A PEW research study conducted in 2009 and released this week (May 27, 2010) shows that young people are actually more mindful of online reputation and guard their personal information more than older ones. Among age groups, internet users ages 30-49 are the most likely to worry about the amount of information available online: 38% say they are concerned, compared with 30% of users ages 18-29, 31% of those ages 50-64 and 23% of those 65 and older.

The online study of 1,454 adolescents ages 12-17, conducted by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, tried to gauge the differences between school bullying and cyberbullying and found that young people underestimate the bullying of their peers, particularly when it takes place online.

In WEBONAUTS INTERNET ACADEMY, kids (age 8-10) explore what it means to be a citizen in a web-infused‚ information-rich world. Participants play through a series of 12 missions adhering to the Webonauts' motto: "Observe, Respect, Contribute." Each mission helps children understand critical online safety issues, such as the importance of protecting passwords and maintaining privacy settings. Other missions teach how to differentiate between credible and non-credible sources of information and how to react to bullying. Note: this resource was developed as a partnership project between PBS KIDS and Common Sense Media.

Great example of a school district's digital citizenship scope and sequence. The plan includes expectations for elementary, middle, high school students, teachers and parents.

In response to the recent rash of teen suicides related to cyberbullying, Perez Hilton appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week to say that he will be ending his crusade to bully people online. Hilton made a name for himself as a celebrity blogger, making nasty comments about celebrities and attempting to "out" gay and lesbian stars. See his YouTube video for the announcement. http://bit.ly/perezhilton_bullying The message is a bit rambling but he's definitely someone who influences teen behavior.

In the wake of a Rutger University student's suicide, researchers who study youth and the Internet say schools need to do a better job of teaching kids the basics of digital citizenship.

This model program for "restorative justice" is used by trained 8th grader facilitators at Del Mar Middle School to handle school incidents that would previously have been grounds for student suspensions. Cyberbullying is included in the restorative justice program. Students make amends for their actions, learn from their mistakes and become part of the solution, rather than the problem.

This week begins National Bullying Prevention Month, and CNN's "AC360°" along with Cartoon Network, PEOPLE Magazine and CNN.com are exploring the problem of bullying and cyberbullying in depth.
