Researchers present the facts and debunk myths about online victimization - 0 views

  •
Links to video/audio and full transcripts of a children's online safety panel [May 2007] with Danah Boyd, David Finkelhor, Amanda Lenhart and Michelle Yberra. This was the first time these prominent academics have appeared together to present their research, which, altogether, represents volumes of data on the state of online youth victimization and online youth habits. The 34-page transcript/download is worth the read. You'll also want to download a copy of David Finkelhor's Just the Facts: Getting It Right , which he developed so that presenters would accurately represent his research findings. In this document, he coaches you explicitly on how to report the facts. Very valuable, since reports on incidences of online victimization are so inconsistent and so many people misinterpret the findings!

Online, 'trust no one' - 2 views

  • The professor, Gloria Gadsden, thought she was only confiding sarcastically in her friends. But she told Inside Higher Ed she believed Facebook altered her settings so she had unknowingly allowed the "friends" of her online "friends" to read her postings.
  •
As far as high-tech misunderstandings go, this was a big one. An East Stroudsburg University sociology professor made two provocative posts on her Facebook page, according to the Web site Inside Higher Ed: "Does anyone know where to find a very discreet hitman? Yes, it's been that kind of day" and, "had a good day today, DIDN'T want to kill even one student :-) Now Friday was a different story."

ChatRoulette is a new website that connects you face to face with Internet users around the world. When you go to the site and hit Play your webcam turns on and you're connected to another person. Most times you'll hit Next within a few seconds and be connected to someone else. Sometimes people stop to chat. Basically, instead of surfing the web, you're surfing people.

Educational value: There is the rare chance to try out a newly learned language wth someone from another country or learn new things by meeting random folks around the world, but this site is such a lawless environment that it's too risky to really be educational at this point.
