      My unit centers around Connectivism principles that include diversity of opinions, nurturing and maintaining connections, currency, and the importance of decision making. This is accomplished around three main strategies, which include group collaboration and discussion, independent research and sharing of resources, and implementation and use of web 2.0 technologies. Content is designed to create an environment for learners to share experiences, resources and best practice methods. Group discussion and sharing of resources allows for expansion of content and also supports the Connectivism priniples of the unit. A variety of technology is used to address objectives and principles. Class is delivered through a wiki, which based on evaluation done earlier this semester supports most connectivism principles. Also a variety of Web 2.0 technologies are used including Social Bookmarking to provide for resources as well as expand resources through student use. Assessment is done through peer evaluation as well as submission of products to instructor for instructor evaluation.

      Matt It was a great pleasure going through your unit. The introduction and use of a consistent structure for all the lessons is great. The links and directions to activities and assignments is well though out and focused. The content is delivered such that connectivism theory forms a base which informs unit goal and objectives. The learners connect with one another, use platforms which afford them opportunity to connect and interact with resources in a connective nature. Wiki, diigo and facebook are the platforms that you have cleverly woven together to create a rich learning environment which is not only connective but also collaborative; a hallmark of constructivism. Assessment is both instructor and peer-to-peer. Great job!

      One weakness I think of the unit is in Lesson 2 where students create their own wiki. I think that this area might have been stronger had I included more examples of wikis to go from as well as a stronger explanation of wikis and their benefits rather than have the learners pull this information from outside sources. A second weakness comes out of this unit as well and that is on assessment. I think that the assignemnt would be easier to understand and to develop had I created a rubric with stronger guidelines for the learners to follow that would be the basis of my assessment. I always provide rubrics for my students ahead of time in my classes and I don't know why I didn't think to add one here. It would go a long way in clarifying the assignment and providing a guideline from which to work with. Finally, I feel the facebook lesson is a little weak in terms of how I want the students to be involved and interacted. I had this really good idea in my head on how I wanted it to look. Almost like an alternate support site for the unit that is overseen and run by the learners. For some reason I had a difficult time translating that from my idea to my lesson. This is an area where I would spend sometime reassessing how I organize and present, before implementing the lesson in the future.

      Thanks Christie. They are mainly just check for completion based upon joining the networks and particpating in the searches. If they submit the podcut then they completed the assignment correctly.

    My Review Nice embedded asynchronous CMC; nice use of an introductions section (good for online classes); also uses wiki's and facebook. Perhaps student interaction could benefit from Skype or synchronous CMC based support. Excellent resources, and one of the stronger elements of the unit! Built-in search, embedded CMC and a variety of programs (listed above) all culminate to provide wonderful learner resources. A nice variety of collaboration with discussions and use of the three different programs listed above. A nice variety of meaningful assignments without exposing learners to too much in too little time. Good. As noted above three different platforms as well as discussion to publish on. Wiki and Diigo providing lasting published work and facebook providing more transitory publishing appeals to a wide range of learners. Nice self and peer assessment. Looks good, no need to call in the lawyers Though I do love wetpaint Wiki the ads on the site can be less than desirable (they keep adding more). I suggest Google Sites for the same easy navigation and embedding but no ads. That said nice and easy to navigate page

      The three most important strategies of PLE in my unit are first the students manage their own content. The students are responsible for gathering and posting all information they find or learn about their event. When student are able to manage their own learning it becomes more meaningful, which translates to permanent learning. Another strategy I used was to have the students assess their own learning through journaling. The students did their own journaling through Google Forms, rather than blogs because district policies. No blogs are allowed to be unblocked. The nice thing about Google Forms is that it puts the information in an easy ormat to grade. Finally students are able to communicate with others about their learning through commenting on other's events. This enable students to critique others events and add hints or ideas of their own. My unit's guiding Connectivism principal is the idea that learning is the connecting different information sources. Students are encouraged to look for information for their event on other sites, then post the link both on the wiki and on Delicious. Additionally, as this site will hopefully be in use for the following year's science olympiad team, they will have a chance to add to knowledge by creating their own video to share how they created a winning entry. The students can build upon other's knowledge.

      Geneva, The topic of your unit plan is timely and an exciting one: "Science Olympiad". The technology used (wiki) is very user friendly and important in connectivism. Strategies and instructions are also clear. However, the learning objectives need to be stated clearly at the outset and should match each strategy. The lessons are well sequenced. So are the activities and assessment rubrics. However, the site navigation is not easy. For example, you need to change settings so that when you click on a link it opens in a new window. That way, you don't lose your previous page. Principles of connectivism (collaboration, network learning and sharing) are key ingredients in your unit. You did a remarkable job integrating those principles in each lesson. Great job!

