This free five-part video series on Cybersafety & Internet Awareness for Parents & Educators was produced by the Orange County Office of Education [California] and is hosted by Mark Wagner & Victor Guthrie. It includes a clip with Katie Canton of Web Wise Kids, telling the story of her experience with a man she fell in love with in a chatroom, only to later discover that he was an online predator.

The ConnectSafely forum is co-directed by cybersafety experts, Larry Magid and Anne Collier. It provides opportunities for parents, teens and experts to discuss safe socializing on the fixed and mobile web.

The California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP Region IV) is a state-funded agency that has been a leader in cybersafety education for the California public school system since 1997. The Center for Safe Schools in Pennsylvania has produced this 22-minute Internet safety video: Protecting Kids Online. This Internet safety resource speaks to parents and caregivers on topics from understanding the serious repercussion of cyber-bullying to learning how to safeguard our children from online predators. There are many first-person accounts and real stories told here that would be helpful in generating a discussion.

Discussion between parents and children is the best way to create trust. But computer use especially by new users can not be expected to be "private" from their parents. Filtering has its place, but should be used to generate trust and not access blame or perjorative measures. Students will always find a way to circumvent filtering and internet restriction. School bullying is nothing new. But since Prince's suicide, it has taken on a much darker significance, one that prosecutors are taking seriously. On Monday, criminal charges were brought against the nine students who allegedly led the harassment. And parents and school administrators in South Hadley are under intense scrutiny as well. They face tough questions about what happened to Prince and whether they could have done more to prevent her death.

Wednesday "Good Morning America" and Internet safety expert Parry Aftab of WiredSafety.com brought parents and kids together to discuss a new, possibly dangerous phenomenon called "sexting" -- teens sharing with friends sexually explicit images or messages via cell phones.

Despite their convenience, cell phones can pose a threat to teens' safety - physically, mentally, and emotionally. When placed in the hands of an adolescent without being accompanied with several words of wisdom, cell phones have been the root cause of both physical harm and horrific embarrassment to the child. Parents should consider laying several ground rules about how and when the cell phone should be used

Parent education on what digital citizenship means.

Students and parents are demanding Metro Nashville's public schools stop blocking access to Web sites about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. They complained to the American Civil Liberties Union, which on Wednesday gave Metro and Knox County schools an April 29 deadline to announce plans to open access to the non-sexual sites. A letter to the districts threatened lawsuits if they don't comply.
