studies find that females are significantly more interested in environmental protection and social responsibility than are most males (more typically interested in profit maximization). While I believe this article may be fairly controversial and polarizing, it's interesting to further study the attitudes of what is my own generation.

I chose this article for my own general curiosity about what research said about online programs, and the pros and cons of its education. Consistent with my own opinions (which are positive because I am enrolled in an online program), I found that the research and opinions given throughout the article lean towards the opportunity that online programming allows Canadian society, and the whole society can benefit from its effects, as it is not limited to age, disability, or learning styles.