      One of the weakness in my unit is the accessibilty at my school of technology. This whole unit rests on two assumptions: my students will have sufficent time in the computer lab, and two that my wiki will not be blocked by the filter. Unfortunately, when going to implement this unit I found that my assumption were incorrect. First, I have not been able to get the kids into the computer lab because of new district mandated on-line testing. Second, a new web filter was installed a few weeks ago. It blocks all wikis and blogs, which are essential to my project. I put in for a reconsideration of website blockage but was told it would be a month or more before the committe gets together to review it. Another weakness in the unit is, as Moussa pointed out, the site is difficult to navigate. I am used to being able to create smooth navigation with my web building software, but I am not yet familiar with the wiki so the navigation is not as clean as I would like it. The final weakness is that I did not provide any clear how to directions for my students on how to post, research, or how to add links. That will need to be fixed before I implement it in the classroom.

      The unit is very extensive and would be very engaging for middle school science students. The students are given a variety of choices to guide their learning as they create their own content within the collaborative wiki setting. This setting helps students work collaboratively and supports connectivity and constructivism. I feel that there are some steps/instructions missing for this unit. Perhaps these are given face-to-face with the students before they begin, but it would be useful to post them on the wiki for students to refer back to as they work. The evaluation rubrics are clear and help students develop and build their projects and they make use of Google Forms which is so easy to use and organizes answers for the instructor. You might consider creating an example event so that students know what is expected of them when they do their own events. Excellent use of Google Forms (which I love!). I never thought about using it as a journal entry form, I will definitely be using this with my 6th graders! I would love to see how this unit turns out with students! Good luck!

      Okay, thank you for the opportunity to answer the questions now. My three main NLE PLE strategies are: 1. Teamwork - using Elluminate to meet as a team in real time, using blog and voicethread for feedback, and using wiki page sites for team creation of product and presentation 2. Research - using Diigo and Delicious to share relevant discoveries and share information- at the same time creating PLE for study 3. Over-all strategy is to teach the principles by demonstrating how within the study and classwork so that they have an effective and powerful model and know how to integrate the technologies into their own lesson developments. The asessments are collaborative in nature and include self and peer assessments with an opportunity to revise work throughout. This allows for maximum learning.

      Three weaknesses: 1. Some data cannot be stored on the class wiki and will have to be housed separately and shared with students by email, like grades, contact information and so on. An advantage of a CMS is that you can track your personal progress a little easier because not everything is public information. Also the class wiki site could be altered by students or information possibly lost. 2. I needed to develop more evaluation rubrics - some for peer evaluation and map out how that would work a little more clearly. 3. I think 3 general synchronous class meetings would be helpful to clear up questions and demonstrate how to use technologies for those who need a visual example and the opportunity to ask questions in the learning process. (I only developed an example of the first meeting). These would be required (points given for attendance) but recorded for those who miss for unavoidable reasons.

      The first connectivism principle that my Unit plan includes is the opportunity for learners, in this case, in-service teachers to connect with each other with ease using different software applications. More specifically, when they use wiki to collaborate contents is a good strategy to keep learners connected. Another strategy is that building online libraries, using Delicious for example, help learners share useful materials without having to buy books. Learners become actively engaged in social bookmarking process as distributed learning and they become socially networked via social network sites to connect to relevant human learning resources. Next, when they write their lesson plan and use World to visualize their ideas, it is a core principle of connectivism which emphasizes that "utilizing visualization to examine data, such as tag clouds or Wordle Arts" is produces the "ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts." Finally, when learners review each other's lesson plan in groups, this allows them to make contributions to learning content and engage in collaborative and community learning activities for the first principle of connectivism sates: "Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions."

      Unit Presentation: I designed this 6-week unit plan to give in-service teachers more opportunities to diversify their lesson delivery and content strategies for a number of reasons. First, commercial materials are very scarce in many schools For example, in my own country there is a ratio of one book for 30 students. The unit also aims at strengthening collaboration between teachers and students for a better outcome. I have included multiple technologies( VoiceThread, Wiki, and Delicious) to allow for connectivism principles to be used throughout the whole six weeks that the training will last. The unit comprises three lessons, one leson for every two weeks, a training outline, and groups space. Lesson 1 is essentially focused on Introductions of students and orientation. During this first lesson all students are required the mandatory training for each tool to be used during the training. Reading and discussions start with Lesson 2. Lesson 3 concludes with a survey at the end of training to ensure that this kind of training is/isn't worthwhile in the future.

