What happens to our digital footprint when we die? In the physical world, a will instructs friends and family what to do with money and assets. But online lives and their impact may not be taken into account.

Digital technology has had a tremendous impact on our lives. Although the Internet and cell phones have been in wide use for only a couple of decades, most of us can hardly remember a time before they existed or imagine how we would function without them. How have the accessibility of these technologies, and the ease with which we are now able to share information, changed the way we communicate? And how can young people in particular better deal with the issues that might arise from being able to communicate so quickly and easily with so many people? This activity will help students recognize and address these issues. Note: Registration for this site may be required, but it's simple and easy.

Otumoetai Intermediate School will pioneer a first in New Zealand education by allowing students to use cellphones as part of everyday learning. Students will be able to use phones to assist with projects, with the added ability to speak up if they see other students behaving inappropriately in the playground.

Chatroulette allows people around the world to see each other and chat via text or audio. Users can click "next" to skip from person to person, never knowing what the next image will be. But this unregulated freedom presents serious safety concerns for children. Violent and sexually charged images frequently turn up on Chatroulette, according to Sam Anderson, who chronicled his experience on the site for New York Magazine.

GR 5-8 students will develop media literacy skills as they learn about the techniques of propaganda in sales commercials. They will brainstorm a new product and use Frames4 (animation and digital storytelling software) to create a 30-second commercial using at least two propaganda techniques.

Children will learn more effectively about digital citizenship including cybersafety, security, and ethics through the moderated kid to kid interaction, the online challenges or "episodes", and parental/educator involvement. With the proliferation of cell phones in our society and the onslaught of new ways to use your cell phones, consumers are becoming increasingly confused about setting boundaries. We hope our guidelines will help people better avoid and recognize "cell phone faux-pas". The guidelines are based on comprehensive annual surveys on cell phone etiquette and behavior dating back to 2000.

b>Inquiry on the Internet: Evaluating Web Pages for a Class Collection
In this lesson plan, students explore a class inquiry project, collecting Web-based resources that can be used for further study during the course of the class or for more in-depth projects. Students use Internet search engines and Web analysis checklists and questions to find and evaluate online resources then write annotations that explain how and why the items they have found will be valuable to the class.

Naming in a Digital World: Creating a Safe Persona on the Internet. Students will:
1.Explore naming conventions in digital and non-digital settings.
2. Analyze the underlying connotations of names.
3. Analyze the ways that name-giving practices vary from one culture to another.
4. Synthesize their investigation by choosing and explaining specific names to represent themselves online.

Excellent educator-created video offers students an introduction to the concepts of "managing personal identity online" and "digital footprint" and what it will mean in the course of their lifetime. Particularly noteworthy are the employer comments regarding what they learn from reading what job candidates have posted online and how it affects them both negatively and positively in considering the person for a job.

How will you prove your students meet NCLB requirements to be "technology literate" by 8th Grade?
