The California K-12 High Speed Network (K12HSN) is offering a comprehensive set of tools to support teaching and learning in California classrooms. This free suite of tools, known as edZone, was developed by the California Dept of Education and currently includes blogging, videoconference scheduling and a file sharing system where educators can upload videos, podcasts, images and documents. EdZone is an excellent tool to share lesson ideas, upload student learning objects, disseminate best practices, and more! EdZone will soon be expanded to include Instant Messaging, Moodle, Wikis, Social Networking, Moodle-an online course management system and other Web 2.0 tools to enhance today's classroom environment. Watch for these new tools in Summer 2008!

This site provides reading materials for students studying the law as it applies to activities in cyberspace. The reading materials include edited cases, statutes, treaties, and law review articles, as well as content written by the individual module authors. Some have likened the study of cyberspace law to trying to board a moving bus. Given the pace of change in this field any attempt at a traditional casebook would largely be outdated before it reached the hands of the students. This site is designed to take advantage of the hypertext media offered by the world wide web by providing reading modules that can be altered or replaced as the law changes.

The study, funded by the Justice Department, found that the percentage of children who reported being physically bullied over the last year had declined from nearly 22% in 2003 to less than 15% in 2008. The percentage reporting they had been assaulted by other youths, including siblings, dropped from 45% to 38.4%. Would have been nice if they offered data on "cyberbullying" too.

Organized around the way middle schoolers use the Internet, the CyberCitz Project provides teaching materials on Internet safety, security and ethics. Children will learn more effectively about digital citizenship including cybersafety, security, and ethics through the moderated kid to kid interaction, the online challenges or "episodes", and parental/educator involvement. Marsali Hancock, iKeepSafe Coalition President, says, "Woogi World allows us to create content which organically combines cybercitzenship education, play, and academic learning in a way that is exciting for kids."

A bullying/cyberbullying bill (similar to the one that passed in California in 2009) became legislation in Massachusetts this week. It requires training of teachers and students, reporting and investigation into cyberbullying incidents by school administrators if the bullying incidents that take place on campus, at school-sponsored events or bullying that affects the school environment.

In this activity, teenagers explore online names by looking at sample e-mail addresses to determine what they can tell about the person who uses the account. After this exploration, teens choose a screen name or e-mail address for themselves as well as decide on personal details to include on a safe online profile.

Many school districts are adopting Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) to educate parents and students about Internet use and issues of online privacy and safety, and seek parental consent for their children's use of the Internet. For example, an AUP may tell parents about the privacy policies of online services with which a school has contracts and students' use of non-contract websites. It may include cautions against children disclosing personal information to websites - such as their full name, home or email address, and telephone number. Or it may tell parents that the school has established classroom email accounts rather than individual accounts if email communication is necessary between students and online services.