      My Unit plan is hypothetical and as such may not be implemented in any context. However, it can fit in many teaching and learning situations. For me, the most challenging aspect in putting together this unit plan is to marry the objectives with strategies and link everything to connectivism principles. I am not sure I have married each goal with an appropriate strategy and this may constitute another handicap. Finally, the course format that I chose may pose difficulty for technology low-skill ability learners in Africa. After I submitted, I thought a hybrid format could solve the problem. Otherwise, everything looks fine for me although I cannot see my back...

      Your unit does an excellent job supporting learning network environment in terms of content. Resources are provided each step of the way. Additionally, the wiki environment you have created supports the learning network environment concept. Groupspaces are provided for collaboration as well as discussions that encourage network learning through sharing and discussion of ideas. There are a variety of web 2.0 tools supported and used throughout the unit. The first lesson requires students to go through tutorials and gain a familiarity with these tools for use in there lessons throughout the unit. There is also a variety of discussion that is encouraged using the web 2.0 tool Voice Thread. Strategies are constructivist based and require students to build there own knowledge and demonstrate their learning and understanding. Examples include building your own information database by using social bookmarking, a research paper designed to demonstrate their understanding of network learning, and finally the group lesson plan and presentation using powerpoint. These technologies incorporated lend themselves to the strategies used, which include individual work, group collaboration, peer review, and group discussion. Rubrics and guidelines are clearly stated for what is expected of each lesson. Also there is an end of unit survey which allows the student to reflect back on how much they actually learn as well as provide information to the instructor that can be used in future implementations of the unit. Moussa, overall I thought the unit was very well though out and designed. It applied constructivist principles, multiple technologies, is very simple to follow and easy to understand. I also really like the graphic on the home page that introduces ICT. Well done!

    The unit is well aligned with Connectivisim principles. The fact that teachers are expected to become familiar with the web 2.0 tools and learn to apply them is very powerful. It is not enought ot just "being familiar" with web 2.0 tools, but being able to apply them in a teaching environment. The objectives and lessons are clear. I didn't notice any rubrics though. Also, you may want to use Google Forms, rather than survey monkey, the teachers will get a good idea of how to use Google Forms in their classrooms. Great Job! Geneva

      I really tried to make these lessons collaborativev and project-based. The success of the learners relies heavily on discussion between the learners and their collaboration as a group and a class. Although I chose some technologies that support the facilitation of discussion and group work (Google Groups and wiki) I feel that I could have chosen some that were more appropriate, such as Diigo annotation. I would also like participants to locate resources to share through Delicious. I was/am worried about overwhelming teachers that have little experience with different tools that I might overwhelm them. Perhaps if this was a more extensive unit I could introduce some of the other tools. The goal of the unit was for teachers to experience the connective nature of social media technologies so that they may better integrate them into their own classroom. Working together they would have the opportunity to create lessons through distributed learning on distributed learning for use in their own classrooms. I hope that I am able to use this unit with teachers in my school to help them find new ways to integrate technology into their lessons. I think that the assessment/evaluation was also a good model of how teachers could create their own when evaluating their own studenst.

      I would have liked to include more NLE tools such as Diigo, Delicious, or Facebook. I didn't include one of these tools because I didn't want the learners to become overwhlemed with multiple sites. I don't have any experience with Google Groups, but I decided to use it as an NLE tool in this unit. The decision was based on keeping Google tools integrated for ease of use. I think that perhaps using Diigo, or another networking site, might have been a better choice for this unit. I think my unit could be utliize more connectivist strategies. It was difficult finding a balance between giving the learners the background they needed to complete the unit and the right amount of connectivist experiences. I would like some ideas on how to make the unit align more to connectivist strategies.

      Nasreen, I am sorry I did not share my ideas with you after I reviewed your unit plan. I must apologize for keeping you waiting. The activities in your unit plan are very well balanced and include a variety of techniques for their completion. Nice job! The technology you used (Google Doc) is very user-friendly especially for younger learners (6th graders, for example). You managed to use Google site to host both the course and student discussion. That was great! Navigation is also easy. The main strengths of your unit are the variety of activities planned. These activities also focus on students, which is great. Instructions are crystal clear and focused on connectivism. Titles are captivating and lessons are well sequenced containing different material formats. Overall, the unit has been very well planned, the objectives are also met, and I am confident the unit can be implemented in many contexts. Congratulations!

      Wahid. It was a great pleasure for me to go through your unit. It is well planned and and designed, not only for the learning content but also the site design itself. Color strategy, space use and allocation are excellent. I am sure your learners will find your site to be user friendly and appealing to engage in, and explore the great activities that you have set out for them. Navigating your site is a breeze and appropriate for the age of your learners (6th grade) and most probably that is why you have chosen your links for efficiency since kids can easily get confused if their learning environment is complex. Your site makes good use of webcasts, wikis, Googlesites, etc to enhance dialogue and most importantly to enhance connectivism. Discussions create conducive collaborative environment which has helped to enhance constructivist theory of learning. The instructor evaluates learners progress through assignment submissions.       Content supports organizational learning network environment in several ways. Site creates a commmunity for learners to participate in and engage with one another. Discussion areas provide for interaction and collaboration. Google websites assignemnt allows for sharing and interaction so that learners may build off of each other's knowledge. A variety of technologies are integrated including the use of webcasts, wikis, googlesites, discussion areas, YouTUbe resources, etc. There is also a good use of instructional strategies to build off of these technologies that includes individual work, playing with and exploring different technologies as well as creating products of their own which builds on constructivist learning theories. Peer review, interaction and collaboration is incorporated through discussion and sharing of assignements for comment and review. Evaluations are done through assignment submission to instructor, peer review feedback, and I also believe self-reflection is incorporated as well. Nasreen, overall I really enjoyed going through your unit. I feel it hits on all of the required areas and additionally is very simple to navigate and easy to understand. Assignment instructions and guidelines are thorough and simple enough to avoid confusion. It also is asthetically pleasing and provides for a very relaxing atmosphere visually. Nice job!

    I would have added more Web 2.0 tools for the teachers to explore, but I was concerned about the amount of time they would have to spend outside of class and I do hear a lot of complaining about that after any kind of workshop or training that we have had, unless it was something the teachers asked for. I probably should have added more though. I wasn't sure about the peer evaluation rubric for the lesson plan. I don't think it gives enough about the details to look for in the lesson plan. I'm not sure that my unit explains enough about the Connectism Theory that it is based upon. And I can't find some of the articles that I quoted. One of the articles I read won't let me get back to the article; it says I have to subscribe.

      The project definition page gives clear objectives and goals aligned to the standards. The unit is very organized and well written with attention paid to detail and clearly informing the participants. Some Web 2.0 tools are included in this unit including wiki capabilities and embedded media. I noticed that you had a Google Groups link on the sidebar, but you did not include Google Groups as a part of your unit. Google Sites as a wiki is acceptable for collaboration and discussion. You might consider creating pages for group work space or using some other social media tool. The links and forms are very useful to the learners. Evaluation rubrics are clear and well defined so that the participants can construct their projects successfully. Overall a well developed unit for students to understand news bias and how to conduct a video interview. A minor suggestion is to make your font consistent through the unit. The first page uses every large font, and the following pages do not have consistent font. There are also some pages that use different styles of font. The look and flow of the pages will be improved with the same size font throughout. Otherwise the rest of the unit looks and feels very professional and is organized well. You might also consider including some other tools that can help support connectivism. You might have students use Diigo to comment on or annotate links, they could use Delicious to find resources to share with their peers, or they could create their own wiki as their group space. I hope that you have an opportunity to use this unit, it sounds like a fun learning experience for the participants!

      My unit just barely made it in my opinion with Connectivism if I understand the theory correctly. One thing that I did fail to integrate in this unit is group activities that led to continued prospectives for learning. One of the things that I did incorporate, however, were peer reviews and response questions on specific assignments. Although mediocre compared to some other tools, the peer review documents I used as assessment in this unit come in two formats. One was reviewing the various information in papers on the various learning theories,which exposes the adult learners to multiple perspectives on similar topics which may increase their learning and approaches to a specific topic/subject. The other document was used to determine if learning had occurred based on student samples. This is quite distinctive because it allows for the adult learner to learn information and perspectives from the students and not fellow colleagues. I have also requested that the adult learners peer review various projects in the module. Not only does this expose the adult learners to the various individual interpretations of the assignments, it also exposes them to the various usages of certain tools. I have also required that the adult learners use Twitter,blogs, wikis,etc to find useful information for papers. Although these are not professional sources, it again exposes the adult learners to the various interpretations of topics, concepts, etc from various individuals in society, not just colleagues. Although some of the baby boomers,etc may resist technology, I guess it still doesnt change that we live in a society that is built around a common factor, technology.       Although my unit is focused on Higher Education professionals, I feel that I failed to provide a strong foundation for the unit. Even though some Higher Education professionals have PhDs,EdDs,etc, when it comes to effectively utilizing technology, you must provide the basics as if the professionals were a "blank slate." Although I expected the professionals to have a high level of computer literacy, there may be some professionals who don't have a high literacy for computers, but may still like to use web-based tools. Access to numerous tutorials for the various accounts I required to be created would have been reasonable since the adult learners would have to effectively use these tools to create the various products in the module. If you can't effectively use the tools, I shouldnt expect for effective products to be created either. Another weakness was the time to complete the assignments. If it takes us students two weeks to complete certain assignments that we have a reasonable background in, for individuals just beginning, two weeks wouldn't be enough to complete all the assignments adequately in each module. The assignments could be rushed, and the assessments may not reflect the true potential of the adult learner. Finally, I feel that I asked the adult learners to utilize too many potentially difficult technology and web-based tools during their stages of learning that could produce many moments of frustration and confusion.

      Hi, here's my peer review. Have a great holiday season. Content: A very well laid out unit. It is very obvious there was a large amount of work getting this done. It was worth the effort. The unit is very complete and ready to use. The three lessons start at introduction stage a progress to greater challenges. I think this is important to keep the learners engaged. The focus is strong on working with the Web 2.0 tools to acquire broad experience in the very diverse mixture used in the unit. Collaboration, and the learning it provides, is used in stealth mode through the peer reviews on almost all assignments. Goals and objective were clearly presented and the unit assignments are designed to reach those objectives. Technology: Wow! I counted seven different tools. The most interesting was Camtasia and Prezi. The use of the tools is smoothly integrated into the lessons with the more challenging at the later part of the unit. This was consistent with the units objective of starting "slow" and growing into "faster". I had a student tell me once he had learned a lot in the class, but didn't realize it until the end. This unit makes me think how much, and there is a lot of good stuff, the learners will get, but they won't know it till after. Instructional Strategies: The peer review used at several points in the unit ensures the learners share thoughts and suggestions. The learners for the most part, do their work and turn it in. I'm thinking that unseen will be the instructor's feed back to increase the learning experience. Assessment: Very complete for all assignments. The use of the complete rubrics lets the learners know what is expected. Reflection: This is a very complete unit. It is obvious a lot of work and thought went into the effort. The structure is logical and flows easily from one lesson to the next with more and more challenging assignments. Great Job!

      Hi Mr. Fitzpatrick, Thank you for your elaborate evaluation. It did take a while...lol. I agree with you with the feedback. As I was reviewing the lesson, I feel like most of the assignments were just a typical turn in requirement. I think I lost focus on the collaboration and was more concerned about the tools they were using to turn them in. I sort of reverted to the old attachment and send it to me in email. What I could have done was incorporate a twitter group, had all the students subscribe to it, place their assignments in google docs and provide a link in google docs, place the link on twitter, with a hashtag, have each person review two peers and provide feedback using maybe a youtube video or something. I think I started getting burned out in the end..lol. Again thanks for your reflection. ;) Good luck with the rest of the semester. Mary

      |ulie, here's my peer review. Have a great holiday season. Content: Introduction explains Networked Learning Environments and does an excellent job of setting the foundation for the unit. When you state, "It is about the learning that takes place in a vibrant community of people and resources." it sets up the entire unit. The collaboration based learning supports connectivism concepts on several levels. For example, diversity of opinions, learning process of pulling together different Web 2.0 tools, identifying the relationships/connections between the tools, all relate to connectivisim. Good use of graphics and the embedding of YouTube video. It sets the example of using the various tools provided by Web2.0, and the multimedia helps keep the learners awake too. Technology: Wiki, Bloggers, Delicious, Facebook, iGoogle. An excellent diversity in tools showing the unit results in a sound PLE. Instructional Strategies: I tend to think the use of teamwork (collaboration in education) always results in a stronger solution than individual works. The unit is strong on collaboration and communication, including the reflection and sharing. Assessment: Not strong on assessment (I don't think any of us where) . The strongest assessment is from the peer reviews, informal and formal. What others think and share about our work is a great learning process. The unit has this in many locations. Unfortunately, it is difficult to measure and put on a rubric. The reflection goal is a great way for learner to realize how much they have learned - and what they have learned. In teaching computers for several years I have found the students get strength in self confidence if they know what they know. The reflection goal will do that, or rather it will have them do it for themselves (hey, another connectivism and constructivism concept!) In Lesson One, you incorporated Twitter for discussions. Group Discussions help create a connectivist structure to learning by allowing students to collaborate. You also had students create an iGoogle account, which allows them to create a central location for all of the tools required in the unit. A group blogger was also incorporated into the lesson. Students are asked to share the blog with the instructor and reflect what they learned, but it seemed the reflections were more individual than group. Your content on Dental Materials was well formed and you provided a lot of information, in very nice powerpoint presentations. It showed you put a lot of work into your unit. I feel you could have provided more assessment, but personal reflection is always a good form of assessment.       This NLE has two main goals: first to softly teach NLE skills such as wiki, Delicious and Blogging so that teachers will be comfortable with these skills and understand their use for teaching. Second to use NLE applications to collaborate in designing a new Internet Safety Curriculum for our high school students. The three manin connectivism priciples used in this project are 1) that learning rests in the diversity of opinions. A group of teachers will collaborate together sharing their knowledge, research and personal opinion. 2) The ability to nurture and maintain connections. Many times teachers get into their classrooms and operate independantly. This project allows for teachers and administrators to work together toward a common goal and to solve a school wide issue. The third connectivism principal addressed in this project is decision making is a learning process itself. Working as a team to decide what material is appropriate and what activities will work the best to teach Internet safety skills.

      One weakness of this unit is that it was not tested by faculty. The faculty recruited did not complete the test prior to when it needed to be posted. Second, the assessment is difficult to create. The real assessment of how well the curriculum is designed will be what the students take away from the Internet Safety lessons. This project does not get quite that far in the development process. I should have added a student assessment section to the plan.     Nice Job Dan: My review First off an interesting topic which I feel will be a good challenge and of interest to the middle school audience. Primarily asynchronous CMC based. A nice amount of resources for students I love the How to sections with the grouping section in-between. Good use of collaboration and group as well as individual work (with an emphasis on the former). Catchy section names to boot (which help appeal to target learners). Amazing. As noted above the planning via calendar is superb (this is the strongest feature of this unit I feel). Wiki provides a good outlet for student based publishing and good connectivist support . It might be nice to have future students build on what current students produce in an active manner. I still feel team blogs need more detailed guidance as often folks just patch the torch. Perhaps make them more detailed with specific goals and swap out members responsible for different sections. Assessment clearly stated and detailed. Nice detailed rubrics for all to see. Includes both peer and instructor evaluation. One of the nicer layouts I have seen! Easy to navigate and pleasing to the eye. Not much to say here except maybe change the pictures on front page to key in more with the bias component (maybe different views of the same story?).\

      Content; Overall the content focuses on creating useful and aesthetically pleasing virtual learning objects. language skills will progress though naturalistic engagement in the project (a number of different forms of communication including brainstorming, programming and presenting using different thematically connected language skills). Considering the 2 leels of learning please see my notes on technology below. Technology; The project uses collaborative wiki technology as well as Second life which, being a persistent online world with the ability to embed traditional text based CMC far outweighs many other formats in terms of providing a large variety of interaction methods (see answer to question 2 above). Furthermore the lesson revolves around creating virtual learning object will will also be used by future generations of learners as well as the constructors themselves. Thus we have published student work which contributes to learning and the learning of future students. Instructional Strategies; More linked to socio-cognitivism than connectivism (sorry i still cannot base pedagogy on something which I dont feel has gained a theory level of backing. There is no empirical evidence for connectivism and basing pedagogy on it would only serve to potentially hurt learners). Again we have a group created learning object project here which contibute to learning in their creation and finished project , working on 2 levels. Assessment. Assessment is peer, self and instructor based with a rather heavy weighting to peer based opposed to most classes. Additionally there is an added macro level element of assessment in that future generations of students will also be interacting with and using current student Second Life virtual classroom object creations. This I feel ads a nice level as students' object will be around for the remainder of the class and long after they are gone thus inspiring them to do their best.

      Overall I would say the weakness in my unit would be given the short amount of time students have to compete it (roughly 1 month) I am not 100% sure they will be able to do this. Naturally I would need to pilot it and be flexible. In terms of language learning, I use a more communicative exposure method. R. Jones publishes a lot on this in interaction research and my own research has found online game mediums to be more linguistically interactive than traditional CMC. Perhpahs my unit would benefit from some direct language instruction, however I would need to base this off of an initial needs assessment done by students undertaking the project.

      Content definteily supports organizaiton learning network environments. Site provides for group collaboration and activity through group activities and use of 2nd life. Google site format lends itself to network learning and the content itself, second life, is most definitely network learning. Integrated technologies include tutorials on how to use second life, second life itself, wordle, and the google site that hosts the unit. I think second life itself is the strongest integrated technology and really stands on its own considering its abilities to allow people to connect in such a unique, virtual manner. Instructional strategies include individual assignemnts to familiarize with second life and then group collaboration to design a classroom and develop a presentation. Core of the project is focused on gropu collaboration as it should using the second lfie technology. Unit provides for peer review and evaluation of group members as well as instructor review of individual and group submission of artifacts and products. Bodi, I think this is an excellent use of network learning environments. I like that you use a new and budding technology in googlsites and that you are instructing learners on how to create a virtual classroom within second life. If this does not highlight connectivism and constructivism then I have completely misunderstood the definitions of the two. Your site is very easy to navigate and understand. All assignments are very clear and provide for little opportunity of misunderstanding or confusion. I would be very intersted in participating a learning environment such as this. Great job!

The topic of your unit is timely and well chosen to fit an EFL context such as the one you chose (Japan). The objectives are well stated at the forefront. The tutorials are great too because they build a good basis for student understanding of Second Life. Good job! The technology is very popular and well liked by students, so it helps motivate learning. Your unit is very well planned and designed. The activities are doable and motivating. Navigation is also easy. Maybe including a timeline would help students meet. The connectivism principle of collaboration, sharing, evaluation as well as peer review are all embedded nicely in your unit. Like you said, one major problem might be the relatively short time you chose to allocate to this unit (1 month). Overall, I enjoyed reading your unit and walking through the tutorials.       The unit has very clear goals and objectives that support connectivist learning for both the participants and the students of the participants. It will directly impact classroom teaching to incorporate a strong Web 2.0 tool (virtual space within Second Life). The lessons support learners using tutorials and instructions that are clear well developed for the appropriate audience. The use of Wordle is great to show connectivity between concept ideas and is fun and creative! How cool that group work, discussions, and presentations can all be done in Second Life as if it were an actual classroom! I really need to get involved in learning more about SL! Thanks for showing me some of the educational application in your unit and how it seems to be a great virtual space that integrates connectivism and constructivism with many Web 2.0 tools! The evaluation rubric of the presentations is clear and focused. You might consider using Google Docs Forms so that participants can submit their answers which will directly embed them in a spreadsheet for you. Participants also have the opportunity to reflect on learning and their group members. Great job Bodi!

I think one thing the government should do is make all these tools that will be the foundation of our interaction as a society able to be accessed. This would require some work, but Smartphones have become more than just a tool for everyday conversation, it is now a tool for educators, CEOs,etc.

      Google wave would not be embedded or added to a CMS. Rather, Wave could be the CMS itself. More plugin gadgets will be required for the admin requirements but the rest is already there. SAAS is releasing a competing product next February. There will be many such applications soon. The NAU committee should go open source and save the small fortune spent on subscription services. Happy to assist if you need me. I served on the Technology Taskforce at TUSD (2nd largest district in the State) last year.

      Amber, you might like using Posterous.com which allows posting right from your browser to "all" your online accounts with one click, including Flickr! Check it out. Very handy I'm finding. I locate something worth posting and with one button in my firefox browser, I can post to twitter, facebook, flikr, my blogs, EVERYWHERE. It's really powerful I think.

      How do you mean limited accesibility? I found that I could access our 647 wetpaint site from more access points than my Vista account. I liked the option of being able to access quite easily through my phone and also to monitor through my iGoogle PLE. Are you speaking in terms of difficult to access from a CMS?

      Hi are you referring to the tools that are present in Microsoft Word,etc? If so, I agree that it doesn't offer enough individual creations. There are some limitations in this tool. I personally feel that it will not replace the popular word processing programs unless it includes the tools that allow for individualized creation.

      1) Group participation in assignment #1 In the first assignment, students work in groups to accomplish the task of the informal portrait on location. Students take turns at all three positions within the group; collaboration among the participants utilizing the technology in the required ways is key to success. The finished output (assessment) using technology applications to assemble and organize products is the students objective in a connectivism way. Group critiques is implemented in the final presentation 2) Self- assessment on assignment #2 The second assignment takes the student in areas of technology few have experienced. Selecting and navigating advance options with digital photographic devices is the key component all the while they are working with a model to produce an original work of art. The self-assessment comes in the form of judging themselves and their work against their piers in an online network environment. Viewing and commenting on piers work gives the student information about their interpretation of the assignment and the requirements. Not only does the student judge themselves using technology delivery devices but they also realize portions that could have been considered to make the out come different 3) Group collaboration in assignment #3 Assignment #3 in this unit is designed for the group to collaborate using technology to connect their camera directly to their computer for tether shooting. This concept is difficult in the since that not every camera manufacturer is equal when completing this task. Much cognitive and collaborative energy must be performed to make this happen.       Taking traditional photography to 21 century teaching techniques is a challenge to say the least but the two have great merit. The two have had great changes thrust upon them in recent years due to technology, so it only makes sense that developing curriculums centered on technology would be logical. Having said this the actual design must be well considered. Sometimes I feel jumping to fast just to make it first out of the gate may not be wise. Don't get me wrong, I am gun-ho for implementing curriculum reform especially in the area of photography but I don't what to make changes to values that are just as strong now as they were 20 years ago when I started this business. In my Unit design, I feel strong and necessary changes have been made over the past year. Not just in this class but taking resources from other classes I have experienced through my graduate studies. Sure more improvements are necessary. I remember one statement from a video I saw earlier in the semester mentioned "Leadership involves constantly re-thinking." This is how I see teaching, constantly re-thinking or re-inventing the wheel to bring better meaning and continuity to the subject. My Unit is strong no doubt. Room for improvement, you bet. If I had one area to revisit (and I do), it would be in instructional strategies relating to the third assignment. I would like to have evidence of group research for the themes of the subject. I feel this is where the groups slipped a little. They did not have concrete ideas for subject and composition. Although some groups did, I believe the groups that failed here, learned from their failures and became better for it. Again, I think we as teachers may place too much emphasis on succeeding in the form of getting it right the first time and not enough from learning from failure. I may have the groups submit a proposal outlining their intent for the project before executing it.

      Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions. While the students are all third graders, these students have had a variety of experiences which makes their prior knowledge experiences unique and diverse. Students are working in cooperative groups to generate knowledge together for a common purpose. Sharing their knowledge with one another will result in a more comprehensive and complete prewriting, drafting, and revising experience. The activities incorporate using Google Docs and Webspiration. Capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently known. This unit focuses on students gaining more knowledge about the elements and processes of writing. The focus is not on what they currently know about writing. The web 2.0 tools utilized in this unit are designed to help the students reflect more on the idea generation and revisions to create a clear and original work. Students will use Google Docs, Webspiration, and Glogster to help facilitate the learning process. The knowledge gained can be through collaboration or individual learning tasks. Learning resides in and is accessed in non-human appliances. This will be a new experience for the learners in this unit as most will be 8 and 9 years old. Sharing and creating knowledge in a network learning environment such as Google Docs will lead them to discover a new way to collaborate.       First weakness is perhaps the order of the lessons. After reflecting on the flow of the activities, I think the poster in glogster might be more effective in creating a visual organization of the prewriting instead of summarizing the personal narrative.

      Second weakness is that Google Docs requires users to be 13 and older to have an account. I have made this lesson for 9 and 10 year olds. Using another tool that allows students to collaborate legally at that age would be optimal. Also the availability of computers might be an issue. So creating an option for this lesson to be utlized in a center type situation would offer some flexibility in the lessons.

      Third weakness could be the assessments. With each particular task, the learner is assessed with a rubric or slef-evaluation. A better explanation of how to use the assessments would help those unfamiliar with those particular assessments.

    This was a very nice unit for third graders and writing. The lessons and content support a network learning environment by having the learners use various web 2.0 tools such as google docs and Webspiration to learn and share the knowledge with their peers. The goals and objectives were clear where the students will enhance their writing skills that they already have and build onto them by coming up with new ideas and collaborating with others. Students will also enhance critical thinking skills by using all these tools in writing effectively. I enjoyed the first activity and using brainstorming to come up with ideas and in pre-writing for an essay. In this unit, students are learning and connecting with others to come up with new ideas and also learning from teacher feedback to revise earlier work. Good job Amber!

      Hi, I think that it is important that teachers do pre and post test to know where their students stand in a subject matter.
